Bewitched and Bewildered
Poor Ginny. She went to the trouble to tell Harry that she was interested in Dean only to have him dump her feelings and not even do it himself. Harry is trying to let her know how he feels but it is just not a good time for her to hear that. Of course she has no idea what is going on in Harry's mind. I look forward to more of this story. I hope Ginny is willing to listen soon. Thanks for writing. p

Interesting, Dean's not interested, and Ron's upset . Sort of a damned if I do, damned if I don't matter .
And Ron hinting at Harry .
Not making it easy for Harry, are we?

Aww! Ginny...and Harry...and *angry voice* Dean! Ginny's sad--though she still likes Harry--and Harry's an idiot, and Ron and Hermione are just cute, and I'm going to stop babbling now and read the next chapter.

Harry seemed a bit dim when it came to girls in OotP - I was happy to see him get it a bit more together in HBP, but I wasn't expecting it. Babbling is good - it means you like!

Ok, Dean's out of the way, but that wasn't too nice of Ginny.

It wasn't.  But the head space I figure she's in at that moment goes something like, "Oh it's Harry - the other guy who didn't want me and I totally embarrassed myself in front of all the time."  But she gets that it was rude and Harry had nothing to do with it - which is why she says she's sorry.

Ginny sure comes through as a very childish person, and Ron too.Good heavens, she "Set her cap" for Dean,he did nothing to encourage her,and she is devastated, and Ron upset, when he made it clear he was not interested in a relationship. They call it "dumping" when there was nothing there to start with, just Ginny trying to get Harry a bit jealous??thiswhole thing was weird,to say the least.

Okay - whoa.  Let's get through this.

Ginny is childish why?  She did not take any sort of revenge, nor even say anything particularly nasty about Dean.  She just cried.  And ate some pudding.  Because it hurts to be rejected.  She was angry because Dean sent Ron to be the messenger - which was a cowardly move - and having your older brother tell you some guy doesn't want you is humiliating.  And possibly requires even larger amounts of pudding.

Ron was only upset when he asked if Ginny wasn't good enough for Dean. Which was purely a joke.  The idea is Ron would be angry (witness HBP) at a guy for wanting his sister, but also angry when someone suggests they wouldn't want her.  A bit of fun with Ron there, but I think it's a usual gut reaction, kinda like how nobody had ever say anything bad about your mother.

Dumping - Ron asks about dumping under the impression something has already happened.  And it hasn't - which Dean immediately clears up.  Later he says "dump for real" which again was meant to define the difference.  Ron is saying it was hard enough just to tell her no, imagine how awful it would be if you actually had to dump someone.  He knows it wasn't an actual dumping - just a rejection - and the idea is all forms of having to reject someone are awful.

Dean's encouragement - well we didn't see any scenes between them so it's hard to say.  But I imagine that he did.  Because he liked her the year before - and would still if he hadn't moved on to someone else.   It was innocent encouragement - but enough to give her the impression interest was there.

But most importantly - this had absolutely nothing to do with Harry.  It was not an agenda in any way.  Ginny liked Dean for Dean.  And is hurt because he didn't want her back.  In this story she really has given up on Harry.  And I want to be clear on that - because it could colour your impression of Ginny for the whole story.  Ginny, at the very least, is honest throughout.

Storytime!  When I was 27 I met a guy, very cute, who flirted with me ruthlessly for three weeks.  There was touching, innuendo all over the place etc. etc.  And I was soooooo excited, because I thought he was wonderful and wanted him BAD.  So I finally plucked up the courage to ask him out.  Before I had always waited for the guy to ask me, a good working system, but this time I couldn't wait - I was a puddle of goo and wanted to get on to the fun stuff.  And.  He. Said.  NO!  I laughed it off and said well thank goodness we got that cleared up.  Then I plastered a smile to my face and got through the rest of the day.  But when I got home I hid under a comforter, played soothing music and cried myself silly for about an hour.  Then my roommate came home and rescued me with icecream cake.  The next day I bought a new outfit and got my hair done.

I'm just saying, I don't know about you, but from my own worldview - crying over rejection is honest, not childish.  I don't even want to get into what a mess I become when an actual relationship comes to an end.

This is long.  Sorry.  I always feel the need to rush to the defense of my characters.  That's probably a weakness in me, but one I always give into.  When I worry someone is missing my intention, and thinking ill of them, I feel the need to explain myself on their behalf.

Thanks for another great chapter. I'm really enjoying this story and can't wait to read the rest of it. I'm glad that we didn't have to see too much Ginny and Dean though, Dean really is an idiot.

No - much less of  Dean than in the real thing.  Though this doesn't mean it's easy sailing from here.    As you will see when Chapter Five is up today!  Thank you again!

Hmmm... interesting.  G/D never was an item, after all, and I share Harry's joy in that revelation.  But why did Harry call her Virginia?  It's been quite a while that we've known her name is really Ginevra, so why Virginia?

Anyway, I look forward to see what happens next.  Thanks for sharing!

We've known her name for about a year only because Rowling put the information on her web site.  Ginny has never been called by her full name in canon - so I presume that Harry has never heard it and therefore isn't privy to the information.  I was making a bit of an in joke about the fandom.  I thought it was funny that we had her name wrong for a long time before Rowling corrected us - and it turned out Ginny's true name is far more unique, and in my opinion, beautiful.  So I am having Harry make the same assumption that we did.  But don't worry - he is mistaken.  And he will be corrected.  But not until the last chapter.  And the moment when he finds out is the first I wrote for the entire story - and I'm a little attached to it - so even despite all the confusion I am causing, I am sticking to it.    Meanwhile, as for why Ginny isn't correcting him - I'll let her tell you when we get there.

My beta, Rin, has chapter five, so it shouldn't be too long.  Thank you for the review!

Thank you very much. And don't worry - I know her name is Ginevra.  Harry doesn't.  And he will be straightened out - eventually.

Oh! That's so sad! Poor Ginny! But good, too.... Now I know how Harry feels... But I can't help but be happy that it happened.  n.n  I hope he ends up comforting her somehow, because I think it would really help their relationship. They don't seem to talk anymore, like as friends. :-( Aw well. I know they'll get together in the end. *content smile*

...

*frantic worry* They will, right?

Sunday 4th December 2005 12:06Bewitched and Bewildered (Author Response)

Thank you!  Well, let's just say he'll try to comfort her, but I make no promises about how that's going to work out for him.    Bwa ha ha ha ha!  Heh.  Sorry, couldn't resist being evil for a second there.  They still talk - I think it's just that now Harry has realized he likes her, his moments with her feel much more loaded.  But don't worry - their conversational skills will come back in full force for the last few chapters.  It's funny you mention that though - cause it is a point I work at.  In the sequel I am working pretty hard at making sure it's not just all romance - but that they have an actual conversation in every chapter.

And no worries at all. I solemnly swear I am up to absolute good.  I will never write a story where they aren't together in the end.  That would just depress me too much.
