AWESOME!!!!!!!! That was great brought a tear to my eye the emotions that Ginny felt remembering the battle. It makes me wonder what James and Albus thought when Lily told them about the text book |

A superb mother daughter moment - and I love how Lily is really like her mother in this, which is probably why her mum knows how to punish her. |

I really enjoyed this. It's very insightful, both into the relationship between mother and daughter and into the nature of someone so young being confronted with the need to do grownup things. |

While I am obviously very pleased at your decision to do this, honoured in fact, I think I should point out that each of my stories stand out on their own and are in no way linked to each other so this will not make that much of a difference if you do choose to read HR. |

I thought this was a lovely take on a child's eyes being opened to a parent's life. I really do see Harry and Ginny not giving the brutal reality of the war to their children. After all in the epilogue it was Ron who took credit (jokingly of course) for all the attention they were getting.
I could see a child getting details from a history book that made them think 'that's not how mum and dad explained it' and going to the source for the facts. I think that as a parent you want to keep the horror from your children as long as possible which allowed for this nice story.
Well done |

cheers, after reading so many history books, I wanted to write an account on this, and Lily just seemed the right person to read it.

Interesting take on the subject matter. We tend to forget that the "heroes" are just real people, pushed to do extraordinary things.
Unfortunately, I felt that this could have been much more--It was a nice story, but didn't have the depth that I was hoping for. I would have liked to see much more of a conversation between Lily and Ginny, and some real bonding happening because of it. Ginny could have shared more of her impressions and emotions, and Lily could have grown and changed because of it. I think that last statement of mine is really the crux here--no-one came out of this story changed for the better. Sure, Lily has a little better understanding of how blessed her life is, but hasn't necessarily become a better person because of it.
Still, an enjoyable read. |

wow! this was awesome!
I can see ginny and harry downplaying the roles that they played in the final battle but at the same time i could see them telling them everything about it because they want their kids to know how different their childhoods are and stuff....
loved the ending!

Kathryn, you have done it again! You've spun a charming tale with a deep message. Lily and Ginny are alike.
I liked this passage that showed that-
She smiled softly to herself as she imaged her mother and grandmother arguing about whether she should fight. Then she pictured herself in the same position. It was not hard to see why her mum had taken those actions, and her mum was right, she'd have found the courage. |

Your background as a history teacher has given you an accurate insight into how kids think of history--particularly when it involves their parents who couldn't possibly have been that cool. A pleasure to read. |
Sunday 6th April 2008 05:06 | A History of Magic (Author Response) |
cheers mate
but I have to say in JKR world, I find history boring or at the very least history of magic (Binns does not help - i'd love to have seen him jump on a table with a plastic sword and recreate a battle but somehow I don't think that would happen) so its not hard for kids to think like that |
santafe Saturday 5th April 2008 13:56 | A History of Magic |
This I like a lot. So pleased you wrote it. I'd never thought about how the next generation would feel reading about the history their parents created, though in a small way, I have been there myself.
Well done - exceeds expectations. |

I think they are lucky to have grown up in a different world not to worry about it. |
curren Saturday 5th April 2008 12:56 | A History of Magic |
i love these little snippets, and i've been especially eager to read a story about the battle from a complete outsider's perspective. Makes it even more fun when the next generation then reads it and tries to make sense of it. |

majolie Saturday 5th April 2008 12:37 | A History of Magic |
This was great. When I first started reading it, I thought, "How could Lily not already know about this?" But your explanation of how the stories she had grown up with did not seem to match the text book and also how she never really thought before that her parents were so young when it all happened makes sense. Kids never pay much attention to their parents' "ancient history" or really to anything about them as people, so this story really rang true.
I think a nice follow-up would be to have her take a real interested and talk to more people to get a better picture overall about the DA and what really happened. |
Sunday 6th April 2008 04:57 | A History of Magic (Author Response) |
Cheers.
When I was thinking about writing this, that crossed my mind too, but then after a bit of thought, I figured it would work anyway, I mean when I was 15, my parents stories would not have held that muh interest. |
