Oh my, what a beautiful little vignette. Just perfectly sculpted - it seems like there's a new fluidity to your writing that makes it so readable and warm and alive. The opening snapshots of Harry unable to tie his shoes and Ginny being told off for flying do an excellent job setting the stage for their argument. And I really like how you weave the story together from the separate strands of each character's point of view - each transition is handled well, the story itself emerges beautifully. Finally I love love love the way you handle the characters (not that I've ever seen you mishandle Harry or Ginny or any Weasley!) - Molly is her bustling and dominating self, Ginny is the forceful vibrant girl we've always known, Harry is spot-on, and I love the way you handle quiet Albus and boisterous James. I particularly like your newest insight into Harry's character and the way it underpins this story - that however happy Harry's ending seems at the end of the DH epilogue, he still needs to do quite a bit of work to overcome the abuse and trauma of his childhood and teenage years (even if he's never terribly emo about it!). Ginny's marvelous realization that despite this history Harry has such a wonderful capacity for love really caps this story off and gives it that hopeful and fluffy end - it's what makes Harry Harry, what gives him a chance at a happy ending and what makes it possible for him to escape all the awful things that trauma might have turned him into. LOL, you make us earn our fluff, don't you? In short, this is a fantastic little story - one of the best you've done in awhile. Bravo!
Monday 19th January 2009 08:17Tied Together (Author Response)
LOL - "earned fluff" now that is a great concept. I'm glad you liked this story - it was difficult to write - not just because of the multiple points of view and the transitions, but because I didn't want it to be too "preachy." Thank goodness I have such astute readers because you have articulated just what I want to do. So thank you!

Reception, infants or Primary School would be fine - just never kindergarten. A good story - I love hearing about the family life of Harry and Ginny - wish JK had given us a taster or two.... Not sure that Harry would think Ginny was cold unless he'd never been part of their family life before though...

My first St Margarets piece! I chose a great one to start with and now I plan to read more. This was a pleasure to read. The angst was true to life but the children provided the necessary comic relief as they always do. Very well done.

I'm glad you liked it - and yes, I agree - kids can tip the emotional balance very quickly. How nice you want to read more of my stories. I've been writing HP for awhile so I have lots of stories written before HBP and DH. So be warned. Thanks for reading and for letting me know.

That was so cute! And very touching. I loved how it touched on so many aspectsof the HP story - his childhood, her childhood, their future lives together. And it was so real - it really captured the stresses of parenthood and the stresses and fears that children face. And Lilly with her green tongue and leaves growing out of her scalp! Wonderful job!
Tuesday 6th January 2009 08:06Tied Together (Author Response)
I don't think there's anything more stressful to a parent than a sick child. And from what I remember about being a kid, even though you're always learning new things - it's extra stressful when you're afraid you'll never get it. I guess I should have called this story the perfect storm of stress. Thanks for reading.

*is happy* Ahh, this is so great. Yes, they're quarrelling, yes, it's a bit angsty, but most of all it's so very real. Harry and Ginny step out of fiction and become real persons. And even through their angsty moments they love each other very much and don't hesitate to explain their actions the moment they get a bit distance.

And your smuffy dialogue is just perfect. As is the silly pun - I do love silly puns. Absolutely wonderful, as always.
Tuesday 6th January 2009 08:03Tied Together (Author Response)
*loves Berte* I'm glad you like my silly puns - they make me laugh - just like giggling children do.

Yes, it was bit of distance and perspective that they needed - as is often the case. Thanks for reading!

I love angst, and I really loved this. Watching a fight escalate between Harry and Ginny was difficult, but knowing where it came from was the most heart-wrenching aspect of the whole thing. I loved that Ginny didn't shed a tear after not sleeping and taking care of three sick children by herself; she only cried when Harry told her of his sad childhood experience. It says a lot about Ginny's character and strength; it's why Harry fell so hard for her in the first place. Wonderful story - angst and all.
Tuesday 6th January 2009 08:01Tied Together (Author Response)
I'm glad you liked it - it's probably angst-lite since I don't write it all that much - but this seemed like a topic that couldn't be anything *but* angsty when poor Harry was concerned. Yes, Ginny knows her kids are loved - but there's no way for her to mother that poor boy under Petunia's watch. I think that's how most of us readers of HP feel! Thanks for reading and your insightful review!

