Since Feeling is First
I have to say that was one of the emotion filled openings I've ever read. To read the conversation between Athur, whom I've always thought of a stoic, and Molly was heartbreaking, well done in capturing the feelings so well.

“God, Harry!” She turned around. “Aren’t you as tired of the ‘thought of me’ as much as I am of waiting for you?” - What a great line, you can feel her anger, helplessness and feelings for Harry in this one sentence!

Wow. Just being reminded of all the casualties of the war was so sad. I cried again today! You really have a wonderful way with words that seems to express exactly the right emotion. At least your writing makes me feel all kinds of things.....although I can be an emotional wreck at times .

I wrote this shortly after DH came out, and I was an emotional wreck, too! I'm glad it still has an impact. Thanks for reading!

Great story. It's so sad about Fred.

Yes, I'm still not over Fred. There was no chance to mourn him in the book, so fan fic. seems to be the place to do it.

Thanks for reading!

I loved your story! It's one of the best post-DH stories I've read so far - can't wait for your next story! Thanks for sharing!

Lovely story. You always deliver! The is the first post DH story that I've read, as I've avoided them (along with re-reading DH). I'm still in semi-denial over Fred. But I can't ever resist a St. Margarets story. Thanks for keeping the romance alive. Looking forward to Parts 2 & 3.
Thursday 6th September 2007 04:04Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I need to re-read DH! I wrote this based on my first feelings about the book - maybe going back would give me a different feeling. I kept thinking every time Harry thought about Ginny that poor Ginny was stuck at Hogwarts and wouldn't know he was thinking about her. *sigh* And I'm with you - the hole Fred left didn't just affect George. I guess we could be like H/Hr folks and stay in denial, but that doesn't seem right. I hope you're inspired to write more. With your action/adventure abilities, you could write some great Harry-as-Auror plot lines. Thanks for reading!

The Weasleys didn't really have a chance to face their loss in Deathly Hallows, and neither did we. You bring it home beautifully in the opening scene.

#####

"Ron was dividing his time between helping George with the shop and working with the contractors rebuilding Hogwarts."

:^) Am I perhaps seeing the faintest hint of a new life for "Rob The Builder"?
Sunday 26th August 2007 13:23Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I really hope this fic. is a bit of bridge to that nice epilogue. We know H/G and R/Hr will be happy, but we don't know *how* they will get there. This was my first attempt at figuring that out.

Ah, you're an astute reader! I think I have found a way to get a bit of Ron the Builder back into the post DH world. Thanks for reading!

Ahaha, I thought it was neat how even Kingsley believe all the Rita Skeeter articles way back about Harry and Hermione. Funny stuff. XD

LOL - well Kingsley is trained to detect Dark Magic - so that might have been why he was suspicious of H/Hr.

I love this. It is so sweet.

I do have to admit, I am a bit weepy lately (pregnancy hormones I suppose) but it made me laugh and cry (happy, frusterated and of course sad tears).

Looking very forward to parts 2 and 3.

Yay! Fluffy goodness! Just what I need before my first day of law school. I always love the way you portray Harry and Ginny. They're so sweet. Though I am a little surprised that it would take them a whole year to get back together, but all's well that ends well, eh? Thanks for writing!

Great chapter, I was not expecting Arthur and Molly to fight!!! but I can understand why it happened and why they were avoiding each other.

An inspired decision by Harry for the birthday present.

Looking forward to the next chapter already
Friday 24th August 2007 07:02Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I think that since Molly and Arthur are such different people and approach things so differently, they would have a hard time with their common grief. However, they love each other very much and have been together for a long time, so they would be able to find their way back to happiness.

Yes - Ginny is going to have a wonderful birthday!

I can't tell you my joy in reading this story. It's such a pleasure to see someone inspired to write post-DH! If this is just the first of three parts, I'm excited for the next two. You did a great job showing the feelings of Molly, Arthur, Ginny, and Harry. It seems so real, the feelings of loss mixed with anxiety about how you should feel, worrying about whether you're allowed to be happy, concern about how you should treat those that are closest to the loss. You did a fantastic job with the feelings in this story. I can't wait to read more!
Friday 24th August 2007 06:59Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I'm glad you liked this part -it wasn't a joy to write - thinking about all of those confilcting feelings in the characters I love - but that seemed to be where JKR left them. Luckily, I get to bring them along to happier times. Thanks for reading!

