Very nice story! Loved the Harry/Ginny tension even to the end. It would be nice to see this followed up as it has many interesting possibilities left for a great Sequel!

nice story. It is a change to read a story by an american who has managed to make his work plausibly british. most of the time you were really good at it.

It was also nice for a change to read about a seperate culture of wizards which doesn't completely pwn the english one, and I actually enjoyed some of the ideas.

I didnt think much of the religious aspect towards the end - it is never mentioned once by JK, and Harry always has struck me as the kind of chap who is way too disilusioned with the world to be able to beleive in an all loving god.

none the less, a good story
Monday 13th October 2008 17:52The Letters of Summer (Author Response)
Thanks, I had a lot of help along the way with Brit picking, and had a few heated exchanges to prove (or disprove) allegations of what did and did not work.

Twiddling with the culture was a lot of fun.

As to religion - it's there in JKR's canon, you just have to look for it. There are baptismal sponsors (godfathers), celebrations of Christmas and Easter, a fellow who's said to "look like a Vicar" and bland little fellows who preside over funerals. It's not to everyone's taste, I know, but it's my story, if you don't care for it, there are hundreds of thousands more that may suite you.

My other writing is archived at www.fanficauthors.net - you might care for some of it - or not.

Thanks for reading.

Wow,

this was a rather good story. I deffinitely liked it. Eventhough it had one glitch which cought my eye and it had a bit disturbing effect. You have placed Abelard somwhere in south Africa and his, for the lack of better word in my vocabulary, housemade has a Hungarian name. Whatever, the fact would not be as disturbing, would the name be something different than a name of a Hungarian dish. Parikash... how did you get that idea??? I think you could have done better with a simple name as Kovacs, Janos or such (I do not know that many, as I am not Hungarian but Slovak), however google would do... Overall, as I said in the begining, I liked it a lot...

One of the best story's I have read so far. To say it in other words I start reading the story yesterday when I came back from work and have now finished reading it after coming back from work jet again, as a result I didn't sleep this night because I was reading (LOL). The story was beautifull written and the idea of snow dragons and there bonding it perfect.
Thanks very much for writing this story I trully enjoyed it.

Oh my God this is one of the best stories on this site! You truly know how to write an amazing story; I was hooked the whole time and I wasn't even upset that they never really kissed during the whole story! (which is saying something, since I usually require a kiss for a decent fanfic). This is such a bloody brilliant story, I love Abelard and Jasmine, and I also think that you write Remus/Tonks, Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny beautifully! I also loved everything about the dragons and the whole concept of a Krulach; who better to be dragons than Harry and Ginny? lol Amazing, well done!

The Letters of Summer

Wow. I finally got around to reading this last chapter--how many months has it been since you posted it, and I just never got to it.

Anyhow, it's brilliant, of course, and I look forward to that Epilogue. You say there will be no sixth-year fic, but I hope you mean it the way you meant there would be no post-HBP fics. I want to see how you meant for things to go in the TLOS universe. All the way to the final encounter, as it were.

I could use my dictionary or an encyclopedia,to find enough words to describe this fic. Suffice to say it is one of the very ,very best I have had the pleasure to read,My only lament is that it took so much out of you, that there is not a sequel. God Bless you,and thank-you .
Saturday 23rd July 2005 22:27The Letters of Summer (Author Response)
I lied.

Look under my author profile on this archive - you'll find two more stories set in the TLOS universe - Kisses (a stand-alone) and Stories from Sixth Year.

I'm also writing a Last Battle story which will probably be archived on PS.net, and a HP at 45 story (Ever After) which most likely will not be archived here, notwithstanding the fact that it starts out H/G and is in the TLOS universe.

I'm glad you got some good reading pleasure out of my small story.  Thanks for taking the time to review.

The Letters of Summer
I think I'll throw this one into the "love the story, but I wish you wouldn't talk about God - at all" pile.

Far from me to tell you what you should or not do with your story and, for that matter, with my review . I am glad that you answered and surprised that you did so quickly and I hope you don't mind if I elaborate my review, since I see I was not clear enough and got misunderstood.

Some people say that JKR wrote secular stories and we who write fan-fiction should respect  that and never mention religion.  This principle seems to not be observed, however, by those who put bushels of sex into their stories when JKR has none in hers.

Don't count myself amount those. One of the thrills of fanfic is offering fans new elements, points of view, characters, plot lines... Including religion is perfectly legitimate IMO. I have read some of the sex stories and most of them are not fanfic, but regular erotica with characters that are named Harry, Ron, etc. I am not a canon zealot; as a reader, I am pleased when any foreign element is inserted in a fluent and consistent way, whatever this element is. For instance, in After the End I found the romance/mild sex/angst well done, but Eloise Midget!nice reporter was way over the top, as suspension of belief is concerned.

