I don't see Lily as a smoker, either (that's why she couldn't help coughing -- she's not experienced). I see her as finding a creative way to connect with Sirius and show him she's not his enemy! |

I appreciate your taking the time to let me know you read the story, and thank you for your feedback.
Just for the record, smoking turns me off, too! I have never smoked a single cigarette, and I expect I never will. But this is a work of fiction; I thought it was in character for Sirius, as a rebellious teenager in the 1970s, to smoke. And I thought it would show Lily's determination to connect with him if she participated briefly in something she didn't like and that was, moreover, against the rules. (Actually, lying, spying for Voldemort, and betraying your best friends turns me off rather more than smoking, but I've written a story about Peter doing all that, too... *smile*)