Since Feeling is First
Well, it's so nice to end on the note of Harry not being worried by the idea of the press finding out about Ginny! See? Harry is so brave!

I really enjoyed this. (Mostly the Harry parts, LOL. You know me and Ginny.) Harry seems a little shell shocked at first, and no wonder. He's sort of forgotten himself and still committed to what he feels are outside responsibilities. But it's also as if he's had enough of that and is slowly letting himself back in, and I think that's very realistic and keeping in character. Ginny is Ginny - spunky and impulsive and loving. They're very good together. The first part about Molly and Arthur and grieving for Fred was hard for me to read, in an emotional sense. My friends know I like drama and I LOVE flangst, but I don't like reading about deaths - maybe I've seen too much of it at work, so the fact that I was uncomfortable here means you were right on in terms of realistic emotional pain. I'm an avoider of death in my own stories (hey - it's the easy way out!). Coward that I am, I'd much rather the angst be about missteps and choices than about a loved one dying, so kudos to you for being so brave and treating such a tough issue with realism and love and even a little humor, but without melodrama. Keep it up!
Friday 24th August 2007 06:56Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Harry is brave (and so proud to have a girlfriend - like any 17 year-old)

Yes, the parts with Arthur and Molly were hard to write since they were overcoming their own missteps in how to deal with the death of a dearly loved son. (Not that there is a manual that teaches you how to do that) But JKR left quite a hole in the Weasley family and there's no way to get to the fluff without dealing with that. (And you know I'll do anything for my fluff)

I understand how you feel about writing about death - especially with your job. I don't think there's a manual that says you ever have to write about it. So don't go calling yourself a coward.

Dear St Margarets:
I was waiting for your story after DH was released.
I wonder if you are going to write something about the aftermath of the battle at Hogwarts, perhaps in flashbacks because I think there are a lot of feelings there.
About this 1st chapter I liked the "conversation" between Mr and Mrs Wesley but I felt that it hasn't enough about Harry's feelings, how he has adjusted to the new situation.Maybe working is the only way to forget so much pain. I don't know.
Please update soon. And thanks for sharing this witl all of us.
Friday 24th August 2007 06:52Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
In the next chapter there will be more about Harry. Ginny and the Weasleys really had to come first to establish the tone (and the problems) of the story.

Since Feeling is First
I love it. It's sweet, and hesitant (the characters, not the flow of the story), and it's like Ginny and Harry have to start over, because so much has changed for them. And I like the way that you've handled the Fred dying issue, where no one really knows what to say, they just go day by day. It's great, really. I can't wait to read more!
Friday 24th August 2007 06:49Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I love the idea of H/G starting all over again in a way - I thought JKR really emphasized how young they both were in DH and it's sort of like a new beginning for fan fic. writers if you can get them past the grief. Thanks for reading!

Love it, love it. Can't wait for the next parts! I was left with a sense of loss when I realized we weren't going to have any details in the book but this makes up for it!

As for everyone trying to be normal, I guess we could all say that "normal is the watchword." (To quote Veronica Mars.)
Friday 24th August 2007 06:34Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Yes - "normal" starts to look really good after so many dramatic events - poor Harry. I think my own sense of loss drove me to write this story, so thank you for saying that.

Oh...you're so wonderful. You might get sick of hearing it, but I do love your stories. Every time you write I get excited. I'm so very pleased with this story and I can't wait to read the rest. You mentioned how much you needed to write this story; if nothing else, Jo left the door wide open for us H/Gers. We can play to our heart's content. I'm just happy you're so talented and can write the middle of what Jo started and ended for us. Keep writing, m'dear. I'll -along with a whole slew of people- will keep reading. Bravo!

No, I never get sick of hearing I'm wonderful Thanks for being so sweet. I did need feel a need to write this story and I'm glad it's touched a chord with everyone. It hasn't been that long for us to get over our grief at having some of our characters die and having the series end. So this is part of the process, I guess.

Since Feeling is First
This is fantastic.

I loved seeing that it wasn't immediately happily ever after for our beloved characters. Molly's shock over Harry coming to the Burow to see Ginny - only Ginny was so funny. Very realistic. And Kingsley thinking that Harry and Hermione were a couple was, well, laughable.

