After reading your entire story, I must say this is my favourite chapter.
I found your characterisation of Petunia spot on and particularly enjoyed the glimpses at her thought process. The attention to detail (Petunia's as well as your own) was great.
Petunia's resorting to sherry to calm herself added a humorous note to the chapter.
Last but not least, I loved the line you ended with. |

You paint a wonderful, clear picture of a woman who lies to herself even more than to the outside world. You have a rare talent to write a whole chapter about one character that is so interesting that I read it several times to find all the details. I wonder what Petunia will learn this Christmas!i |

What a grand idea! I look forward to the rest of the story -- it has much potential.

Very good start, you've got me hooked. Is Petunia really seeing ghosts or is there something else going on? And why didn't Vernon wake at the sound? I love your writing style and I look forward to more of this. It's been a while since we've seen a new story from you, so this is double exciting! |
Shannon Friday 12th December 2008 07:07 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol |
I love this concept! Great job getting into the mind of Petunia Dursley. Quite the scary place to be! I'm curious about the "save her family" part of the story description. Will that be literally, in a physical sense, or more of an emotional sense? Of course you can't answer, but I'll be reading to find out! |

I\'ve been MIA from here for so long! I logged in today and saw this and just squeed!!!!!
You\'ve done a great job depicting Petunia\'s POV...she is definitely one of my least favorite people and you have done much to continue my aversion to her! Wonderful job and I look forward to the next chapter!

shimotsuki Monday 8th December 2008 13:15 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol |
Intriguing! Petunia certainly has a lot to rethink, heh.
Nice job with the small hints about big changes or problems, like Dudley being interested in Harry's situation, and the throw-away references to Petunia's sherry and Vernon's weight.
I look forward to seeing where this is going. |

Petunia is a mystery, is 't she? For the life of me, I can't understand how she could treat her sister's child the way she did, but it's a topic that never ceases to intrigue me.
I hope you enjoy the rest. |

Lily as the Ghost of Christmas Past? This should be amusing.
You've got Petunia nailed, all right. Interesting to see what comes of this...

The Seeker Saturday 6th December 2008 17:57 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol |
Hi Melinda,
Among all the spot-on emotions you have depicted in this opening chapter, Petunia ability to delude herself stands out. Her thoughts about Harry are ones we are acquainted with, but you bring us so many more: the hussy, whom Petunia has never met, who is obviously after her brilliant boy. Vernon immediately demanding dinner two step into their entry. Lily always causing messes she had to clean up. But the most telling were the lifeless pecks on the cheek exchanged by Vernon and Petunia, and her rationalization about their lack of anything to talk about during dinner.
In addition to setting up the rest of the story, you've constructed a wonderful look into Petunia's life and the length's she goes to misinterpret it.
Marvelous job, Melinda! Looking forward to the next!
Best, Jim |
Sunday 7th December 2008 08:03 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol (Author Response) |
Aww, thanks, Jim! You know this story wouldn't be anywhere without you. I'll be sure to acknowlege that before it's out.
You know I've never cared for Petunia, and I think that woman could rationalize away just about anything. Let's see how she does with ghosts in her bedroom. |
freshwater Saturday 6th December 2008 10:30 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol |
One more note....for the Ghost of Christmas Present: Severus? and for Christmas future: Fred Weasley? I'm probably way off.....but their interactions with Pet could be fun! |

Evil cliffie....remember, Santa knows if you've been naughty or if you've been nice.
Your tongue-in-cheek statements about Petunia's POV and her motivations are very amusing....looking forward to your version of this classic tale. |

Oh yes! Clapping my hands with holiday glee! A new story from Melindalee (o)
(This is why I don't write fanfic poetry)
Actually you are creeping me out with the Petunia POV. Oh lordy that character is a piece of work and you have captured her bourgeois little mind SO well. If you will excuse me, I need to get some egg nog and await the rest of your loverly tale! |

Oh! Delicious!
What a treat to read one of your stories again. Lily is very appropriate for Christmas Past. I guess Sirius for Christmas Present and Dumbledore for what will come to pass if she doesn\'t change.
I picture Petunia finishing off the sherry bottle every other day and chewing cloves to get rid of the smell. |
Friday 5th December 2008 16:40 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol (Author Response) |
Thanks! This one is a short one, but I'm working on something longer. I'm not going to tell you the identities of the other two ghosts yet.
Lily will get her chance to speak her mind next chapter. |

Squee!!!
I've so been looking forward to this, but this first chapter is a big tease! You have Petnunia down-pat! I'm glad to see that you've carried forward Dudley's parting "kinship" towards Harry and Petunia's displeasure with it. You convey very well how boringly normal Petunia and Vernon are. I can only hope that Lily is going to give her sister what-for and look forward to the next chapter!

Excellent first chapter. I can't wait to see what comes next. I hpe the time you spent away from PS was because you were writing some original fiction. You are an amazingly talented and imaginative author and you really ought to be paid for your work.

Petunia has a \"ghost\" of a conscience. Hm! Things have to be perfect for her Dudley but he can\'t have a girl in his life!?! Sounds like Petunia is going to have a rude awakening and now Lily\'s ghost has come to make a visit. I look forward to more of this story. Thanks for writing. p |
Friday 5th December 2008 09:02 | A Potterverse Christmas Carol (Author Response) |
Petunia is in for several rude awakenings before this story is over. I've always felt Lily deserved the chance to take her sister to task for the way she treated Harry. And, no, Petunia isn't thrilled at all with the idea of Dudley's girlfriend. |

Wonderful setup, I'm really looking forward to the next part. So Lily will be the Ghost of Christmases Past? (Or whatever it's called). Wonderful way to start the day, thanks a bunch, Melinda! |
