After re-reading this chapter for review I begin to see the beginnings of a larger back story. The chrysalis charm idea is absolutely wonderful and the way you make it work in the final scenes is literally heart breaking. Harry's memory is sort of metaphorical to what actually happens in the charm, how the heart is so easily torn. Another great chapter for this wonderful fic.

I enjoyed playing with the alchemy symbolism and Dumbledore's quote about Harry's heart being the thing that saved him. I never thought that Harry would have to kill Voldemort and I'm glad of that (for Harry's sake).

Dumbledore having to be small enough for Fawkes to carry? You're forgetting Book 2 'An extaordinary lightness seemed to spread through his whole being and the next second, in a rush of wings they [Harry, Ron, Ginny and Lockhart] were flying upward through the pipe.' (US paperback p. 325).
The Chrysalis charm is brilliant . Interesting part with Harry's mum.

I loved the part where Harry realized that he was a lot like his mother.  That's a part in these stories we rarely get a chance to see.

Red Is The Heart

There is some great Hermione and Ron development in this chapter.  You see Hermione willing to reconsider her opinions during the House Elf project.  You see Ron twice swallowing his pride and showing sympathy towards another something he has rarely done.  First with him suggesting house elves as a project which would meet a need for Hermione and secondly for respecting Nott's authority as a prefect.

The Chrysalis Charm sequecne is very moving as we see Harry for the first time finding a real connection with his mother.  All in all an excellent chapter in an excellent story.

I really wanted to do more with Lily - but JKR has given us so little about her.  I am wondering if  HBP is going to be the mother book, like PoA was the father book.  It will be interesting to see what "Lily's eyes" show about Harry's character.

I'm glad you like Ron in this story.  In my first reading of OotP I was struck by  how loyal and kind he was to Harry even when Harry was being an idiot.  I know he would do the same for Hermione now that he is older and wiser. (He was still concerned about her in PoA - but he had split loyalties with the rat)

Okay... I've been holding back on reviewing this chapter for a lot of reasons, but the biggest is I didn't want to give you a negative review. You've been my favorite author for several weeks and I've really, REALLY enjoyed your work all the way up until I read this:

"Oh, I was still here-you just couldn't see me. My form had dissolved into something small enough for Fawkes to carry. It is somewhat advanced magic, but since you mastered the Patronus Charm in your third year, I have complete faith in your ability to perform and sustain the Chrysalis Charm."

Now I admit that having a new spell or three in a fic can be a wonderful addition, but I need to be convinced.... And sadly, you aren't convincing me.

Maybe it's the concept, or the idea behind it... I'm not sure. What I am sure about is that Dumbledore didn't get smaller when Fawkes "Apparated" him out of Hogwarts. Also it could be that having your "essence" in a shell seems more vulnerable than not. At least Harry can defend himself as his undissolved self!

Alas, I don't think I'll continue reading this, simply because I can't get my head around this one. It's especially sad, because you started out the story with Harry and Ginny snogging away!

Sorry this took me so long to respond to this review, Mr. Intel--I just figured out how to do this!

I can understand your relunctance to accept the Charm--I had another reviewer say that I didn't build up the scene enough. So I have taken that criticism to heart while writing the next scene where the charm is used.

You point out that Harry would be too vulnerable using this charm--but alas--that is where I am taking him. I think that JKR is setting Harry up to encounter
Voldemort on the "battlefield" of the heart--a psychological testing ground as well as a physical one. This is a place where opposites collide--where Harry must confront the bit of Voldemort inside of him. What vehicle JKR will use is anyone's guess--I settled on the chrysalis.
Voldemort's desire for a body and fear of death is interesting in light of "force" behind the locked door in the DoM. I'm hoping that by the end of my little story Harry will have a better understanding of that concept.
It's funny, I could just write an essay about all this--but I'm having a great time learning along with Harry. I hope you'll drop in a few chapters from now and see how he is doing!
BTW--I appreciate all the reviews for this story--negative and positive! I'm learning a lot!

Have I told you lately that I adore this story? No? Well, then, I adore this story. You've nearly had in my tears for most of this chapter. I have a feeling if you keep going as you are, you will finally succeed.

Ron's confrontation with the boys and resulting conversation with Nott has peaked my interest. Has Dumbledore said something? What does Ron know that we don't know? I'm dying to know more about this guy, now.

I can understand Harry's reluctance to dissolve his body -- particularly when he made the reference to it being his connection to his parents. It would be kind of scary not to have that. Then, when he remembered I love it because you gave it to me. I'll keep it forever. and thought of its relevance to his own life, I nearly cried. How perfect and how insightful.

I can't wait to read the next bit of this!

I really like this story. I always hoped there would be more in the "Wallpaper" series. Sorry I'm not the the most faithful at reviewing. I'm so glad that this is going to be a multi-chapter fic. I just can't get enough of that closeness and understanding that was developed between Harry and Ginny. It just seems so natural. Good job getting it to come through your writing that way. I also liked the dragons in this, especially after the picture that Ginny made Harry in "Dragons, Diaries, and Diagon Alley." Can't wait to read more of your writing.

Red Is The Heart
I cheated and read this "elsewhere" yesterday, but I just had to review it here at PhoenixSong as well. I'm enjoying this story too much not to!

The last bit really tugged at my heartstrings:

He had never said those words to anyone, but now in his mind he said them to his mother, who had gifted him with a lopsided heart, easily torn: I love it because you gave it to me. I'll keep it forever.

And Harry's urge to study Flobberworms gave me such a chuckle! What an overachiever, eh?!