I can't wait to see how the public reacts to seeing Harry and Ginny on a date! This next chapter is going to be wonderful. I can't wait!!!!

I can't wait to read the rest of the story. Please update soon!

OHMIGOSH, I have been waiting for you to write a post-DH story and I have to say it was worth it! And I love, love, LOVED how you tied in little bits from your other universes - Ron the Builder, Days of Destiny - yet made it still feel totally plausible in the canon world. After the year they had, it\'s nice to see that they still have to work at the happy ending, but there was a lovely amount of fluff too. After all, Harry and Ginny are together and that makes my heart (and inner fangirl) happy (SQUEE). Can't wait to see what's next!!!
Wednesday 15th August 2007 19:20Since Feeling is First (Author Response)

I seriously have read this six times now. I am having very conflicting emotions about DH, but time, additional readings, and fanfiction is helping me put the pieces together. This is my favorite so far, and I was so happy to see you posting something.

I think that, after the jubilation of defeating Voldemort has passed, the world would be very close to what you are describing here. People trying to get back to normal, but realizing that 'normal' isn't what it used to be.

I really adore your Ginny - she's tough and selfish and understanding and helpful - she's REAL. Thanks again for posting and know that I'm just one of many who's waiting for the next installment.
Wednesday 15th August 2007 19:18Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I'm glad that someone else is having conflicting emotions about DH. This is my first stab at coming to terms with that ending (not the epilogue - I loved the peaceful world in that) I certainly second-guessed myself while writing this, so it's good to know it stood up to that many re-readings.

Oh, Ginny - what that girl went through in DH. She deserves a very happy birthday. And I get to provide if for her. Thanks for reading!

I like this. The anvil part made me actually clamp my hand on my mouth and laugh!

My only problem is, I have to warn you, I'm doing a WIP in which Harry and Ginny encounter similar problems, so I'm actually wary to even read this, but as your friend I figured I should and all that. Are you going to be okay with me doing that? It won't be the exact samy thing, but um... /awkward. Feel free to delete this and PM me...
Wednesday 15th August 2007 19:01Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
That's perfectly fine. You know how fan fic. is - there are certain logical outcomes that no one could take credit for. (Like all those Harry helping Teddy stories or how he gets together with Victorie)

I'm glad to know you think H/G would have similar problems - that makes my choices sound logical.

Since Feeling is First
Well, St. M, you went right for the heart, and, as usual, hit the bullseye dead center. There were so many wonderful moments, wonderfully depicted: The initial inability of Molly and Arthur, the most loving of parents, to share their grief; Ginny continuing to hide her feelings for Harry, her initial anger, then realization what she was doing; the symbolism between Ginny and the ripening apples; and the heavenly dance club.

Good for you to have Ron helping with the rebuilding of Hogwarts. That's exactly where he belongs in your universe.

But best of all, you got H and G together, though you caused my stomach to fall when they first started talking with each other. I won't repeat what I was thinking.

Thanks for providing the scenes that JKR left and filling them with your wonderful prose. Can't wait to see the second chapter.

Hope all is well with you and the family, Jim
Wednesday 15th August 2007 18:58Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Well, I would think H/G would have a bit of a rocky start (easily overcome by two minutes of conversation) since it is hard just to pick right up after a year apart. But if any pair could do it, these two could.

I really needed to write this story for me - I'm glad it's helped my readers as well.

Wow! Just wanted to tell you how excited I was to see a new story from you! You should take it as the tremondous compliment it is when so many reviews say how excited they are that you are writing another story. I actually did a little jump in my chair when I saw your name in the recent updates!

I really enjoyed your first chapter (and I'm a bit sad you said there are only going to be three!) Loved to see Molly and Arthur having some realistic problems dealing with Fred's death. I have to admit I was a tad suprised that Hermonie suggested Harry leave Ginny alone. . . . I almost see that as something Harry would think of himself. But I'm glad they are together, or getting there anyway.

Loved that Harry got tickets to the Quidditch game for Ginny, what a neat idea. And I absolutely ADORED Molly's joking about going out with them. Too evil! HA

Looking forward to your update. Oh, what are you doing with Ron the Builder? Is that going to be coming soon? I don't have a ton of time on the net, and I haven't ventured into LiveJournals or anything where you may have updated. . .

