I've read this about 4 times now without reviewing (that I can remember), and I continue to LOVE it. It's so perfect. Nothing out of character, nothing unbelievable. It was exactly what I would love to have written myself. It's just so right. |

Well I have come back to savour this story, now that I’ve given DH the distance (from fanfic) and attention it deserves. I just love the tone of this – savouring patience is a lovely sentiment. I’m so glad someone picked up Harry’s observation in DH that he would have years to spend with Ginny. This is a beautiful extrapolation of that thought. (Plus, I really like holding hands!) |
Friday 19th October 2007 14:19 | Savoring Patience (Author Response) |
Thanks! I like holding hands too. I've been reading a lot of fanfics in which H & G declare their passsion (or even more) the very same night, or the very next day, and those stories really seemed to miss the point. ~Ken |

Hi again, Rhetor. I followed you over here after reading Minding the Baby and thoroughly enjoyed this companion piece as well. While Harry actually is not my favorite character from the series (I know - I'm a Philistine), the thought of him realizing that he can now savor his life and his love for Ginny moves me greatly. Would you be offended, though, if I admit that I got my biggest chuckle out of your author's note? Zefirelli-style passion, indeed. Methinks I was not the only person affected by seeing Romeo and Juliet at a tender age. Anyway, thanks for another great read - I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. |

I'm grateful your your review. I'm glad somebody got the line about Zefirelli. Actually, although his film of R&J did make a big impression on me as a teenager, I was thinking more of something a theater diretctor of mine said, when I was twenty, about Zefirelli's stage production of it. He said that people had been portraying R & J for decades as if they were trembling poets or very pretty aristocrats, but that Zefirelli was the first director for years to remember that R & J are two teenagers in heat. The wallpaper should steam off the walls, he said. |

That' z exactly what i'm talking about, JKRowling, left blank spaces between this couple, just for us, the fans.
She left us a space to create this "interaction"

Jacynthe Saturday 4th August 2007 22:58 | Savoring Patience |
Yes. Very much in the (rather frustrating) spirit of JKR's story in which friendship and duty (not necessarily in that order) come first, and romance waits until after the dust has settled. And quite right that G should be the more forward of the two. |
Sunday 5th August 2007 20:11 | Savoring Patience (Author Response) |
Thanks again! Yes, HP in the hands of JKR is definitely more action/adventure than it is fluff, no question. So we get to write the fluff! Is G the more forward? I guess she is, but only until she realizes what he's getting at. ~Ken |

Oh thank you thank you thank you. this is the ending I would have really liked to see to DH thank goodness for fan fiction, and yours in particular. I understand that Jo didn't want to be trite by endingit all with a "snog fest", but you provided a lovely, satisfying yet not at all trite option. |

Thank you for those kind words. I'm so glad you liked it. I think this actually is the ending, but she just didn't think she needed to include it. (Well, okay, maybe not this exact ending, I'm not claiming to be able to read her mind or anything...) |

You know, i only started reading fanfiction after i finished DH and some of the stuff i read was...well, questionable. However, there is no doubt in my mind that if Jo were to continue the story for one more chapter before the epilogue, it would have featured something along these exact lines. It really captured the essence of what the post-war Harry would be thinking and feeling, I think. Good job on that!
P.S. I was almost giddy when you referenced To His Coy Mistress, one of my favorite poems.
P.P.S. I have to say, this story above all others may have provided me with enough inspiration to try out writing fanfiction for myself.
Great story! |

Oh no need to explain yourself at the end, I thought it was all quite beautiful. I too wanted more Ginny/Harry interaction at the end of Deathly Hallows, but hey, it wasn't all bad! But that is another reason I love fanfiction too!
I think too that they wouldn't have acted immediately after the battle to consumate anything, but agree also that it wouldn't have taken that much longer for that to become a reality!
Great story! |

Um, Ken are you alright? Maybe I am slipping but I detected not a single bit of angst in this story.
As a post-DH missing moment I think you kept true to the characters, and Jo's intent. For us readers Harry has kept his private life with Ginny well... private. You have done the same, but given a window for delicious speculation too. Bravo! |

*snort* Yeah, I'm feeling fine, thanks. My initial thoughts and feelings after DH weren't at all angsty, thank you very much, so this is what I ended up writing.
But if you're really hungry for some old-fashion, Rhetor-style tear-jerkers, stay tuned. I've got a story coming up called Minding the Baby which should suit you just fine...

