Since Dumbledore mentions that one Horcrux is something of Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, it makes sense that Voldie wanted one of each but didn't get to follow through with one (as Dumbledore says happened the night Harry's parents died -- Dumbledore had intended to make one but was thwarted by the rebounded curse). So it makes sense to find an item of either of those at Godric Hollow, and now the three need to go look for something of Gryffindor which is a real Horcrux. Good close reading of canon.
