Would you stop aking me laugh so much reading your disclaimers, it's getting so I'm actually looking forward to reading them!!!

A very intense chapter dealing with many topics, all well thought out and exectuted well. I fnd your writing very mature and grown up, not condesending but someone who genuinely wants the reader to find enjoyment from reading the story for that you've done well.

While I'm certain that her table manners are better than Ron's, it does appear that
Hermione has been picking up certain mannerisms from her husband. :-}

Harry's (lack of) perceptivity with respect to flirting strikes me as about right -- I'd
probably have reacted about the same way.

Heh -- the small cab of the Bryson's truck sure seems familiar: our pickup has a single "bench" seat, too. Hauls cargo just fine; it's just not designed to carry many people.

Ja; Hermione's logic with respect to selecting the memories makes a great deal of sense.

I just don't think Harry's mind has ever been in the appopriate place to learn about flirting. He's just never spent enough time without bigger things to worry about.

Yes small pickup cabs can be interesting places. We had several simliar ones at our farm. Four people was a bit of sqUEEze.

Thanks for the R&R!

"I'm sure she did like you, Harry, but you were sixteen, and she was almost forty," Hermione consoled. "Although, you didn't hear that from me," she added quickly.

"No, that can't be!"

"She started Hogwarts the year Mum left, so she's only six years younger than Mum."

This is either an error, or Hermione started calling Mrs. Weasley Mum and you forgot to give us some precedence so that it doesn't seem out of place.

'but we still couldn't get the list of charges.' -- I thought the police could get access tocredit card accounts in investigations; if the wizarding world thought Harry dead, wouldn't the Ministry put some kind of trace on Harry's card to prosecute the theft and fraud they would think was taking place if the card was being used with Harry dead?
'She would later recall that this was the one and only time while she knew him he looked dangerous' - now how would we (or rather Hermione and Harry) know this from Harry's memory?
Interesting and funny bit with Angus and Co., but wouldn't that require the Imperius charm? Would Harry, with his 'nobility', use an Unforgiveable?
At first, based on the last chapter, I thought Clara was the homely wife; a bit sneaky having the 'character' in reverse order .

Well from a muggle perspective (It's a muggle bank after all.) They would have no clue that Harr was dead. They (the people looking for Harry) however are not muggle police, and the terms by which your can get access to the charges on someone's account depends entirely how fiercley your bank protects your privacy. I have no clue what the laws regarding this are in the UK, but in the US a bank would not be required to give any information to even the police, unless a court order had been issued.

The Wizarding world works differently. The goblins (IMHO) have their own means for determining who's alive and who's not having mostly to do with the automatic execution of some clauses within magic contracts. It doesn't mean they'd let just anyone know if those clauses had been executed though. Certainly when Sirius was running from the law the Ministry would have liked to seize his assets but they failed to do so, because the goblins are not under Ministry control. So I find it unlikely that Ministry (Auror or otherwise) has any control over Harry's financial dealings even if he is presumed to be a criminal much less dead.

The issue with Kyla's recognition is that it's happening in the narrators voice. When I wrote this section of the book, I was not entirely sure how I was going to deal with the narrator. As it turns out, I stuffed him in sack and threw him off a very tall bridge, but not before he managed to slip that line into the story. Sneaky little narrator.

Now for the more intense explanation. The noble Harry that we all know and love from canon has changed. It's very much the premise of this book. The three stages of Harry: the man he was, the man he is, and the man he wants to be. He is only the second one, the first and the last very much the same person, unfortunately the burden that was placed on Harry was too great for him to complete his destiny without paying some price. That is the Toll of Destiny. That one should fulfill their purpose at the age of nineteen and find that they are no longer the person who set out on the journey. Harry defeated Voldemort, but it cost him everything including his nobility and his self respect. He longer likes the person he is, but you cannot untake a life. This new Harry's moral compass is not inline with either the man he was, or the man he wants to be, in periods of anger or desperation he is prone to doing things that he would prefer that he not be capable of, but he does them anyway. We will delve into this a great deal later in the book where Harry finds himself fighting a war in which he is the ultimate authority for his side of the war. The Ministry being marginalized to the point that death eaters can longer be incarcerated, because a corrupt government would only free those you turn in. You can't hold them prisoner yourself, and you can't keep fighting the same people over and over again. Over time Harry loses much of his respect for the preciousness of life to the point that he sees to objection for attempting to alter the lives of three individuals he barely knows. It's not like he hasn't done it before, and this particular Harry has issues perceiving the difference between a threat in war, and a threat on the street.

Now the decision to use the spells the way I did were, that I feel you should approach this more along the lines of hypnotic suggestion. Harry is not commanding them as a puppet, he is, attempting to alter their perception of their lives. Is this better than the imperious curse? In some ways yes in some ways no. I don't see the affect as being as permanent as Harry or Hermione may indicate within the story. The affect will wear off slowly over time, but the influence that Harry has had over them will continue to have altered their reality, and most likely the people they become. It's not exactly a moment that Harry is proud of, but the bigger issue in the grand scheme of things is that Harry felt he had the right to do this. That's the problem, the person that Harry was, and the person that Harry wants to be would not feel they have the right to perform such magic.

Hermione will attempt to help Harry rebalance his moral compass as part of the treatment, but it is a rather large issue in the grand scheme of things, and something this character continues to deal with for the rest of his life. I've outlined a continuation of this story beyond this book, and that particular story deals with Harry trying to reconcile the fact that power can corrupt anyone, and the temptation to use his power to strike back at those who have wronged him becomes to great a seduction, where does that leave him. Is there any part of the man that Ginny loves still inside of him. Anyway that's all way in the future and probably more of an explanation that you wanted, but there you go!

