Beautiful Boy (He Has His Mother's Eyes)
I remember reading this before, but I do not remember whether or not I left a review... This is one of those "oh, wasn't that sweet" moments which is really so much more. Harry is growing up along with James. It's difficult to be a good parent when you yourself were inadequately ( or not at all) parented. I think this was a beautiful account of a pivotal moment between father and son. Bravo! Thanks for writing!

This was such a tricky story to write, but I really enjoyed it. Yes - Harry growing along with his kids is exactly it - the lessons you learn as a parent. Thanks for your kind review. It means a lot.

What a sweet story, I loved it! I can just imagine Harry stumbling through that meeting with James. What on earth would he do if he had to talk to Lily about "girly things?" I love stories about Harry, Ginny and the children. Keep writing.

Poor Harry - he'd probably buy a book (in a plain brown wrapper) and hand it to her. But he'd do his best. I like thinking about H/G and their family life - so you'll probably get a few more stories from me. Thanks for reading!

Wonderful, as always. I love the easy relationship that Harry and Ginny have forged--that's really what love is all about, right? Being perfectly happy and comfortable with the one you love. And the evident affection in the family is beautiful too.

I don't know if JKR had this kind of a happy ending in mind for Harry, but I think an affectionate family and a good relationship with Ginny is just the happy ending I want for him. Thanks for reading!

Another fabulous installment from you! I enjoyed this very much - a wonderful read over lunch while I took a break from my 'to-do' list. Such a simple, yet artfully depicted and heartfelt story - it was so real! Your characterizations and explorations past what we 'know' from these characters is fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it. It's a character-driven piece, so I was worried it wouldn't hold the reader's interest. I'm also glad that characters seemed real. James was hard to capture, but he was fun once I got the hang of him. Thanks for reading!

Beautiful Boy (He Has His Mother's Eyes)
This was so good! I really liked how you wrote Harry and Ginny. I could definitely see the canon characters, with years of experience and a lovely life together, in them. I also liked how you wrote James. He seems like any normal boy his age, with his own unique cheeky attitude. I liked how both he and Harry gained more insight into each other and how they interact (sometimes rubbing each other the wrong way). The part about James gaining insight into Albus's behavior was icing on the cake. The following line really made me think of Ron's thing with Lavender during their sixth year:

“That I shouldn’t be kissing girls I really don’t like.”

I was almost expecting Harry to use the story of Ron & Lavender as a parable to James's situation with Violet, but imagining his Uncle Ron all over a girl other than Aunt Hermione would probably have just distracted James from realizing what he himself needed to do about Violet. I liked the way you wrote it better.

Great story.

I'm glad that James seemed realistic to you. I had a hard time writing him. I didn't think Harry would be the type to tell stories about his friends - even if they were funny ones. And you're right James would have been distracted by Ron's story. Thanks for reading!

Beautiful Boy (He Has His Mother's Eyes)
I thought this was absolutely lovely and highly entertaining. I found it great fun to see the interactions between the characters as well as James's reactions to things. It was also very well written with no visible spelling or grammatical errors, which is quite refreshing. I could easily see this being turned into a short story and will certainly look for other stories that you write.

That was cute. I'm so scared for the day when I have to have "The Talk" with my children. (shudders at the thought). But that's part of parenthood. Very well done. I loved it.

I'm glad you liked it. I've discovered that you never get away with one talk - as your child ages and encounters more, you have to keep up with him/her. Luckily for me, I still have a few years before I have my hands full like H/G. Thanks for reading!

Love this story! The characters are so REAL! I wondered what Harry would be like as a father and this was the most convincing version of him I have read yet. And the line about what Uncle Vernon said to Dudley and Harry was hilarious.

What a nice little story. Although JKR has shown us that Harry and Ginny have children, you've shown us that they are parents.

I very much liked the way you portrayed James (although I retain a fondness for Sera -- maybe because we had girls). You did a wonderful job showing James as both confused and 'getting it.' I wouldn't be fourteen again for anything. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be a parent of teenagers again for anything. Your use of dialog to tell the story was very skillful -- as always.

Thanks for sharing this with us. It's always nice to see a story from you posted.

Oh, Sera! I'm so glad someone remembered her. Well, she can be the indulged granddaughter I guess.

It's true - being a teenager or being the parent of a teenager is stressful. I'm not really looking forward to it, but then it's life and I've enjoyed all of my son's stages so far.

I'm glad you enjoyed H/G as parents. Thanks for reading!

Glad you liked my comments, St Margarets. Though I suppose I should add that my oldest is a daughter, and if there are boys feeling her up at age 14 or 15, someone is going to be grounded for a year, and possibly--assuming I can find a way to hide the evidence and do it while the perpetrator is blindfolded so as to be unable to identify me--lose their hands.

Beautiful Boy (He Has His Mother's Eyes)
Another charming slice of life, St Margarets; thanks very much! I'm a father of four, and the oldest is almost where James is now, and I wonder about these sorts of things--about what I've learned, if anything, and how I can pass it on to my children, and how they will understand it. Harry and Ginny and their children are thus a kind of stand in for all of us: their dramatic and heroic pasts are going to seem, more than anything else, distant and impressive and little intimidating to their children (and may I say that you have sketched out a very persuasive adolescent James here), and thus the lessons they try to take from their convoluted romantic pasts to use as a guide to their children will carry baggage with them, baggage that may result in confusion and resentment. The rest of us may not be dramatic heroes, but we have our own pasts which are similarly strange and awesome and unaccountable to our children, and thus we face our own possible resentments and miscommunications with them...especially when we're talking about feelings and sex and all the other parts of growing up. Thank you so much for making Harry and Ginny and their world that much more real for all of us!

Oh, thank you so much for reflecting back what I was trying to do in the story. It's very gratifying to know I struck those notes. This was a difficult story to write for all of those complex reasons you listed. And I'm so glad I got James right.! I've been a teenager - but not a teenaged boy. My son is ten, so I have a few years of relative quiet (I hope) Thanks for reading!

Love it, love it, love it! I adore reading these wonderful little stories of Harry and Ginny dealing with their growing children. As I read the canon, I remember just hoping and praying that Harry would get the chance to have this, and it's such a delight to see your version of it playing out. Wonderful as always!

Beautiful Boy (He Has His Mother's Eyes)
I always love your stories! This was perfect. Wonderful characterization for Harry, Ginny, and James, and well done separating out the POV of each. It's not easy to keep perspectives separate when telling a story. Also, brilliant action and setting descriptions. That can often get lost in a dialogue-driven story, especially a one-shot. I really enjoy reading stories about how Harry and Ginny deal with their teenaged children. Keep up the good work, and I can't wait for more stories!
Sunday 6th July 2008 10:37Beautiful Boy (He Has His Mother's Eyes) (Author Response)
I'm glad you liked the characterization and thank you for noticing the (little) action. It's hard to keep dialogue moving along without turning the characters into talking heads. I'm glad it worked for you here. Thanks for reading!

This was brilliant. The code is messy for me, but I think it is my comp. I love how you played with the eyes and had so much allusion to the HP series. You characterized James beautifully. James is much less the prankster and far more real to me now.

Kelley! I hope you're getting some well-deserved rest this summer.

I'm glad you liked the story - I had a heck of time get James the way I wanted him. He's the much-loved son with plenty of faults. I wanted both the love and the faults to come through. Thanks for reading. It's always good to hear from you.
