Woah, that was really good! Really enjoyed it, I liked how you linked everything, like with the Love Potions, that was a nice little inter-story!
Hermione and Ginny seem to get better and better friends throughout the books but I guess I'd never really thought about how their friendship began!
I like how Hermione could relate even relationships to something she'd read.
It's funny that she thought she'd be going out with Ron by fourth year, when really it took 4 years and Ron didn't even take the initiative in the end! What I'd really like to read now is something about The Yule Ball, how Ron didn't ask Hermione and their big argument... could you consider a little story about that?
This was very very good. I liked Ginny's insecurities, it really fit with the way she's portrayed as a 12 year old in the books.

Wow - I just found this and read the whole thing on my lunch break - really entertaining. I've always wanted to know more about Ginny and Hermione's friendship, since it mostly seemed to happen "offstage" as it were.

Dear Majolie,

Thanks for taking the time to review. I'm really flattered that this old story is still being read, and I'm so pleased that it filled a gap for you!

I like your take on how Hermione and Ginny became friends. The confusion over Harry or Ron was cute. I LOVE the story about Molly and Arthur. Good work!

Dear Astrid,

Thanks for reviewing. I've always wondered about that love potion ... obviously Molly wasn't as law-abiding as she'd like us to think! Lucky that Ginny and Hermione won't need to resort to potions, isn't it?

Best wishes,

From the dregs of the chaos, the nonsensical thought that leapt into my brain and out of my mouth was:
"You mean … you fancy … RON?"

Gosh, that is priceless! I love this whole story. The transition from anxiety to giggling excitement is so smoothly, realistically and beautifully done. I love how they talked all night. Thanks for a gorgeous story, a great missing and very canon-like series of scenes.

Dear Ladybug,

"You mean … you fancy … RON?"

Gosh, that is priceless!

Wonderful! That's my favourite line too! The whole story was leading up to that moment. I wanted Ginny to feel friendly to Hermione while she was still jealous of her, but I definitely wanted her to understand before morning that Hermione was not her rival.

As for "very canon-like" ... well, I think it's pretty clear in canon that Hermione and Ginny become friends long before the boys notice or care, so it was an obvious story to write. Isn't JKR marvellous in the way she inspires us all to explore the behind-the-scenes of her stories?

I read your whole story this morning and really enjoyed it. The characterizations were spot-on—Ginny trying to pull herself back together after her disasterous first year and Hermione thoughlessly babbling about what she’s interested in without noticing Ginny’s distress. (Honestly Hermione, carrying on about the mental state of everyone who was petrified, how insensitive! But I can see her doing it at that age—remember Lavender’s bunny?).

Hermione needed a girl friend to balance her relationship with the boys and I imagine your scenario describes how it “really" started. Ginny and Hermione are so good for each other and it’s nice to read a well-written story about their friendship.

I look forward to reading more from you. Also, love your penname!

Dear Anniep,

That's so flattering - you read the whole story at a sitting. Thanks for taking the trouble to review.

Ginny is more resilient than most of us. I'm sure she had a hard time, but I'm sure she did pull herself together successfully. And making friends would have helped - we know that she eventually became popular among her peers.

Tact has never been Hermione's strong point. She is so good at understanding the theory of human nature, and so bad at applying that knowledge to practical situations! Yes, I did have Lavender's bunny in mind when I wrote this story. Certain situations wtih house-elves and centaurs also spring to mind, to say nothing of the way Hermione regularly handles both Harry and Ron. Isn't it a sign of JKR's genius that we all love Hermione despite all this?

Also, love your penname!

There's nothing like declaring one's prejudices in the opening line, is there?

I do have a few more stories in the pipeline, but I don't know how many of them will be suitable for PhoenixSong, so it will be up to the Admins to make a decision.

Ginny seemed a little neurotic at the start of the story - I was pleased to see her coming through in the end. Your portrayal of Hermione was spot on. Just one query though - if as Molly says "all love potions are illegal" then how do the twins manage to produce and sell them in their store in HBP?
Wednesday 17th May 2006 15:27All Night Long (Author Response)
Dear Juliet,

Thanks for taking the trouble to review. I see this period (early in Ginny's second year) as a time of change for her, and I find it difficult to write change in personality, so this project was a challenge for me. But Hermione is so embarrassingly like me that I'm afraid she was easy!

Just one query though - if as Molly says "all love potions are illegal" then how do the twins manage to produce and sell them in their store in HBP?