Religion, like sex,  is a part of life.  Religion _is_ part of the JKR world.  There's observances of Christmas and Easter, Christmas Carols (and mangled versions thereof), Harry has a Godfather (baptismal sponsor) and in one of the earlier works, a character is said to "look like a vicar" when he was dressed in black.

Indeed, like other elements as romance, war, sports... You chose to enhance the religion role in your universe, and that is fine with me. What I found awkward is how you did it. For instance, in your story Ginny seems not familiar with catholic rituals when she attends a service and reflects largely on details like how the cross sign is performed or when to kneel, but pays little (if any) attention to why Remus (a werewolf, no less) or Harry are there, or what a service is about.

If you come to my house you'll find grace at meals.  Drop by on Saturday and you'll hear us talking about our Sunday schedule, including Sunday services and preparing for teaching Sunday school.  Unless you ask, I very much doubt that we'd elaborate on the meaing behind any of it.  I can tell you why I believe in every word of the Creed (either one - Apostles' or Nicene) but it usually doesn't come up in table conversation.
That is too personal for me to make any comment. However, literarily speaking, your characters not only talk at the table. They reflect inwardly, write nice letters and have in depth one-on-one conversations.

If the mentions of religion in TLOS make you uncomfortable, by all means don't read Stories from Sixth Year.  After all, I wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable, would I?

No, I am sure you wouldn't. Thanks for that. I also don't want you to feel uncomfortable too. I have to learn to review better or limit myself to a polite "thank you". There are a lot of nice things in your story that make me look forward to read the rest of your production. Shortly and not solely: letters, passbox, dragons, Laurel & Moey... There are other things I didn't like, but I am not sure it makes sense to mention them here if I am not ready to take the effort to elaborate on why.

If you can't find in yourself to pick up my review and throw it on the purely literary pile, please consider it taken back and accept my apoligies. I really meant that you seemed to make a significant point of including catholicism in your story and I don't think the _way_ you did it was literarily satisfying.

Thanks for reviewing.

My pleasure. Thanks for answering.

BTW i am intrigued, what was it going on between Moey (nice wink to AtE) and McGonagall? I didn't get the tuna can scene.

1.   I see I was not clear enough and got misunderstood.

5.  BTW i am intrigued, what was it going on between Moey (nice wink to AtE) and McGonagall? I didn't get the tuna can scene.

1.  Okay, some replies - I don't think I misunderstood your review at all and stand by my earlier characterization.

2.  In my visualization of the Wizarding world, some people are believers, some are not.  The Weasley family haven't been churchgoers for several generations, hence Ginny's lack of familiarity with a C of E service, but it's not so odd that she finds _going_ to church as being beyond the pale - it's just not part of her family traditions.  She understands what the service is about - but that's commented on in Stories from Sixth Year when she writes about it at length in her diary.  In an upcoming chapter, she'll be baptized at the Chapel in Hooper.  Don't read it - you probably won't find it to be literarily satisfying.

3.  Religion is a part of life,  but it's not a turning point in this story.  It's not my goal to convert my readers to my flavour of Christianity (although that would be a fine, if unintended, outcome) but it is a part of the story.  The characters talked about it, but apparently for your tastes they talked about it too much because you noticed it, but not enough,  because they didn't have lengthy discourses on the hypostatic union (how Christ can be both fully divine and fully human).  Hmmmmm.

4.  It wasn't literarily satisfying for you - ah well.  As I can't make heads or tails of your objections, I'll keep it in the present pile.

5.  That's a bit of backstory.  Moey in AtE was a two-eyed Quidditch star.  The real Moey is a Beta at SugarQuill who happens to have one functioning eye.  When OotP mentioned a one-eyed Auror, Moey claimed that she'd been written into the story.  I took that and ran with it.  As to the tuna, McGonagall hates tuna in her human form, but finds it irresistable in her Animagus form (naturally).  There were a lot of running jokes about tuna when Moey was a student of McG, hence the Moey-provided can of tuna.  I've lots and lots of backstory that never makes it into the main story, such as how Sirius Black became a believer, why Remus Lupin was mad at God until after the death of James and Lily, etc.

Nice story. Thanks for sharing. Impressive amount of work. Loved Ginny's diary.

To my taste the religious touch is very strange to this fiction universe and somehow hinders the story but, hey, it is your show, no complains! It is curious, nonetheless, how some catholic people see magic as inherently evil and are apalled at the success of HP among children while you try to harmonize both magic and catholicism. I don't think you succeeded, since you insert the ritual anecdotic traits (table blessing, mass, confession, etc.) but don't elaborate on the meaning behind and the overall result is awkward, in my opinion (that is what reviews are for, isn't it?).

