It's a hard day when you're not actually looking forward to sleeping in the same bed as the one you like (LOVE!^_^)
Great start! Haha I already am looking forward to the rest. Thank god I don't have to wait for them.

wow! this is very interesting!!! i must admit though it is kinda wierd to be reading something on this site thats in first person, especially from ginnys POV
hehe loved the ending! I can just see them getting together by the end of the story!

I just started to re-read this old story, one of my favorites so far, and I fell in love with it once again. You're really my idol, lol.
Well, I'm a Spanish speaker, and I'd like to translate Magic Within, Magic Without into Spanish. I enjoy translating and I'd love Spanish readers to be able to read such a great work. What do you think?
Hope you're interested
Thanks for writing! |

I'm glad you liked this the second time! Thanks for reading it again and for letting me know! I'd love for you to translate this - what a nice gesture! Just make sure you let everyone know it was written pre-HBP, so they don't think I was ignoring canon. Thanks. |
eus47 Monday 27th August 2007 16:52 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
This is my favorite St Margaret story. This household of talking mugs, figurines, javelins. It's such an enchanting setting, and the whole story is so elegantly written, and is so sparkling and reffreshing. It's one of the most lovely pieces of fanfiction that I have read untill so far. So thank you very much for it. |
Monday 27th August 2007 18:15 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
Didn't you just make my day? I'm so glad this old story that isn't at all compatible with canon now is still enjoyable. I had such fun thinking about talking figurines and what an old witch's cottage would be like. Thanks for reading! |

'Jets of red and green followed them, but they were out of range before the Death Eaters spotted them.' If the deaters hadn't spotted them, what are the jets of red and green following them? And then 'Ron' is following them? when they hadn't spottend them?
Only one bed . . . poor Ginny , she has to sleep with Harry
Nice action, but a bit overdone (is that what you meant by fluff? because this didn't seem fluffly); I mean I can see the portkey and the goons waiting for her, but if they're waiting to take her blood and take her to Voldemort (alive?), why is the snake there? Maybe that's the fluff, intense action that doesn't completely make sense

Melian Thursday 17th November 2005 12:47 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
I just love everything that you've ever written eventhough I am not usually a fan of "Ginny can speak parseltongue" stories, yours are in a class by themselves and so well done. I hope you keep writing! Would love to see a sequel to this story as well as "Red is the Heart". |
Thursday 17th November 2005 14:50 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
Thanks for the review! JKR shot down the Ginny speaking Parseltongue thing in her interview this summer. Oh, well. I have another minor character fluff and then I'll be working on a Ginny alternate point of view for HBP. It might be awhile. I actually have a married H/G story I need to dust off . . . So many plot bunnies - so little time! Thanks again - I'm glad this story is still being read. That makes my day! |
Black Vengeance Tuesday 2nd August 2005 06:44 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
Wow, this is really good! I have a feeling I've read this before, but I don't think I read the rest of the fic so I'll carry on reading. The only bad thing I could say about this is that Ginny switches from saying Voldemort to You Know Who here. She says Voldemort in book 6 but I'm not sure about before then.
Anyway, your writing style is really good and I think this is better even than the Wallpaper World fics and Red Is The Heart, which I read on SIYE. Great fic so far! |
Tuesday 2nd August 2005 11:39 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
Hello again! Yes - you are a sharp-eyed reader. Ginny does use Voldemort in HBP - but she didn't until then - I checked - believe me. So in that last conversation (Harry you idiot - you do not walk away from Ginny Weasley) at the funeral when Ginny says it - I noticed that right off. Thanks for reading. |

Good start, I see this is not going to be a fluff fest. I enjoy the way you bring out the mood. |
Eressea Friday 10th December 2004 15:11 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
I like the plot. It's rather different than usual. Harry isn't beside himself with grief, and they get abducted in the beginning of the fic. The talk they have about evil seems to progress too fast to me. Nice shower. |
Black Vengeance Tuesday 30th November 2004 13:27 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
Very long chapter, but very good! I love H/G fics.
How come the Weasleys have such a wealthy relative when they're so poor? Surely she would help them out?
I loved the Sunflower shower!! Nice chappie. |
Delani Thursday 11th November 2004 23:34 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
How charming! I really did enjoy this story! These quotes made me giggle:
Laughing he picked it up and flourished it in front of him. "Take that, chocolate icing!"
"Ginny, you have to get your hair out of my face, I can't see anything," Harry said impatiently."
and on to the next part; a sequel, perhaps? (Please?) Again, this really was enjoyable; I love the adventure interwoven with drama and fluff.

