Looks like Dumbledore is doing some personal checking on Harry's magic. Maybe he thinks Harry has his teacher's bamboozled? Well, he does but not the way Dumbledore thinks.
The Quidditch game was another brilliant move. I was afraid something bad would happen, didn't think about Melissa being killed until you put her name in the chapter. Voldy's bastards are certainly not above using more than intimidation on students and not even remotely worried about being caught. Hmmmnnn, what am I missing?
Harry may sound a little more mature and a lot harsher than your average 12 yr old, but he's not going to let our favorite Headmaster's penchant for finding the good in people to stop him this time. One thing Harry said is so true, childhood is very overrated.

I read through all of this in one go, and was extraordinarily chuffed by it. Harry is very believeable as someone with PTSD running out his ears after twenty-three years of non-stop fighting and the loss of every single person he cares about. FASCINATING premise, and while I was a bit eyebrow-raised at the fact that a thirty-year-old man was (in effect) romancing an eleven-year-old girl, I liked the way you jumped right into it and adressed the issue. While I don't doubt that sexual activity entre eleven-and-twelve year-olds is a fact of life, it's true that Harry wouldn't have had time for anything for the fourteen years of his life after Ginny's death in his previous universe: and one thing that Harry is short on, even more than the averagely repressed Brit is the comfort of physical contact.
Please keep up the delightful work in this alternate universe you are playing in: I look forward to see what more Harry does as the universe diverges more and more away from what he's certain of from his past, but still hews to a curiously fated path.

| Well after almost 2 days of solid reading and very little sleep I have completed the story so far. Words escape me at the moment and about the best I can manage is WOW!!!! I am currently listening to the first 3 books on CD in my car on the way to work and keep making comparisons to NFP. As much as I love JKs writing I much prefer yours. I have very much enjoyed this book. couldn't leave it alone. (now my house is trashed!) lol.
I've noticed alot of setting up for the next chapter, and your words would flow. I also noticed that in the chapters where you didn't set up for the next chapter it took months for you to come up with the next part of the story. You must have noticed that too, because your back in your groove.
Loved the dream he had that he blew up the house. You had me there. Thought you were going to make Harry repeat first year for a third time after that scare. Or just end it.
I am also very pleased that you haven't got Harry running around with his scar burning and fainting all over the place. I realy like your Harry.
I'm also looking foward to your new interpitation of Goblet of Fire. You have a lovely set up for not only having the houses divided ,but also the schools. (Death Eater Boot Camp. Love it!) What will Harry do. Will Malfoy turn back up then? That should be some real fun.
Also looking foward to the Deatheater reaction to the ultimate prank in the grave yard. How ever will the Dark Lord get his body ? The stone is gone the bones are gone and there most likely aren't enough unicorns.
In closing I just wanted to say that I am happy that someone challenged you to the making of this story. I'm very impressed.
P.S. I realy understood why you got the Americans involved in the first time line. Was surprised you had to even explane yourself.

If you trace Dumbledore's behavior, his caution crept in after merged-Harry's own demeanor changed, such as his anger toward his parents during their conversation on Christmas Eve in the owlery.
After Riddle, I don't blame him for being cautious when Harry is acting so... unusual. |

| Worth the wait every time! Please finish this story even if it takes you years. I'd pay your mortgage for you to write stories full-time if I could afford it. I agree with your bringing in of American forces even if others didn't. Also, maybe Dumbledore's portrait could have given Harry some sort of code or info that only his past self could have known, so that he'd be inclined to trust/believe Harry when/if Harry tells him the truth... Love the character development, especially w/the Weasley parents. |

A good chapter with a real surprise. Despite the darker tone of the story as compared to canon, I certainly didn't expect Melissa's murder. And hooray for Neville. It's nice that you are developing his character as to show that the possibility of he being Voldemort's enemy doesn't look so far fetched.
I wouldn't say that the chapter was worth the wait since I tend to be impatient in such matters, but I'm happy to see it. I only ask that we see the next few chapters in short order, subject to RL constraints of course.
Dumbledore showed little hesitation in letting Snape use legilimancy on students nor in using it himself. Now he knows that there is a murderer at Hogwarts. Will he be willing to use it? Are there other Legilimens at Hogwarts that he trusts to help him?

