Sirius wanted to scare Snape but Remus would have been the one to pay the ultimate price if he had bitten Snape. He could have even killed him. I am sure that is the problem. I hope their friendship can survive this one. It seems to have done so in other stories. I look forward to how you handle this. It looks like James and Lily are doing ok so far. I love your story, but (being the pedant that I am) I just have to point out a tiny thing. Here in Britain, we make 'bets' and 'bet' each other instead of 'wagers'.
Eg., James would have said "Care to bet on that?"

POV quibble alert. We started out in Lily's POV then sort of drifted into James'. Normally, I don't like POV shifts within a chapter, but it can work if you make it obvious. This wasn't, so I had to go back and re-read several paragraphs to figure out whose head we were in.