Oohhh, cool! Ubercool, actually! There definitely has to be
something special about the first Weasley girl in generations.. I
really look forward to seeing where you're going to take this.
And I love them having to share a bed - they do need each other's
warmth. Such an adventurous day, I can hardly wait for the
explanations they're bound to find.

Penny Lane Tuesday 9th November 2004 13:56 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
She put both hands on the handle in front of her, making up her mind that she would not scream, hang on to Harry, or generally act like a girl from now on.
As someone who grew up constantly trying to suppress my inner girly-girl (the only way to survive childhood with four older brothers), I can't tell you how amusing that line was to me. I don't think I've ever related to Ginny more.
The sunflower shower nozzle was a beautiful touch, and as everyone else has said, your action scenes were great. They were so good, in fact, that I didn't even miss the fluff!
|
Tuesday 9th November 2004 17:22 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
Oh I'm glad to know that about the girly-girl "issue" because that is one of the things I have Ginny exploring in later chapters. After the revelation that her brothers wouldn't let her play Quidditch , I wanted to deal with that part of Ginny.
I tend to miss the fluff in adventure tales - so I'll try to have a balance! |

Hey! I still have to catch up on 'Red is the Heart', but I had a minute and I jumped on this instead. Excellent premise, and wonderful writing, as always...you do action very well! - and they all think you're a fluff writer, teehee. |

As always, you just pull me in to your stories. A nice mix of unexpected action--which doesn't feel improbable--and conversation between Harry and Ginny. And you must have been laughing evilly as you planned the end of this chapter! |

Hey, I reviewed over on SIYE, but just in response to John's
(Kokopelli's) review, and your response to his review.... I thought I'd
help you out.
Go read "Sketches from Kokopelli's notebook" archived here under
Kokopelli's stories, and you'll find out all about "The Chaste
Nap".
But, here we are jumping all over you, and nothing has happened yet!
Ginny has NOT gotten into the bed yet, and we don't know why Harry
didn't stay awake. (I like your response in that other review: he fell
asleep doing occlumency exercises) So, we'll just wait and
see. You'll just have to write faster and post the next bit
soon!!!

Monday 8th November 2004 13:14 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
amulder, you're so nice! John actually e-mailed me to clarify and I was able to set his mind at ease without giving away too much of the story! Hopefully he will be able to tolerate my version of the "chaste nap" when the time comes. (Did I mention the bed test takes place over three nights? - evil cackle) So you all will have two more nocturnal "tests" to worry about! |
Kokopelli Monday 8th November 2004 10:22 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
One bed? Puh-leeze!
I'm death on the chaste nap - Ginny would stuff splinters up her
fingernails before she'd allow this, likewise Harry - he'd sleep on the
floor with hot and cold running cockroaches before he'd share a bed
with Ron's sister - just the teasing from the Twins alone would rule
this one out.
JEC
(I am glad to see this story, and look forward to seeing where it's
going, but those who know me know about my rants against the chaste
nap.)
|
Monday 8th November 2004 10:54 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
Ha! I've never heard of the chaste nap - perhaps that is a fan fiction cliche I haven't run across. My inspiration for this little divergence comes from the romances and epics of the middle ages. In many of the medieval epics there is a "bed" test - usually over the course of three nights - to determine the knight and lady's virtue. We'll see how H/G do with it. Hopefully they will pass and still be in character. |
Bart Monday 8th November 2004 06:22 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
Wow, what a great first chapter
It was ggod to see to fleshing out the Weasley back story somewhat, I
take it that not all the Weasleys are poor, Aunt Martha sounds nit to
be short of a Sickle or two.
I'm interested to know Harrys reaction when he wakes up, I'm surprised
he was able to fall asleap, being the first to discover there was only
one bed and what that would mean, not that he would dislike the idea at
all
|