Thanks away for the good time.

I do not recall wrighting a review for TLOS in this I am remiss in not doing so. I'am not a big fan of none cannon charcaters. But Abelard and Jasmine are two of the best in fan fic. With CTS's Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel and Jeconais Aberforth Dumdledore it dose not get any better. The fun of Jasmine and the wisdom of Abelard make the story such a  joy to read that I can not give anought prase. Both  Harry and Ginny are the kind of kids I would like to have know at their age. You have wrighting a great story and I hope you keep up with the Stories of Sixth Year, and a posable story for SOSY Harry reading the book Jasmine gave him Clue for the Clueless would be fun    Thanks

I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed this story.  I loved the way you incorporated faith into it without seeming intrusive, your characterizations of canon and non-canon characters was spot on and the plot was a interesting twist to the wonderful Harry/Ginny romance common within fanfic.  So congratulations on a job well done!

The Letters of Summer

Wow. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed reading this story--well, rather large novel, really lol. You are a fantastic writer. However, it did have one problem --and to me it's a big one as I found it quite distracting throughout the story-- the characters are well, very out of character, IMO. It is glaringly obvious that you are American, for one thing...and the people in the group just don't speak the way they do in the books. I think if you were to have some very reliable Brits to preview your work before posting they could help you correct some of the problems. If it hadn't been for this one distraction, I'd have to say without a doubt that this is one of the best HP fan fics I've ever read (and I've read a lot). It _certainly_ would be on a par with After the End, which you've said how much you enjoyed.

I wish you the best of luck with your writing and want to encourage you to KEEP IT UP. Obviously you are good, or a picky reader like me wouldn't have spent the time reading this whole story even with the distraction I mentioned. Usually when that happens I quit the story right away but I could tell right away you had promise. :) Thanks so much for sharing your story with the world!

Wow. That was some story. I would contradict quite a few of the details (I don't hold much with prophecies and bindings, I could have done without some of the household details, the hesitation to kiss is a bit strange to me etc.), but you're the author, so it's all at your pleasure. You have created quite an original AND coherent version of the HP universe. I was very impressed with the way things fall into place and fit into each other - it works according to the rules you have set up, and I think the construction in itself is more believable than OotP. Considering the size of the enterprise, that's something in itself, PLUS you've finished it! So, congratulations.

I really hope there is a sequel to this...its fantastic!! I love the  thing, very original!! the little intermission chapters were good too, and I was disappointed, like , that she and  didn't get to "snog", but, once getting to the end, I can understand better the reasons you had for it. This was better than some sloppy first kiss...I hope this either continues or that there is a second story to it...please don't wait for JKR to  put out her new book, keep going with this story line!!

Ok, end of story not withstanding, I look forward to the epilogue and any futher adventures (in this particular version of their universe or new ones ) that you care to contribute.  I have enjoyed this story from the get-go and it simply "cries"  for a sequel.  You just can't leave Harry and Gin' hanging with with all of these powers emerging and end it there ( unless you're planning on a post Hogwarts epilogue ).  Whatever you decide I look forward to more of your writing in the future.  Great work!

listen to your heart. If that fails, listen to the dragon whispering in your ear.

I really liked that line.

"Now see here, young man, you'll not talk to your father in that tone of voice," Molly started, before covering her mouth with her hand. "Ooops," she said, sheepishly.

"The correction was spot on, even if the relationship was a bit off," Harry replied. "I'm sorry, Dad," he said with a wink.

Sigh.  He really is a Weasley, just an adopted one!  I just wish he would see that in canon!

The Letters of Summer

John,

Seeing as how this is the last chapter and the climax of the story had passed before we even got here, I won't waste too much time analyzing other than to say you really wrapped things up well. Despite the fact there is so much unresolved, there is a significant sense of closure here with the original characters' exits and Harry and Ginny riding off to discover just what all they've been through is going to mean. And it's great that there's no clear answer. You deserve a lot of credit to sticking to your (sort of) pre-H/G mantle all the way through this, though I dare say that 'understanding' you mentioned way back took on a bit more significance than I expected at the time.

Beyond that, I just want to say thank you. With the length and complexity of the story, I can only imagine just how much thought and toil you must have put in to give us this. It's a shame our thanks are all the reward you get for this, but you've definitely earned them. This is the most creative, yet believable, twist on canon I've had the pleasure of reading.

I didn't write it for the reviews, believe me.  They have been nice - there is a certain rush to firing up the old computer in the morning and finding a stack of a dozen or so messages waiting.

