The Hog's Head
Well we can always count on Ron for an over reaction with a dash of hypocrisy. I actually didn't think Harry and Ginny went as far as this chapter suggests so that was a surprise. I know Harry's ability to forgive is an important part of who he is but sometimes I wish he would make more of a stand. I like that you have them digging Fred's grave by hand, it's a sweet touch that I could see the Weasley's taking on board in a heartbeat.

I figured that Ron would be the one to have the biggest let down to the end of the war, and also have the hardest time adjusting to his baby sister growing up. I actually had fun writing the fight scene.

Okay, so maybe I spoke too soon. I noticed there were duplicates of chapters 1 and 2, maybe I read the wrong one. Great improvement in this one, though.

Two thumbs up. (Though I can't agree with Ginny and Harry the night after the battle. That's just wrong! Not that Ron and Hermione waited, either... but still!)

They are not duplicate chapters. One is Mature-rated, the other Teen-rated. Two versions are required by PhoenixSong in Mature-rated stories for chapters that contain "Mature" material. There are a total of four in this story. The only differences in chapters one and two are the descriptions of Elizabeth Derby's wounds. Chapter 7 also has two versions, again for graphic violence; and chapter 54, the last chapter, has a Teen version for sexual content.

So there are no differences between the two versions you read (if you did read both versions), other than about three or four sentences where Elizabeth's injuries are described. The same is true in chapters one and seven. I will say that those differences do significantly detract from the story in the Teen versions by diminishing what I tried to portray as the horror of her death and Ginny's reaction to it.

I think J.K. Rowling would be pleased with your writing. Well done.

I'm shocked, I mean I knew they went to sleep together but....wow! I got to say I fully understand and partially agree with Ron's reaction. I think Harry shouldn't have done it, not just then, it was soon soon after the war! Still great drama, once again well done.

Interesting comment. My thinking is that they had both just gone through near-death experiences, and Fred had died. Harry and Ginny needed each other for comfort, and their reaction to being separated for almost a year while neither one knew if the other was alive, would have made them want to be as close to each other as possible.

Even in canon, it was clear that they missed each other tremendously during their separation. And as you will see, HH is a romance with everything that implies.

Well written chapter, and I do agree that the tension between Harry and Ron is well depicted. Small point, though: Ginny is not actually underage. She turned 11 in Chamber of Secrets, which means that by Deathly Hallows she should be 16 (maybe even 17 by the end), and the age of the consent in the UK is 16. Probably would be frowned upon if Harry was in his 20s, but he is only a year older than her. Still understandable that her brother feels protective of her, though.

Ginny's birthday is August 11, 1981, which made her seventeen on Aug. 11, 1998, the year in which this chapter occurs. In wizarding Britain, the age of legal adulthood is seventeen, not eighteen as it is in the Untied Kingdom.

As far as consent is concerened, assuming you are talking about sexual consent, I assume you are correct about its being sixteen in the UK; I'm not familiar with that (it's 16 in most states in the US).

However, sexual consent is different from legal adulthood. Since there is no teen sex in canon (Jo's explicit decision), a fic writer is free to establish whatever teen sexual mores he or she wants to, as long as it doesn't violate other parts of canon and is more or less consistent with general Western standards.

In The Hog's Head, I posit that wizarding parents can (or at least try to) maintain moral authority over their children until they are seventeen. That's where the conflicts come in, and in fact they are brought to a head in chapter 8, A Summer Of Peace.

I try to stick to canon in all the large things, and in this case I think that I do. I must add that I can't see how, in an environment like Hogwarts, among teenagers away from home who possess magical abilities, there wouldn't be a whole lot of sex going on.

Anyway, thanks for your review, and I'm glad you are liking the story. I really enjoy reviews like this because I enjoy talking about HP so much!

The tension between Ron and Harry was well written, and I liked the way they took some of this frustration out with the grave digging. Good way for them both to apologise.

“Ron, I’m sorry,” Harry said.
Ron nodded. "Me too."

Beautiful power in just a few word. And I love the grave digging. It was perfect for Harry to suggest they do it without magic. Lovely chapter.

Poor Ron. It probably doesn't help that Fred died but he also knows how Harry and Ginny feel about each other. He has overreacted and part of that is his grief over Fred. I'm glad Harry told him he was sorry. It really is probably theraputic for the family to dig Fred's grave by hand. A death in a family can bring out all kinds of strong emotions. I'm sure everyone is having to deal with a roller-coaster full of emotions about now. Thank you for writing. This is a really good story. I look forward to more of this story. p

Thank you so much. I think it's like Hermione said, Ron's brothers treated him as the baby but without any of the "protectiveness" they showed to Ginny.

But he and Harry are best mates, and after everything they went through, Ron will pull through.

Excellent again! One detail: students do not 'graduate' from Hogwarts...it's a British thing! S.