Oh no, I can't believe you killed Melissa! That was so unexpected and sad. The scene with Millicent was good; hopefully she'll be able to avoid her sister's fate.
If I was Harry, this timeline would be really scaring me. Everything seems to be so much more intense than the first time around: instead of falling off his broom due to dementors coming close, Harry falls because he's personally attacked; students are expelled or murdered, and it's been less than 3 years since events have begun being altered; Harry's relationship with Dumbledore has been trash from the moment he got to Hogwarts. The violence is so escalated that it really makes me wonder if this whole time-changing experiment was just a huge mistake.

Hi Matthew,
I enjoyed this chapter (as usual), although of course I was saddened by the unfair death of Melissa, who was really growing on me as a character.
It's interesting to see you describe this as an "Action-Adventure" story. While I certainly appreciate the action elements in this story, I've always felt that its strength came from its dramatic elements (difficult decisions) and especially its character development.
I'm not surprised that the scene in Dumbledore's office gave you trouble; we seem to have quite a lot of those, and to some extent they're blending together in my memory. I don't know whether that's what you intended.
A lot of FF writers take the adults in the HP series to task for the child abuse that seems to be there, especially abuse of Harry and Neville. It's interesting, and certainly makes for dramatic dialogue.
Your assumptions about Snape in the first timeline suggest that he was still "Dumbledore's man" in the second timeline, even up to the moment he was dismissed. But perhaps Harry's interventions unintentionally pushed him away from Dumbledore (Harry in the first timeline, of course, never knew of Snape's true loyalties).
I'm assuming that the making of the Hat-Horcrux had something to do with Voldemort's putting the burglar alarm in the Cup Horcrux?

In canon, he moved the cup from it's former hiding place to Bellatrix's vault after sacking the Ministry, thinking Gringott's would be safer.
In the NOFP timeline, Voldemort had less soul, and therefore embarked on a more destructive campaign, and since Gringott's was to be sacked anyway, he left the cup where it was. |

Oh thankyou, thankyou, THANK YOU for the update. I was beginning to worry. Once again, another excellent chapter. It'll be interesting to see what the poison actually was and if it has Snape's signiture somewhere in it. Mr. Bulstrode's lake of surprise seems to have an explanation coming in some future chapter so I will look forward to it. That and the "small favor" the goblins are asking for. A Gobin attending Hogwarts perhaps....

If I was to give you any advice, I would say that you should completely abandon canon and make up your own 'DH' completely, otherwise your plot may seem a tad convolouted. This is a beautiful addition to what is quickly becoming my favorite HP fanfic ever.
First off, I loved the Neville portion of this chapter. After reading it I immediately scrolled back up and re-read that whole section again. I really loved that you were able to turn Neville's family's relief at him being a wizard into something completely different and almost, better. It definitely was much more powerful this way. This part: “Do you have any idea how much I hated myself?” Neville asked her, looking up. “I was the last of the Longbottoms, but I seemed to be little better than a Squib. My own family was so ashamed of me, so frightened that I’d embarrass them by not being magical, that they were willing to kill me to make sure it didn’t happen.” was particularly awesome. I've always liked Neville, but that made me consider his childhood in a slightly different light.
Secondly, I got a warm, fuzzy feeling when Fred and George disagreed for that brief instance during the Quidditch match. It happens so rarely in fics that it was kind of refreshing to see it here.
Thirdly, Melissa's death was a complete surprise, and I really look forward to finding out the details of what really happened (no matter what the wait between chapters - your updates are simply worth it)
Lastly, I'm still blown away by how good this story is. The characters seem so true to cannon, even after you've pretty much changed everything about them. I think the fact that you have created something completly of your own invention while still adding in the cannon timelines is pretty spectacular.
Now that I'm done gushing, I'll just go re-read this chapter one last time. |