Jade Seraph Thursday 2nd August 2007 04:59 | Savoring Patience |
Short, sweet, and to the point. I like it - and especially after you mentioned Harry's thought toward Ginny at the end of Deathly Hallows. Somehow, I really don't think they would be having a snogfest, even if their teenage hormones were active. I think you hit the nail on the head with Harry's sense of time now - he's never going to be one to rush anything, ever, including Ginny. It'd probably take another war to light a fire under him again.
Anyway, I liked the point where you contrasted Ron/Hermione with Harry/Ginny. I think Ron/Hermione has always been set up to be a very passionate relationship with lots of physical shows of affection and love, but Harry/Ginny has always been more about feelings and understanding of each other than anything else. They don't have to get all over each other the moment they lay eyes on each other - they're happy to share each other's presence and have the emotional relationship that's comfortable for them, rather than something rushed because of the war.
Kudos if that all made sense - and whether it did or not, I enjoyed this one-shot quite a bit. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, and counting freckles actually sounds like something Harry would do, since he's got all this time. |

This is very nice! I can certainly see how Harry thinks he has forever to explore his relationship with Ginny. Their conversation flows so naturally and the fact they always find the other's hand is just adorable... very Harry. You've done a really nice job on this and it definitely deserves a for tickling my fluffy spot! |
Wednesday 1st August 2007 22:31 | Savoring Patience (Author Response) |
I'm glad I tickled that spot. Actually fluff isn't my strong suit; I tend to gravitate towards tragedy and sorrow. But the ending of DH doesn't leave much room for tragedy or sorrow just now. (Well, that's not entirely true; my next story is about Andromeda Tonks -- watch out!) So I'm really happy that I did the fluff thing right. ~Ken |
Grandma Kate Wednesday 1st August 2007 20:49 | Savoring Patience |
What a lovely story with great insight to the relationship between Harry and Ginny right after the final battle!
It was mad are the better for your author's note, especially-Soon enough, I think, they'll be experiencing that headlong, hot, impatient, intoxicated, can't-get-my-hands-off-you, Zeffirelli-style passion that is their birthright and their delight. |
Wednesday 1st August 2007 22:26 | Savoring Patience (Author Response) |
Thanks, Kate. I value your good opinion.
I knew I'd get you with that line about Zeffirelli. You probably know which film(s) I was thinking of, too... But yeah, that was a fun sentence to write. (I was afraid people would think that I'm just a prude, or scared to write sex scenes, or something like that -- I wanted to make sure they got the point.) |

Thank you for that praise. Yes, I wanted more H-G in the book too, but that's because I've been reading H-G fics for a year. If I'd though harder about the novels themselves, I'd've realized that it wasn't going to be there. (On the other hand, the "break up" at the end of HBP seemed to me to be a setup for something involving Ginny in DH; but I must have misread it.) |

Ah...the luxery of time. Time enough to live. Great little sotry and quite moving. The heart of Harry and Ginny''s relationship is really friendship. They are comfortable with each other. They are young, but what happen to them in a way aged them. So there is a maturity in the relationship now. You captured that very well. |

Thank you! This is a great add in to the end of Deathly Hallows. It covered a lot of details JKR didn't. This is the kind of ending I like too. Thanks for writing. I hope to see a lot more "alternate endings" to DH. I love JKR's books. I'm just a hopeless romantic that like to think about "the rest of the story"! Unfortunately I can't write a coherent story myself so I depend on tallented people like you to do it for me. Looking forward to more... p |

*sigh*
That was lovely--utterly, completely, lovely. The simple (and quite comforting) act of holding hands when there is so much else whirling around them to be dealt with -- death, grief, demands of being the hero -- it just *works*. You've captured them both so well -- the true essence of them really -- from Ginny's grief, apologies and humor to Harry's calm honesty. They offer each other undemanding comfort, and through these simple gestures shows that their relationship will be a lasting one.
I really, really like this. It feels *very* organic and real. Well done. |

Thank you! I'm honored by your good opinion. You make me think of the Friar's advice to Romeo and Juliet: "Therefore love moderately; long love doth so." I really enjoyed writing about the hand-holding, since (as you say) it's so simple but so expressive and primal. A couple who kiss passionately for twenty minutes is one thing; but a couple who never let go of one anothers' hands all day? |