THANKS
Kelly

Thanks Kelly! I guess there isn't a whole lot of post-DH out there yet. This isn't a long involved story, but it's something I wanted to write for H/G.

I'm trying to get over the fact that JKR said Ron was Auror so I can somehow sneak him as a builder into a story. I did that a little bit here. I don't have anything new to read on lj - I've been working on this story with betas since it's been tough for me to write. Part II is done and Part III is almost done. Thanks for reading!

I just don't believe that Harry and Ron would be so involved in the rebuilding of Hogwarts and the Ministry. I would think that since so much had been expected of them, that they would take this time to finally act like kids again. Sure, they are of age, but they aren't technically fully qualified having not finished their last year of Hogwarts.

Other than that, I think you have their feelings and characters spot on. I've always liked your work (especially the Lee Jordan story)
Wednesday 15th August 2007 13:36Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I totally agree with you, which is why I was so dismayed that Jo didn't indicate that in her interview. So this is my attempt to pull Harry away from so much responsibility so young and provide a little fun with Ginny. Thanks for reading! I liked Lee's story, too. I'm still sad about Fred.

Mary,
I search PS and your lj everyday but imagine my surprise whilst reading my mail I came upon the new story notification. You had posted that it
might take you awhile to write again to it was a joy to read something new.
The chasm that JKR left was vast and wide open to fandom. Your characterization of Ginny was right on. Immediate anger and then eventually understanding. Thanks for mentioning Hedwig, Fred and Teddy and Days of Destiny. I wondered if you had heard about JKR saying that Ginny had a career with the Holyhead Harpies before marrying Harry. Great setup perhaps? Also open to interpretation who is to say Ron and Harry signed up at Auror Academy the very next day. Perhaps building was open to Ron until Harry convinced him to sign up. Hope there is lots of fluff ahead. I love the Weasleys too! Also waiting for more of Charlie's story.

I just haven't had the time to format this for LJ, but I will get it up there after our vacation next week. Sherry is going to post the next part while I'm gone.

Yes, I'm going to incorporate Ginny's future Quidditch career in this - I'm glad she's going to have a fun career. I couldn't let Hedwig's passing go without a mention. I loved that owl, too. I'm thinking about how I can sneak Ron as a builder into a story. Thanks for reading!

Oh it's wonderful! I've been aching to read a story like this. Ginny telling Harry about her favorite soap opera, just hanging out together. You wrote the aftermath of DH so well, the pain and... the moment with Ginny dancing and thinking of Fred dancing was my favorite. Joyfulness! I love how Ginny's reaction to Harry so perfectly mirrored Molly's reaction to Arthur. Ginny would probably not be happy to hear that. No one likes to be told they are like their mother. LOL!

I'm excited for the next two parts. Great writing.
Wednesday 15th August 2007 04:18Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
LOL - I think Ginny is very similar to her mother - except she's usually more diplomatic. I enjoyed in DH when Harry noticed that Molly and Ginny had the same eyes. Thanks for reading!

Aww, yay! Harry is so Harry, wanting to do the right thing and not bother anyone. I love that only thinking of Ginny helps him through the day. And as always, I love your Ginny. I'm already annoyed with the handful of H/G I've read post-DH that has Ginny all furious at Harry for leaving her during the Horcrux hunt. But this is much more IC, I think. I can't wait for part 2!
Wednesday 15th August 2007 04:17Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I don't think that Ginny would be angry at Harry for leaving her to hunt Horcruxes - but I do think she would be sensitive to him pulling back. Since Harry tends to pull back when he's upset, that might be an area of contention between them now and again. (Every couple has them) Thanks for reading.

Thank you, thank you, for giving me the marvellous scenes and moments in this to mourn for Fred.

It's beautifully done. A marvellous mix of tears, chuckles and pleasant smiles.

I particularly loved Ginny's thought about Fred's dance-club of an afterlife, warming everyone up for George's eventual arrival.

I think one Harry's great gift to the Weasleys is his experience at King's Cross. What a comfort to them all. I have more about Ginny and her family in the next chapter. I just love my Weasleys.

Oh, how sad and lovely and hopeful all at once. The gradual shift from awkward and painful moments to laughing and joking and just generally being more comfortable felt incredibly real to me.

Mary...

Days of Destiny, and hints of Ron the Builder?! Even your angsty bits have warm fuzzies!

