Very well done. Clasic case of the bully getting punched in the nose and not knowing what to do once someone finally stands up to him/her. I find it to be even more realistic than JKR's take. It always bothered me that in the battle at the ministry at the end of book 5, the DEs were so easily beating the order members. Remus and Sirus, I could see. The were civilians really, but Tonks, Moody and Shacklebolt? They were Aurors; the wizarding version of the SAS or the US Navy Seals as I understand her writing to describe them. DEs, who are really nothing more than terrorists, should not stand a chance against them. Not really anyways. JKR needed to out number the order more to make that battle more true to life. I really like this story and where it is going. Harry apparating himself like that was great. That would be the behavior I'd expect. Hopefully he gets smarter and starts to fight with both his mind and his heart. Can't wait to read more. |

That was fantastic! How refreshing to see a world where muggles can be a match for wizards. I wish I'd seen Hermione's face when her Mum managed to see off two Death Eaters right in front of her. I also liked the Grangers' back story, and Harry's apparition trick! Thanks, Helen |

I started reading your Granger defense months ago when I first
discovered fanfiction. This was a wonderful story and I'm pretty
excited to see that your continuing it. I love this chapter and love
your Ted and Madge I mean Steph and Sylvia. It will be fun following the character/stories you've brought to life...

I was thrilled, amazed and on the edge of my seat during the fighting scenes. What a way to show how us Muggles can really fight with proper training and something those stupid Death Eaters don't know anything about.

Excellent story; if I have any complaint, it's that it's too short! This would make a great jumping off point for a much longer work, perhaps one where the skills of the parents of other Muggleborn students are brought into play against Voldemort's forces. I hope you have more stories planned in this version of the Potterverse, I think it's definitely a worthwhile addition to the vast collection of fan fiction that is scattered across the net. Well done, and thanks for sharing it with us.

My old pal, Fenriswolf- Thank you for your review from so very long ago on PhoenixSong. I am now continuing this Harry/Ginny tale here, as well as my 'other' activities.
"The Granger Defense" has been renamed "Great Scott, Potter, This is War!" and is now being continued through Harry's sixth year on this site. The next chapter after the Grangers defeated the Death Eaters has now been posted.
(Ch.4 - is slightly different here than at PK. The primary differences are: the 'kiss' at Grimmauld place, Ginny's reaction, and Harry's train of thought at the end.)
If you want to follow this tale here also, I would love to hear your thoughts, but I understand if you don't.

Hmm. The Mac-10 I don't buy. A double-barrel shotgun was actually what I was expecting (buckshot is a wonderful home defense round), and easier to obtain given the British obsession with birding.

Cool!! I really like the concept of DE meeting thier match with a pair of muggles. And it was really well written... A definite plus... Especially since having a good idea so rarly translates to being a a good writer. I also really liked the backstory about Herm's parents, though the scene with the inspector was a little confusing... Keep up the good work...

This was quite the story. I enjoyed it. You had a simple
basic concept, and drew a decent picture of it while avoiding trying to
spin it into twelve chapters.
The retrospective scenes were an important device for building my
belief in the story, both the retrospective scenes of Steph Granger's
SAS training and those of his courtship, including his using those
skills in a civilian context.
I'm not quite clear on the significance of the "old trunk" which was
the last item that the Grangers were moving from "his old flat" and
which is presumably the same as Hermione's father's "dusty old chest"
that he takes with him to Grimmauld Place. Is it significant that
the trunk was the last item left to be moved in the old flat? Am
I seeing connections where none exist?

doesn't know the Sergeant Major---what he said was that he met Inspector Fairbarin (who invented the knife Steph Granger carried)---Fairbarin is a legend in knife fighting circles---See volume 1 of WEB Griffith's Marine Corps series to see what another character does with a baby Fairbarin against a bunch of Italian marines in Shanghai...
Oh thank you for having show up. I have to admit, though, I'm a bit surprised Alastor knows the old Sergeant-Major/Inspector. I'll betcha THAT would be a story worth reading (who said Dumbledore and his Animagi had the lock on 40s-era fun?).

Very nicely done. I thought Steph's breaking the wand of the DE he'd killed -- just to make sure -- was very much in character. These chapters hang together very well, and I think you've put your finger on one of the logical weaknesses of JKR's vision. Her separation between magical and mundane is a bit too complete. We're so often caught up in how wonderful her magical world is that we forget to wonder why there's less cooperation between the Ministry and the Muggle Government.
Anyway, I really enjoyed your tale, and the chance to see a side of Hermione's parents that we'd never suspect was there. Poor Ron. As if Hermione wasn't formidible enough. |

Okay, this kids are finally asleep so I can leave a longer review.
Great progression with the chapter headings.
the Muggle explosive device went off five minutes after it should have -DEs use bombs? How Muggle! No wonder they mucked up the timer.
Clayton assumed the formal stance.....irecting the precise assault spells he used so fondly. When he looked back up, he noticed his target was closer than he expected him to be. -Practice hero.
He dropped the body and reach down for the wand, snapping it in his hands. No wand, no wand spells. -Thorough and well in character
and every one in the SAS knew about Steph Granger. -sounds like a good fic in itself. Any chance?
includin' me in '42." -Nice tie-in from the first chapter.
but she had been trained in defense by Harry Potter -nothing more flattering than the respect of a hated enemy
an idea from the one year of Muggle Studies the lad had told no one of - had brought the young witch into easy range. -Hah! That was great.
Sylvia took Pew's wand, broke it, and stabbed him with the sharpest end. -but that was better.
Sylvia had a bit of toothpaste on one side of her mouth, but the bloodstains distracted the viewer from that fact -There are some wonderful scenes here. Wish I could draw.
Get this bus headed to you-know-where, Ernie. -Ernie's in the Order? Makes sense I suppose.
That was a hoot to read! |

Dumb question, during what historical operation did Pvt. Granger save

Finally, I don't know if you're a Ron/Hermione person, but I now shudder to think how the Ron/Mr. Granger "talk" would go!

Hi,
Cheers on adding some colour to why Hermione is a Gryffindor rather than a Ravenclaw. I also love the whole tone to Harry's scenes. Harry's desperation and hell-or-high-water sense of dedication to helping and protecting his friends shone through.
I hope you write more in this series. I was so anxiously awaiting the climax of your tail that I popped back to the site more times this week than any other time.
Keep on typing!