You thought Clara was who's homely wife? I'm afraid I don't understand how I was being sneaky. The title refers only to the three punishments handed out by Harry to Angus and his friends.

Wow a thousand word author response. You should feel honored, you got your very own chapter. Unfortunately it's unbeta'd so hopefully I actually managed to make some sense.

I'm not sure if I like Kyla or not... she's very pushy, isn't she? I am, however, finding your story more and more fascinating as it goes on. Please don't wait long before you update again. I really want to know about the cave memories, all the memories we haven't seen, and especially that one of complete darkness. Hmm. I feel so awful for him!
And how DID Dudders get his comeuppance?
Sunday 6th May 2007 21:33Harry Potter and the Toll of Destiny (Author Response)
Well she had to be. A shrinking violet's got no chance with Harry. If you'll recall it was Ginny who pursued Harry throughout their relationship. Harry likes intelligent women, who are direct, honest and confident.

I'm glad your enjoying it. I always like reading your comments. Sorry, but I don't have a lot of control over the schedule. The chapters are very big, and my writing is fairly rough so it takes a while to get things ironed out. We're all doing the best we can though.

There is some fun stuff coming up, so keep reading.

Wow! Harry seems to always find the nicest people and then reacts badly. It is a problem he has always had. At least he protected Kyla even if his actions were a little severe. He is right though. They probably would have ended up in jail. Thanks for writing. I understand what you said in your authors notes about Hermione being concered about whether or not it is safe for Harry to see Ginny. Ginny has a lot to be angry about. What she doesn't understand is that Harry ran away partly because of Ginny's anger. I look forward to how you work this all out. Thanks for writing. p

Thanks for the review, Actually Harry staying away because of Ginny's anger is Ginny's greatest fear (other than Harry being killed). We see this come to the front a few times after they meet up again in the future.

Anotrher penetrating chapter. Clara revealed that Harry must have had pretty deep feelings for Ginny since he wen back to the shack and looked at her picture for long periods of time. His guilt persuded him to ot pursue the next step with Clara which could have turned out to just be a casual date. Will we go back to Clara to see if more interaction occurs? The story with Clara is intiguing. Harry does have feelings but we have no insight into his inner conflict with Ginny. I thought that the treatment of the three bullies was excessive and does reveal a shocking side of Harry that Hermione seemed to have treated too lightly. Your story has become a must read for me. I hope your rate of chapter publication becomes a little more frequent .... too long in between and you lose the feel of the story.

I'm not yet sure if we will see anymore of Clara in this book. There is a spot for her later in the book, but I'm not sure its worth bringing her back. Harry does not go back to the pub to see her, he's very uncomfortable by her attempt to befriend him, and he's embarrased that he didn't call her back after aggreeing to do so.

The three bullies was an interesting plot point, but while it was meant to be kind of funny, it was also meant to show that the Harry in this story is a war weary wizard. He doesn't view the universe as being fair, and that's a big part of why he's so over the top. Ruining the lives of three people he's views as having wronged someone he loves means nothing in the moment. Harry's always had a temper, and been quick to over respond to people who are bullying those he cares about. It's really a part of his personality. You can say whatever you want to him, you can do what ever you want, and he will let it go and forgive you. If you insult one of his friends, then he has no mercy, there is no greater crime in his eyes than to threaten his friends.

Hermione's reaction to the incident was tempered by the fact that she's still concerned with trying to keep Harry engaged in the treatment. If Harry doesnt want to listen to her anymore he's more than capable of starting to run again, and she can't afford for him leave to hide his embarrasment, or try to get away from her lecturing.

As for the updates issue, I don't have much control over that. My beta's work hard on making each chapter as enjoyable as possible for you, but it does take time, and they get them to you as soon as they are ready. Without their help the experience wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable for all of you. So I hope you stay engaged, but I know what you mean it's hard when my favorite stories have long breaks between chapters.

Well another fine effort. I am not usually an angst junkie but I like this story a lot. You seem to have some insight into the thought processes that Harry might have. I find it comforting on some level to see Harry being helped. Anyway thanks for writing and please keep doing it. W.

I was never really and angst junkie either, but Viridian caused me to start enjoying the dark side of HP stories, so if the story is too angsty, it's really all his fault.

I like the idea of Hermione dragging Harry back to world of normal emotions whether he wants to come or not. It makes me happy when she gives him what for.

Thanks for keeping up with the story!

Have I told you how much I really like this story? It's seriously one of the best I have ever read. Poor Harry, I think we are finally starting to understand a bit of what Harry is going through. I don't think he would be this way if he had just killed Voldemort, or the Death Eaters. I wonder what really happened. Which one of his friends did he hurt? I hope you update soon. Now I just want to say that I loved what he did to the bullies. It might have been a little extreme, but incredibly funny. Now what happened to Dudders? Update soon, we are waiting anxiously for it.

Well if you have told me before feel free to keep mentioning it. It makes me happy

You are quite insightful, I'm going to be very clever to keep you entertained. Thankfully I've got a Hermione on my side.

Yes I actually toned down the punishment for the Bullies my original chapter he was even more vicious, but i thought it was a bit much for Hermione to take. It should teach people better than to mess with Kyla though.

The next chapter should be out realitively soon I hope!