Harry is a bit lifeliess, but I think that is part of the point, isn't it? He's being drained by all this, and hasn't had much time to himself, and is being pulled in all sorts of directions.

Quite funny to imagine that Molly didn't quite realize (or believe) that Harry really was interested in her little girl!

thanks for sharing

Wednesday 15th August 2007 04:10Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Molly was so suspicious of the Horcrux hunt that she didn't try to keep H/G apart during the wedding, etc . . . That just told me that she really hadn't clued into them as a couple. But I think she needs all the good news she can get and is pleased to see Ginny happy. (And Harry too) Thanks for reading!

Since Feeling is First
I loved the scene with Molly and Arthur - it was so sad but so very true, we do try to 'hide' in those moments, unsure as to what to do.

I remember my sister (after dad died) told me to cheer up Mum. I yelled at her, asking her what I was supposed to do - it was an awful feeling.

The Harry and Ginny moments made me grin - even when she was yelling at him.

I'm looking forward to reading more

Lots more of H/G to come! And I think it's natural for anger to be part of grief. And there's nothing worse than trying to cheer someone up when you don't feel cheery. *hugs*

Since Feeling is First
I'm having a hard time getting a handle on this, and on my response to it. The emotions expressed in the exchange between Molly and Arthur are (if my memory serves) quite unusual for your work. It's almost like being snapped at by a pet that has rarely even growled before. Your range continues to grow.

I noticed the commentary about Harry's and Ginny's choices in other reviews, and thus went back and re-read this chapter. On second reading, I think that as an exploration of what might happen if H&G made those choices, this works very well; everything flows smoothly from those choices. I think that what weakness there may be in this work stems from whether or not the reader believes that H&G *would* make those choices -- and that will (I think) often proceed from how strongly *you* believe that H&G would make the choices you show, for the reasons you show.

Having said all that, I should stress that I still liked this a great deal, and I'll be watching carefully for future chapters.

Wednesday 15th August 2007 04:06Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Oh, thanks for reviewing over here. I don't know how much conscious choice H/G had in drifting along for two months - to me it's more about habit and how you deal (or not deal) with your emotions. Hence the title and the poem. Since there isn't much I can do about a reader's beliefs - it's good to know that the story progresses logically. Thanks for reading!

Beautiful as usual Spot-on characterisations of Harry and Ginny. The argument between Arthur and Molly tugged on my heartstrings as well - it's just something that only the worst possible situation could drive them to.

Although I found it surprising that Kingsley would have put Harry and Hermione together - for an auror who has been around the trio quite a bit, I thought he would have picked up on Ron/Hermione. But I'm sure you have a good reason for it, you always do

Bravo, I love it
Tuesday 14th August 2007 18:18Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
LOL - like I told Sherry - Kingsley is an Auror, so he is always looking for Dark Magic - H/Hr was in the Horcrux, you know. No, actually - he wouldn't have had a chance to see Harry with Ginny - just with Hermione. Like most everyone in the magical world *sigh* The Quidditch Match should clear that up for everyone.

Hehe, I see Ron is still involved in building. Good for you.

Poor Arthur -- even thought the twins are Prewett in build and appearance, or perhaps because of that, I think they were Arthur's favorites in the same way Percy was Molly's favorite (not that parents have favorites!). The way he acted when George was hurt...and how he tried to protect the twins from Molly's wrath and always admired their inventive spirit. And maybe he even envies Molly a bit. She got to take out the rage of her grief on Bellatrix -- Arthur is just plugging away at his work.

Just like Harry thinking he'd be in the way of the grief instead of help with it.
Tuesday 14th August 2007 13:29Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I hate to think of poor Arthur and Molly. Honestly, the hole in that family is huge - but as long as they pull together they will be all right.

The minute I saw that you had posted a post-DH story I was so excited. I have a been a little disappointed in some of the post-DH stories out there. Huzzah - fic from you is always a treat, and this one is setting up nicely. I particularly like that Molly and Arthur are having trouble dealing with things as well: as Harry's growing up involved learning that Dumbledore was human and fallible, so this looks like you are setting up Ginny to find the same about her parents, though hopefully in a less traumatic manner!

Outside your own stories and meta, I think Days of Destiny may well be your everlasting stamp on the fandom - I've seen it turn up in a few places lately (all with your permisison) *g*.

