Sacred to the Memory
Very harsh, yet slightly sweet little chapter.

“Happy Birthday, Lily,” she said, glowering at the headstone.
Dudley awoke with a start and began to howl, which set Harry off.
“Diddy Duddykins, don’t cry,” cooed Petunia, fishing in her bag for some sweets to pacify her son.
“Stop crying, you horrible child!” she snarled at Harry.
Walking quickly out of the churchyard, she didn’t turn to look back.

Ouch

That memory was adorable, but the “Lily’s got three more presents than I did.” part was like, ouch.
But I think it's a really good way to have had Lily use magic. Having her vanish a bit of unwanted food. Very sweet, very smart.

And I'm glad that Petunia at least went to the grave.

I'm glad that Petunia went as well. Petunia isn't, but there we are.

I really liked writing the flashback scenes in this story, especially the Petunia one as a little girl because you can almost feel sorry for her. And I reckon that Dudley got his present-counting habit from at least one of his parents and it was fun to go with Petunia.

This is a marvelous depiction of Petunia. It was very sympathetic without actually making me like her, i.e. I can understand her a little better, but she's still a poor, bitter soul who is not at all likeable. I love this line:

Public transport was so, well, public. Just about anyone could walk into your carriage and sit near you.

Gosh, that's just perfect for Petunia.

This was excellent work! Petunia was totally in character, and her thoughts were very realistic.