Like just about everything you write, St. Margarets, this is a deeply thought-out story--where so much emotion and history is literally "tied together"...which is the way it always is with parents and children and brothers and sisters, is it not? Moreover, I think your whole premise here touches upon something very truthful about the characters and their futures together which Rowling has given us; Harry and Ginny are going to have very different ideas about what growing up and parenthood entails, and those differences are going to result in conflicts and misunderstandings once the children start coming. As I imagine it, I doubt those conflicts will be particularly harsh...but they will be plenty "angsty," as you put it. Growing up never stops, does it?

Anyway, once again, thanks for using our favorite world to send us all a fine story.
Monday 5th January 2009 08:43Tied Together (Author Response)
No, growing up never stops and neither do the suprises - especially when you're a parent. I'm a lucky fan fic. author in that JKR has already provided rich backstories for her characters. Thanks for reading!

Excellent. I love this.

I cannot believe how Petunia could be so blatantly cruel... all because of jealousy. She took this emotion out on a child. Completely and utterly unacceptable behaviour.
Sunday 4th January 2009 17:56Tied Together (Author Response)
Oh, I know. I try not to think about Petunia and the kinds of things little Harry would have missed out on - like stories at bedtime and someone to soothe him when he was sick. *sigh*

I don't think I ever read your Harry and Ginny argue, but you certainly described them perfectly in this fic. You made them appear exactly like real people while they're still the real Harry and Ginny.
Sunday 4th January 2009 17:54Tied Together (Author Response)
I don't like arguments in real life so I typically avoid them when I write. That being said, I think H/G would have a few arguments along the way and those arguments would be about something nearest and dearest to their hearts - in this case, their children. Those are the arguments worth having, imo. And thank you for the compliment - I'm glad they seemed in character. Thanks for reading!

So sweet - and yes, a bit angsty, but you did not leave us there. I don't mind some angst if I get to the good stuff at the end! Your writing is, as always, so perceptive - you really understand your characters. What a pleasure to read something so well written!

What a joy to read one of your stories! It was beautiful and very true to life about having your child ill and cranky. Poor Ginny and poor Harry having to work everything out.

I particularly loved this passage-

James seemed particularly struck by the fact that leaves had sprouted from her scalp. “So Lily was turning into a tree.”

“I was not a tree!” Lily said with dignity. Since she didn’t whine and kept eating after this insult, Albus knew she was better.

“How would you know?” James said. “Gran just said you were sleeping like a log.” Then he giggled at his own joke. “Get it — trees sleep like logs?”

It was a silly joke, but James had the kind of giggle that made bubbles in your chest. It was impossible not to laugh when James giggled like that. Gran, Grandpa — even Lily laughed.

Oh, you didn't have to review again! I'm glad you liked the silly kid joke - I do like it when kids have a fit of the giggles. It's impossible not to laugh, too. *hugs*

A nice story! As usually, I was sorry for little Harry: 10 years with the Dursleys, poor kid!
But what about Ginny's first flying? It's the only part that doesn't fit in the story for me.
The Harry-Ginny row was well-written and I liked the scenes with Albus and James: their soundless quarelling and their nights together.
Good job with Lily's illness, nice idea.
And thanks for the little bathroom treat! :-)
Now, first thing in the morning, I'm going to check if my 5-year-old godson needs any help learning to tie his shoelaces. :-)
PS: Has this story been in any way inspired by the rumours of Dan Radcliff having troubles with shoelaces? :-)
Sunday 4th January 2009 15:47Tied Together (Author Response)
The original challenge of "shoelace" was inspired by that story of Bonnie Wright tying Dan's shoelaces. You have a good memory since that was last summer when we thought we would have the movie for Christmas. Thanks for reading!