I was delighted to see the Chapter Alert in my mailbox. Maybe a bit surprised as well to see you posting so soon after DH. I especially loved the scene between Arthur and Molly. It seemed to hit just the right note. I think the idea of Harry and Ginny fumbling back to some normalcy, not quite sure how to act towards each other, rings true. Poor Harry. By sending Hermione to Australia, you've taken away the one person who would help him figure things out. Hermione might be wrong, but she'd never be uncertain.

This chapter had an endearing awkward-to-comfortable tone that was very comforting, very much like an old friend. Thanks, old friend, for sharing it with us.

I really wanted to depict a little bit of the mess JKR left Harry and Ginny with at the end of DH. We know that 19 years later it all works out, so there's no need for despair, but still . . . the process of healing takes time. Anyway - more healing in the next chapter and some fun fluff at the end. Something I craved in DH. Thanks for reading!

I am so glad that you have started more fics and are hopefully going to continue with them.

Another great job as always

I love the way you have portrayed the emotions of Mr & Mrs Weasely as well as with Harry & Ginny, it just makes it seem alot more real as for ginny forgiving Harry so quickly for him not being around is because she remembers what he's been through and he has been through alot, not just the past year but his whole life, having to deal with the loss of his parents, then Sirius, Dumbeldore, Fred, Remus & tonks as well. not forgetting having to destroy voldermort's Horcruxes & voldermort himself.
O & to top it off he has a godson who is going to need Harry as well, not to say that Andromeda isn't capable of taking care of little Teddy, but Teddy is going to need a male figure around as well, dont you think.

Anyway looking forward to more fic from you.

Since Feeling is First
Hmm, if anyone could make me believe that Harry and Ginny could just go on rosy-peachy, after the way he behaved towards her in the last book, you would be that person. Still, I didn't quite buy it. Ginny's anger was natural (unlike in the books, where she seems to just be ready to kiss Harry whenever JKR wants her to, no matter how unrealistic that is). But her anger subsided too quickly, considering she wasn't just miffed, but had good reason to be hurt. Then again, perhaps some girls really are that easy-going (unlike me, who would stay good and mad for a while). Still, I think that Harry would be more sensitive to the fact that Ginny needed his support in her grief. That's a no-brainer.

Other than this (and it's really not you, but JKR that I blame), I loved this story. Harry's keen observation of the Number One Mum's desk was touching and endearing. He does display a high level of empathy for everyone (except Ginny). I also loved the half-glimpsed interaction between Molly and Arthur. I kept wondering how would Molly react after the shock wears off (or IF it wears off). You striked the right balance with her.

Glad to hear you're planning to write more.
Tuesday 14th August 2007 12:37Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Hey, I'm with you on Ginny and her anger! Don't think that's the last you've heard from Ms. Weasley. And you're right when you say:

He does display a high level of empathy for everyone (except Ginny).

Part II contains more of Harry's learning curve about Ginny (and it's a steep one considering the pedestal he put her on in DH). Thanks for reading!

I must say I'm with rhetor on this. I really struggle to see Harry and Ginny spending that much time away from each other. I also struggled with the way you portrayed Harry too. The boldness that he had developed through HBP and DH was gone. The 'going with his instincts and ignoring Hermione's logic' that was so important in DH, was also missing.

Sorry.
Tuesday 14th August 2007 12:08Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
Yes, I wondered what happened to bold Harry at the end of chapter 36 as well. Believe me - I didnt' like writing these characters this way, either. But I had a choice to blip over the fact that Harry couldn't deal with Ginny and her grief (or even find the boldness to excuse himself from the Great Hall when he had to have Luna help him) or I could try to figure out what the heck JKR was doing with his (and Ginny's) characterization at the end of that chapter and explore it a bit. Missed opportunities tend to multiply, as do the habits of keeping someone on a pedestal and safe. I would hope H/G wouldn't be so miserable - but there's absolutely nothing in canon to prove or disprove this line of inquiry in JKR's characterization.