Well you know, you're doing your Occulemency exercises and boom - sound asleep! Plus Ginny took a long time in the bathroom!
|
Bring and Fly Monday 8th November 2004 06:13 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
This is amazing! I couldn't believe that Ginny would open the letter! I kept saying "no, Gin, don't do it." But, of course, she did. At least she had Harry with her, and a Harry who kept his head.
Their conversation at Aunt Martha's had the gritty feel of on-the-edge realism that occurs after one of those soul-jarring moments in life.
I like the shower... so cute and yet I could imagine it being that way. And the last scene... can't wait for the next chapter, if only to see H&G's reactions! |
Monday 8th November 2004 06:41 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
I was worried about that conversation - how they just blurted everything out. Almost a oneupmanship - I'm glad it rang true because I wanted to have that angsty stuff out in the open quickly.
It's fun to write from Ginny's PoV because she would notice different things than Harry - like the sleepy sunflower and all the nice shampoos. |
XiaoXiao Monday 8th November 2004 02:53 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
Oh, no! One bed! Whatever will she do?
V. v. interesting. I can't wait to find out more. Loved the dancing girl candle! Oh, and I also think that Ginny's a Parselmouth. |

Ahh! I love this fic, it's so cute and funny, yet dark and mysterious at the same time! How is that possible? It's great, I can't wait to see where this goes! |
Mr. Intel Sunday 7th November 2004 20:57 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
Very entertaining and packed with all sorts of goodness. I liked
how you setup Harry and Ginny's situation, not as contrived as it could
have been, but too quick to be totally believable. The cake knife
was a great tool to use and connotates all sorts of fun things.
You have woven Harry and Ginny together tightly, even though they
remain 'apart' emotionally. (The Portkey/Seeker grab, the broom
ride, Parseltongue, the eveil dialoge, the toothbrushes and finally,
the bed).
All in all, a whiz-bang start to a potentially great story. Just...no Chrysalis charms, okay? :P

Holy crap, I think there's a law that says you can't end stories like that. I don't know if I want to kiss you or throttle you!
Wonderful story. I was expecting a piece of H/G fluff and instead got some lovely insight into Ginny's character - and Harry's. It's the details, I think, that make Rowling stand out as a writer, and you've captured so many of them in this story.
First off: the stripping candles - too funny! And so very in character for the twins. Plus, I always love authors who mention Ron's ears turning red:).
Then as if with one mind, the two Seekers for Gryffindor reached out to grab it, as if it were a Snitch.
I am of the opinion that the fact that Ginny was able to take over for Harry as Seeker will be important to the story - so I love that you included that they were both Seekers - and it's a very believable scenario for them to both grab the Portkey (and Thank Heavens Harry did so).
Ginny's quick defense of Percy was great.
I think, being the H/G gal I am, that Ginny may prove a seductive hostage to the Death Eaters and Voldemort - and Harry's explanation about her over coming Tom's evil is a perfect example why. And I've always wondered whether Ginny could speak Parsletounge or not - I'm glad you addressed it.
A couple of lines I loved:
Harry noticed and pulled her close to stay warm. At any other time she would have been embarrassed or thrilled or terribly aware of him. Now she was glad that he was warm and didn't talk.
And
A long time ago, like yesterday, she thought ruefully, sharing a room with Harry would have thrown her into a sea of doubt and defensiveness.
Both seem to sum up something deep inside the Harry/Ginny dynamic - the attraction will always be there, but both are so ingrained in the outcome of the war, that the attraction will have to wait - it won't hurt, however, to think on it every now and then.
Lovely story!

Monday 8th November 2004 06:34 | Magic Within, Magic Without (Author Response) |
Thank you for your lovely long review! I'm going to do a lot of delving into Ginny's character - which is where the title comes from.
I don't think I'll wait until the end of the war for a little fluff between them - since I'm an impatient sort. But H/G will have to learn a few things about each other before such a thing happens. |
jadzialove Sunday 7th November 2004 20:22 | Magic Within, Magic Without |
I was so thrilled to see your name on the list of new fics. I love your work and was not at all disappointed by this new story. You've already got me hooked and I look forward to your updates. I can only hope you update often! |
