It hurt too much.
They were kissing fiercely; he didn’t know how he was going to survive the next year. At least she had school to distract her. But him… what was he going to do?
“I should go,” she murmured.
“No,” he kissed her again, desperate.
“You’ll see me at Christmas, before, if we get organised. We can meet up in Hogsmeade.”
He ignored her, just put his lips to hers again.
Suddenly there was a noise like something being strangled and she withdrew sharply. Disappointed, and angry by the interruption, he too, looked down.
A small twelve-year-old with untidy dark red hair and brown eyes was staring up at them through his overlong fringe, looking thoroughly disgusted.
“What are you doing, Teddy?”
“I’ve come to see Victoire off,” Teddy replied, looking fondly back at the black haired beauty. “Now go away.”
But James glared at him, his sparkly brown eyes full of betrayal.
“Bu—”
“James,” said Teddy through gritted teeth. “I said, go away!”
Something else seemed to dawn on the young boy for his face brightened somewhat and he turned and bounded away through the crowds.
“Oh, God,” she rested her head on his shoulder. “He’s gone to tell them all, hasn’t he?”
“Hey, don’t worry about it,” he paused. “They already know.”
“What?”
“Harry guessed.”
“So why didn’t you tell me?”
“I liked the secrecy.” He gave her a rueful grin. “It was fun — exciting.”
“Oh, Teddy,” and then she was kissing him, her hands in his blue hair, her eyes closed in peaceful pleasure.
A whistle sounded.
“I’ve got to go, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be — I’ll see you soon.”
After one last lingering look, she hurried away towards the train door.
Then came rushing back.
She seized his jacket, kissed him one last time and ran back to the train.
He saw Bill and Fleur hurry forwards and chivvy Dominique on to the train.
They kissed and hugged their daughters, then fell back, Bill’s arm around Fleur, baby Louis wrapped in her arms.
He saw his chance. He ran forwards. Victoire leaned out. The train began to move.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too,” and she gave him her beautiful smile and waved as the train pulled away.
He turned away before it rounded the corner, blinking away tears, to see Bill and Fleur watching him, a sure smile of approval on both their faces.
“Half term isn’t far away,” Bill said in a low voice as Teddy passed. Fleur beamed.
Maybe it wasn’t going to be too bad, after all.