Whee! A new Mary-fic! And it\'s as Maryfic as always. You do this so well, you know. And I find I\'m lost for words. These emotions were so strong, and so real and so well portrayed. How typical of Hermione to say Ron and Ginny needed a bit time, and how typical Harry to interpret it the way he did. He needs comments that help him understand he\'s important to someone and needs to be there, not the other way around. And Ginny - forgetting that Hedwig is no more. *sniff*

What a marvellous (i.e Maryfic) way to start the day. With anguish and tears and laughter - and hope and love. Ahh. And you got Ron working with the contractors - Yiihaa! Are you working your way around that Auror stupidity? I\'d love it, because I do agree... (and I want to read RtB).

Yes! This was fantastic. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story Mary. My favorite line in the story was definitely: “God, Harry!” She turned around. “Aren’t you as tired of the ‘thought of me’ as much as I am of waiting for you?”

You tell'm Gin! I'm just as tired waiting for them to finally get the writing time they so deserve. I truly missed their togetherness in DH. I just want them to go on forever and forever. Both Harry and Ginny deserve every bit of happiness... ooh, that would be a nice title to a HG fic. hmm. Oh, sorry 'bout dat.

I'm glad you liked this. It's angsty for me. Yes, I going to have to write some sort of version of Ron the Builder. I can't seem to give it up.

Ron was dividing his time between helping George with the shop and working with the contractors rebuilding Hogwarts.
Are we getting a different version of Ron the Builder?! I hope so!

Good job on the start - I'm officially hooked. Again. Keep up the excellent writing!

I'm thinking about doing a three-part story for R/Hr that follows this one. I just can't let that go, can I? Thanks for reading!

Oh, oh, OH!

*wipes away tears*

I almost missed this, because I\'m not used to you posting here before your LJ (unless I somehow missed it *horrors*) and this was WONDERFUL!

It was so sad in the beginning, I just wanted to burst out crying, but once Harry and Ginny got together, I was just smiling and loving every word. I can\'t wait to read about the Quidditch match!

I\'m so thrilled to see you writing again, because I know DH hit you (and a lot of us) hard. I also loved how you threw Ron into helping with the rebuilding of Hogwarts. I think I may start holding my breath again that Ron the Builder may come to pass eventually, especially since it appears that Ron didn\'t become an auror, but worked with George at 3W. (ps...PS kicked this as a lame review the first time I tried to post for using Weasley's Wizard Weazes' initials, lol!)

Great job, I absolutely loved this!

Tuesday 14th August 2007 11:51Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
You haven't missed a thing. I haven't had time to format for lj, so it made it here first. *hugs*

DH did hit me hard - this is my way of dealing with it, I guess. JKR left them a lot of baggage, poor dears.

LOL - I can't let go of Ron as a Builder, can I? I think I'm going to write a three part story for R/Hr after this one.

Thanks for finding me here. It means a lot.

I've been keeping up with
your work since the talking Jarvey, and I have to mention as another reviewer did that I thought you might be some time before writing a post DH story. You have not disappointed me, as I already are the thoughtful care you have taken with these beloved characters andd their now too-real relationship. You have engaged in so much fascinating speculation, as have we all, but I feel like there is much fins nd joy and love to be had with that 19 year epulogir at a natural conclusion. I feel like your stories will always take me there, as they have so many times in the past.

Oh, that's nice to know you've been reading since Magic Within, Magic Without. Two books ago!

This one was a challenge - believe me. JKR gave H/G some real issues to work through. Thanks for reading!

Oh, Kelley, I was so unhappy with the way she left H/G at the end of Chapter 36 - with not one word between them! I had to work it out somehow. Thanks for reading!

Since Feeling is First
For some reason this was hard for me to read, even though the two of them are gradually bumbling in the right direction. It does ring true that, in or around a house of mourning, someone might feel uncomfortable or even guilty about being in love, or that someone wouldn't want to dishonor a family's grief by intruding his own feelings of desire.

But...

I guess I don't want to believe that Harry, after a year of yearning for Ginny, and Ginny, after a year of pining for Harry, would be so mutually, impossibly stupid as to think that they couldhelp one another by leaving one another alone, nor that Harry would be so thick as to translate "a lot of time with her family" as meaning "don't talk to her at all." I don't want to believe that Ginny -- Ginny! -- would buy a line about its being unladylike to floo someone you cared about. But maybe they would. I get uncomfortable reading about people who love each other but accidentally hurt each other and themselves through good intentions, fear and shame. I want to reach through the screen and shake them -- especially when they were asked what they'd do if they could put their feelings first, and they didn't tell the truth.

