oh my god I am bawling my eyes out. To hear about Harry Potter being reduced to a shell of his former self, and that Dumbledore caused it all. You truly are a master of writing |

I just... Wow... I'm a guy, and as you know the stereotypical "guys don't cry" thing has been a stigma on me since I've grown up. This story though... Is something that can make me open up and feel emotionally distressed... I think you drove your point home with this story... As much as "This Means War!" brings happiness and joy to me, this story really crushed a lot of my hopes and dreams... I've read a lot of fan fiction regarding a happy life for Harry and Ginny (although rather bittersweet ends of life), but I have not read something where their life is so abruptly taken away...
Don't take this as harsh criticism or any form of bashing though... As defeated as I feel after reading this, I can only admit one thing after reading all your stories posted so far: You are an amazing writer.
Thank you for making your works public. I have enjoyed reading your masterpieces. |

Omg! Dumbledore the bad guy - who would have thought? It was a very well-written story, and extremely sad. Nice job! |

disturbing but very well written. Maybe the most thought provoking short story I ever read. |

Good work! I always thought that Dumbledore sacrificed a bit too much for the sake of the greater good. Thanks for story, hope you keep writing more. |

My god... I've read some good fan-fiction in my time, but this was truly exquisite. Although, to be honest, I don't like what you did with Dumbledore. You let him off FAR TOO EASILY. But, this was a truly amazing piece of work.
Thank you for sharing it with us. |
pyromain Saturday 30th June 2007 05:43 | The Abyss |
the story was really dark, I can't say I really liked it but have to say that it was good to read it. Another grave misstake by dumbeldore. |
DanAngelus Wednesday 2nd May 2007 14:40 | The Abyss |
This is a really good short story. Well written. You captured the "emotion" (or lack thereof) of it all really well. This is the second of your short stories ive read and I really like them both. Well done. |

OMG! This was so sad! *Sniff*
Man, you're a great writer but really...
How could you make a story so SAD?!
... When I first read it, (I read it like, over and over again)
it was kinda hard to understand what was happening cuz of
all of your other "happy" stories.
But, as I kept on reading, I had a horrible feeling as I
dove further through the story.
You have a very wonderful talent at writing stories,
and maybe you can become a real author one day!

ridgeback77 Wednesday 31st August 2005 20:23 | The Abyss |
That was great. I'm sorry that both Harry and Ginny both died, too Romeo & Juliet-ish
for me personally, but a great story nonetheless. I did have a
huge grin on my face when Harry ended the Malfoy line though.

BasketKiwi Monday 1st August 2005 19:04 | The Abyss |
Wow. Once again, wow. That was really good. It was horribly sad, but really good. Aw. Poor Harry. That part was evil. Actually, the whole thing was evil, except when Ginny and Harry get to be together again! Very, very good job! Yes, you certainly do know how to write a short story, and as far as I can tell, you certainly do remember how to write angst. |
malko050987 Saturday 9th July 2005 02:46 | The Abyss |
It's a sad story, yes, but it has a happy ending. Well, most people would argue with me on the "Happy ending" bit, but it's true. For me, a happy end of a HP fanfic, is when Harry gets Ginny and they live hapily ever after.
You gave me that. Thank you. |
Astrid Friday 18th March 2005 15:30 | The Abyss |
Oh, it's so sad. You made me cry again. |

Believe me you know how to write angst...or i wouldnt have these tears on my cheeks now |
Blue Yeti Saturday 29th January 2005 18:02 | The Abyss |
*denies the tears*
*is unsuccessful in this*
God, the clincher wasn't Dumbledore's calousness, though that was brilliant, it was Ginny spreading Harry... I got shivers up and down my spine. Far, far too few authors look at Harry's time at the Dursleys as child abuse, so whenever I see it mentioned as something which will make everyone else *understand* him better... goosebumbs. This was brilliant.
And you've now given me motivation to go back to a story I last touched in 2002, which used the same quote from Nietzsche. Thanks for that and for the brilliant read.
|
the toaster Wednesday 12th January 2005 08:07 | The Abyss |
Ok, ok, let me get this straight. You take a story about a little boy who goes of to wizard school and has happy adventures and turn it into... into... this? How could you? *sobs*
That was very angsty. Almost too much so. *blows nose loudly on old shirt* |
rdprice29 Sunday 19th December 2004 16:21 | The Abyss |
I would say that you still have a mastery over angst. This is one of the saddest things I've read in fanfiction! |
Lady Bashful Saturday 11th December 2004 10:11 | The Abyss |
*sobs*
I don't know whether to be happy that Harry and Ginny are together in paridise or devestated that Harry died like he did... so sad...
*wipes away tear*
But a side from that, you have skills man! Like properly. You could write any style and make it good!
*is impressed*
Thank you

“The Abyss” has a Shakespearean feel to it. Harry and Ginny both taking the “poison” at the end, and their brilliant soliloquies are a fun metaphor.
Thanks for posting this, and I look forward to reading other fics of yours.