I've wondered that myself. But it's clear in GoF that love potions are illegal, and so they ought to be - they are really a form of Imperius curse. Either JKR forgot, or the twins have some special marketing plan that makes their form of aphrodisiac fall through a loophole in the law. Wouldn't you rather believe the latter than the former?

Thanks for your input,

"Harry hasn't noticed me."

"You'll have to be patient with Harry," she agreed, "because he's still growing."

That one cracked me up.

Dear Critmo,

I am so sorry to hear that you are cracked. I hope you know a good Reparo spell.

Never mind. Harry grew up. And we all know whom he noticed.

That is so cute! I've been following this story RABIDLY and I'm really quite disappointed to read the last of it. I was hoping there'd be more! But this was very cute. It showed much of Ginny's shyness and lonliness and insecureness. I love how she took it upon herself to make friends with Hermione, and to get to know her other classmates as well. And it was really amusing to see Hermione unintentionally mislead Ginny into thinking that she was in love with Harry. And I also remember reading that G, Hr, and Mrs. Weasley were giggling over love potions in the PoA. This is quite a sufficient explanation. I really love your work and hope to see more from you soon! Well done!

Dear Connor,

I am so flattered to hear I have a RABID reader. That's how I read JKR's canon! I don't have any more writing on the Ginny/Hermione relationship, but I do have a few other plot bunnies percolating in my brain.

What an absolutely lovely story. I love Hermione's big sister oh so wise attitude with Ginny. You haven't written her to seem like a know-it-all in a pompous way, just a very informative way. What girl her age would know all those facts about boys and think that her friend knew perfectly well what she was talking about. Excellent! I also love how you have written this early Ginny. She is all attitude and wit in her head, yet shy and reserved on the outside. Nice touch!

Dear thisgrlrox,

Thank you for reviewing my story. I thought your "big sister" remark was perceptive - now I think about it, Hermione is rather like a bossy older sister to Ginny. Yes, I do see her as a person who would have read all the biology books and know the theory of puberty, without stopping to think how it would apply in the lives of real people.

As for Ginny ... we know she is resilient, headstrong, humorous and talkative, and that she is already well on the road to recovery from her Diary experience, but I'm sure there were a few shadows left at this early stage. She was shy of Harry, and perhaps of some other people too. Making friends at school - as we know she eventually did - would have made all the difference.

Wonderful story! I loved the imagery of the newspaper showing Arthur's reaction as he evesdropped on the girls' conversation. I love that Hermione's first words upon waking were '"new subjects this term!"' very Hermione.

Your story has a good flow to it, everyone is natural and in character. Nobaody's vocabulary has changed. You did a good jub showing that Ginny had turned a corner regarding Harry, friends, and school in general without stating it obviously, i.e. "Ginny suddenly realized..." I thought Hermione was a bit hard on Harry, but maybe that's a mark of how much she trusts Ginny?

A really lovely story!

Dear Mullvaney,

Thanks for such a detailed and thoughtful review. I loved writing this story, so I'm glad you enjoyed reading.

Yes, Hermione was a little hard on Harry. I do see her as someone who is thoughtlessly judgmental without actually meaning any harm (i.e. someone like me!); but she also wanted to make it very clear to Ginny that she wasn't romantically interested in Harry, so I think she did exaggerate a little. I think she really wanted Ginny as a friend, and was ready to open up to another girl.

Thank you for so much positive input,

Aww. Love the depiction of the turning point of Ginny and Hermione's friendship.
Wednesday 17th May 2006 01:22All Night Long (Author Response)
Dear TigerLily,

Thank you! I definitely believe they are friends - I've thought so ever since GoF, when Hermione told Ginny who was taking her to the Yule Ball. I'm glad you agree that I picked a plausible moment for the friendship to begin.

Was that definitely the end? I could go on reading this for ages.

whom I meant Really, the only 13-year-old who would say that is Hermione. You've got her spot on.
The rustling newspaper, too, was very good...

Loved the way you took those two or three sentences out of the book and told us the story behind them.
Wednesday 17th May 2006 01:21All Night Long (Author Response)
Dear Evelyn,

Yes, definitely the end. The story has reached a resolution, so ... that's that.

Hermione was easy to write. She is painfully like me. But Arthur was a little harder to hit off, which might be why I hid him behind a newspaper. And "taking two or three sentences out of the book" ... isn't that the point of fanfiction?

Thanks for reviewing. I might be back with a different story later.

Dear cckeimig,

Thanks for your reviews; I really enjoyed reading them! The friendship between Ginny and Hermione really hit me between the eyes when I read GoF, so I thought we needed some explanation for it.