Harry and Ginny do have Quidditch in common, and it's not a bad instinct for him to guess that she'd like to see a game with him, even on her birthday. I'm hoping she won't see it as insufficiently romantic, though. At this particular moment in their relationship I'm sure she'd appreciate something more "girly" as a gift, but he's neither sufficiently knowledgeable nor sufficiently confident to choose such a thing. On the other hand she might appreciate not being treated as just any girl, but rather the girl he knows. (Really he should have asked a woman, but who? Hermione's in Australia, Fleur would probably guess wrong for Ginny, Tonks is dead...)

The coma and the artificial separation of the lovers on Days of Destiny was a nice metaphor for what Harry and Ginny were doing to each other. I noticed that you had Ron working with the building contractors, you sly girl.

Well: Of course I'm hooked and I want to read more, and you've got me worrying about them. But I do hope these silly children will have the courage to tell each other what they mean to each other. I mean, really!

I agree with you - which is why I couldn't believe it - still can't believe it, that JKR left H/G the way she did at the end of chapter 36.

So a fan fic. writer has two choices - either decide that the sandwich and good night's sleep helped Harry speed up the "hours, days, weeks, years" to finally talk to Ginny, or persue JKR's reasoning and try to understand the whys and wherefores of Harry (and Ginny's) behavior at the end of that chapter.

I chose to follow JKR's line of reasoning, as much as I hated it - that is: Ginny being caught up in her family tragedy and Harry still not getting the scope of what's happened beyond the fact that he survived and did his task. (Bless him)

As painful as it is to read, I can assure you it was more painful to write. But I did it because the little fluffy story about Harry taking Ginny to a Quidditch match I had originally planned to write felt totally dishonest in light of the condition she left Harry and Ginny and the Weasleys in at the end of Chapter 36,

Never fear - this angst is a necessary evil on the way to recovery. Thanks for reading.

I admit I was totally shocked to see this, since it wasn\'t in your journal. Then I was all paranoid that I missed it or something.

Since Feeling is First
Oh St Margarets... The e.e. cummings poem and that terrible horrible perfect first scene got me back into the empty feeling at the end of the last battle. The sentence
Hearing her parents fall apart was worse than hearing her parents argue.
expresses it all.

And that was because I didn't know then what Harry had been doing (or, more importantly, not doing). The first need of grieving is to acknowledge your loss and the loss of the grieved one.

There is so much to comment on. My heart leapt at Ron helping the contractors and Hermione being with her parents. But the heart of your story is the growth of the relationship between Harry and Ginny. It is in your capable hands again.

And 'we'll always have New Zealand'.
Tuesday 14th August 2007 11:22Since Feeling is First (Author Response)
I'm thinking about doing a three part story about Ron and Hermione. It won't be as ambitious as the orginal Ron the Builder, but hopefully I can make a case for Ron's career in it.

This was torturous to write - I can't tell you. I hope it wasn't so bad to read. Thanks for reading as always.

This was so lovely, Mary. I loved the mention that Harry still doesn't have an owl. Sniff. The emotion was so real and so true, yet not over-the-top. Neither of them are okay yet, but they're both putting the pieces back together. I really enjoyed this peek, and I can't wait to see the next part.

Oh! A new story! I\'m so glad you did it. And I noticed that Ron\'s helping with construction at Hogwarts, that was a nice touch.

I really liked Harry\'s thoughts about the people in the Hall of Desks, and the way he imagined their lives.
A also think that it was nice the way that Harry blindly took Hermione\'s \"they\'ll need time with their family\" line and went on, trusting her to be right (even though she wasn\'t).
Thanks for writing again so soon.

I am so glad you are doing a post DH fic. I've always enjoyed your writing. You have such a wonderful grasp of romance and a way of making the mundane aspects of life become magical in the way they become a part of your characters. I am really looking forward to where you will take this three aprt story.

thanks,

Oh my...I LOVED this! I was kind chuckling when I read this. I thought that you do angs pretty well! Ah, but the fluff did creep in at the end. Lovly story and realistic. That scene between Molly and Author was sad and touching. The sadness, the despair, the awkardness of gomg through the motions of living after a death is heartbreaking.

The reawakening of Harry and Ginny was touching too. Looking forward to the other parts.