Well, wow. I'm reading this story for the first time as I'm trying to decide who to vote for in whatever category this is in. I don't know why I didn't read it during the original posting, but it's one powerful piece. I wouldn't call it angst so much as a tragedy. Absolutley brilliant! (And I did vote for it!)

phew!! what a read!!
A really bittersweet thing, reminded me a bit of frodo's path in LOTR actually, the wounds donot heal!!!
the last sentence was the icing on this cake of angst.

This story simply proves that though I am with everyone here agreeing that you can write humour better then any author out there, you can WRITE with the best of them. Amazing diversity and incredibly well done. |
pixiellie Saturday 21st August 2004 00:11 | The Abyss |
Dear Tim,
On your advice, I read this as my next fiction. It definitely hit a true emotional note. A stark, clear piece of writing. A different style from TMW, I enjoyed the simple sentence structure. A chilling moment for me was the breakup scene from Harry's point of view. That DD could be a part of such a violation, and you had his eyes still twinkling. Cast him as more devious than I could imagine. Nice touch.
I hate the thought of Harry solely as weapon. That his life had been orchestrated from the beginning to hold pain and lonliness. Conditioned not to care if he lives, dies or kills.
I appreciate the idea of Ginny fighting to make such a death 'right'. Her gryff honor would demand it. DD will never be seen as a hero in the wizarding world again.
I love that even in your angst you give me a moment of fluff- Harry and Ginny embrace, and she purrs to feel him. Bittersweet.
My concern in this story would be Ginny under the imperious. That her family, friends (Hermione) and teachers didn't realize something was wrong. I do like that you drew similarities between Tom's possession and DD's curse.
On a lighter note, this is the second in as many stories of your's that has had Ginny punching someone. Am I detecting a theme?
Ultimately, I found it depressing, but in a story of war and death, even victors lose. A pretty good lesson. (And you did warn me it was a tearjerker.)
Thanks for posting such a well written piece. Time spent reading your work is always worth it. Hugs to your betsas, Jaq, Allie, and John.
Can't wait to start the next story.

Wow. This had me almost in tears. It was sad. Very sad. But i loved it. |
saugart Monday 2nd August 2004 12:23 | The Abyss |
This is a powerful story. I fully understand Ginny's choice for revenge. I wonder what choice I would have made, had I been in Dumbledore's shoes.
I, too, was originally brought to your writing by "This Means War!".
Kudos to your betas, Jaq, Allie, and John, for helping with the sentence structure and spelling. |
hermionegreen Sunday 25th July 2004 22:22 | The Abyss |
This was very well written. Although you do a much better job at humor and fluff. It just goes to show you how talented you are... to be able to write something so sad, and still be able to pull it off.

I re-read this in an effort to lull my mind back to sleep, but ended up all emotional again. Ack!
Here's a clip from my first review on the old boards:
The only thing worse than staring into the abyss is reading too much Nietzsche. But I have to admit that it did the trick to helping you write angst!
While I don't care for first person perspective, it didn't detract as much from this story. The emotions were clear, powerful, and almost a character unto themselves. It think a tear or two escaped my eyes as well.
Otherwise, it was wonderfully written and a perfect counterpiece to TMW. |
Phoenix Rising Tuesday 15th June 2004 18:20 | The Abyss |
I'm not sure what it is about good angst but when well written it leaves a lasting impression on th reader. This was an astounding piece of work and one things for sure; you defenitely have'nt forgotten how to wite angst, it was brilliant.
I hope to read your other stories as soon as i get the time. Keep up the good work! |
Dice Monday 7th June 2004 22:21 | The Abyss |
Don't worry. You remember angst all right. |
DailyProphetReporting Sunday 6th June 2004 06:05 | The Abyss |
Tim,
I'm left rather speechless by this. This is so stark and terrible. And shockingly real.
You portray a side of Harry that we all know is there -- depressed and lonely, but self-reliant and strong -- very well. With his background and how he acts in OotP I think that it wouldn't take too much to make him single-minded. You illustrate that with fearsome clearity here.
But, of course, this story is at least as much about Dumbledore as it is about Harry. We've seen his values in canon but we've also seen he has flaws. Here, you've very starkly illustrated how narrow that barrier could be. And you've asked what the meaning of idealism is in relation to the common good.
The greatest thing about this story is that there isn't an easy answer. Brilliantly done.