I've enjoyed meeting new people (mainly through e-mail) collaborating on other fics, improving my writing, experimenting on new types of writing.

Thanks for your kind words - you haven't seen the last of me yet.

This was just an excellent, excellent story!   It is definitely one of my favorites, and I think you avoided a howler from "Ginny" (re: your outtakes and the howler sent in the outtake from AtE) with the ending.

And, for the record, I don't think you write like a woman...I think you write like JKR, and that is the highest praise I can give.

Great story Kokopelli.  Very nicely written and the attention to detail in the entire fic was great.  Very high quality writing.  Unfortunate that you won't be continuing the story, but understandable.  The effort that you must have put into the story and that too without any other rewards other than reviews, is exceedingly admirable.

I look forward to reading the epilogue and any other stories you may write.
Saturday 8th January 2005 07:25The Letters of Summer (Author Response)
To clarify - I will be continuing the story - what I won't be doing is writing a 800,000 word story about what happens in the entirety of 6th year.  One of my more ardent fans wanted me to write a chapter for each day in the summer of 1996, which would give me about 75 chapters - uh - not what _I_ had in mind.

You haven't seen the last of the TLOS universe, but this is the big enchillada - for now at least.

You think _you're_ let down - I finished this before Christmas and while I spent time home with my family this little voice kept saying in the back of my head - "you need to be writing" to which I replied "but it's done now - I'm on holiday!"

Thus I wrote "Kisses" before I wrote the proper epilogue.

Wow.  I have to say that this story has been amazing.  The marking, the bonding, the very involved storyline.  Not to mention some dragon action.

I'd like to give a more detailed review, but words fail me.  Your writing is just so good and so descriptive, there doesn't seem to be anything else to say.

Completely Unrelated:  Oh, my gosh, you know Larry Norman!  No one knows Larry Norman!  Some of my best childhood memories are of listening to my parents' Larry Norman and Barry McGuire records.

The Letters of Summer
Ahhh... Bliss.  I feel very contented, relaxed and.... - happy.  This Harry is going to live his life, The Servant of Light will destroy the Dark before he lives happily ever after with his krulach.

Just to pick one thing: Finally Draco got what he deserved.  Apart from that I'm too blissed out to be able to think clearly.

Thank you so much.

*claps like a maniac*  Great finish, still dissappointed that there was no real kiss but I know that we've been told (and me specifacally once I believe) that it wasn't gonna happen.  I really liked this story and I'm about to go read the "Kisses: Stories from the TLOS Universe" thingy that appeared with this.  I can't wait untill you write something more and I'm patiently waiting for it *sits down*.

Congrats on the great story!

The dialouge in the story is great.  It's easily readable and for the past few months, it has accompanied me on long trips as to not wear my laptop battery out.  I also love the sense of humor you instill in the characters.  I would love to read a Ginny-Jasmine outtake, maybe during Ginny's extended training.  Well, I'd like to see Jasmine in anything, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, thank you for all of your hard work in this story.

The Letters of Summer as concluded but with a perfect mix of humor, drama and angst.  I've enjoyed this from the beginning and i am sorry to see it go.

I am both sad and delighted with this last chapter.  Sad that it's the last, but delighted with the way that you ended your story.  This is a remarkable story set at the intersection of faith, hope, and love.  I have enjoyed it from the first reading.  I think you really brought all the characters to life.  I especially enjoyed your characterization of Hermione and Monica.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us.  I already know that I'll be reading it again, probably more than once.

I really, really enjoyed writing the Hermione portions of this story - who knows, maybe I'll write some short stuff that's Hermione-centric.

The story does stand re-reading.  I've had to go back and re-read myself because it's been so long since I started!

The Letters of Summer

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under Heaven.

I'm not sure how I feel about this story being ended - on the one hand, I will be extremely sorry not to see updates for it. On the other, you have ended it as well as you began and wrote it, which is extremely well indeed.

In my opinion, you have one of the finest if not THE finest story on this site here.

I thank you for sharing this with us, and I look forward to seeing your epilogue.

Well done, Kokopelli, and thank you.

Well Done and Congratulations! Thank you for dedicating the time and effort to share such a fantastic story.  I really enjoyed reading your story. I thought the dragon interplay was both funny and thoughtful - not an easy trick to pull off. I love where Harry and Ginny stand at the end of your story with their "understanding" (still giggling at your interludes - very clever that). I hope you enjoy a much deserved hiatus and I look forward to reading your work in the future.

This has been the most wonderful story!  So detailed it was amazing to read each chapter.

The dragon bonding was lovely.

Thank you so much for doing this.  Enjoy all of the free time that you will have now.  I will always look for your new works...
