huh... interesting story... that would be really confusing though... having major gaps in peoples memories and stuff... yikes... i dont think that would be very plausible...

well... that was interesting... although i personally dont think that that was a very smart idea...

Wow, that's an amazing idea. So unique, excellent one-shot. |

Probably the most interesting idea of getting rid of Voldie I've read. I like it! |

Fun story! |

Fascinating/clever idea! Bit of an anti-climax to have Tom walk into the lorry (I thought you were going to do a classic and have him run over by a bus) but I suppose you couldn't have him walking around the muggle world for too long. Also a bit of a stretch that both his immortality and the horcruxes depended on memory to function. But what the hey, it was a deuced clever intriguing idea and a good short story, thank you!

You're welcome. I admit that the effects of the Fidelius/Memory Charm are a bit arbitary in nature, but it seemed reasonable that if everyone, including the git himself, forgot who Lord Thingy was, then magical rituals performed on him could lose their power. Many depictions of that sort of thing have the subject's name as an inherent part of the magic -- so what happens when no-one knows that name any more?
Similarly, the bits of soul contained in the Hor-y Plot Devices are going to lose something if they can't remember who they are part of, so it's not much of a stretch to say that they lose their coherence and the soul fragment wafts away to pass onto the "next great adventure."
You can argue this six ways to Doomsday and never reach a conclusion; for story purposes, I felt that what I had happen was at least plausible, and wasn't that important except to ensure that Tommy-boy was dead. |
Delfino Wednesday 28th September 2005 14:50 | Lord Who? |
Loved it! Although, I prefer the thought that Harry will actually physically defeat Voldemort and that the new Tom might re-develp his evil self....But it really is good! I love that only Harry will remember him, although that may cause some confusion about his lifeline, don't you think?
Either way, great job!!

Oh, there's going to be a lot of confusion, but Harry only has to act as confused as the rest of them and no-one will ask him unwanted questions. He may be the Boy-Who-Lived, but no-one can remember the full details of what that means... |
sonicdale Tuesday 27th September 2005 20:51 | Lord Who? |
Very nice.
Clean, to the point, and very well written.
I liked it alot.
I'm a fan of SOB - you caught Bob and Alyx's voice well. Kudos for that.
And I'm glad you worked so much into such a short fic. I'm convinced that short oneshots are harder to write.
Good work.

Points for creativity, certainly. Though Harry will have to think up a logical explanation for that distinctive scar. |
Aaran St Vines Sunday 25th September 2005 07:54 | Lord Who? |
Phil,
This is a brilliant piece of deux ex machina - a perfectly acceptable example.
You've added your typical concise ability to explain complex ideas in short bursts of logic to a one shot moment that would logically end the entire Boy-Who-Lived saga in a matter of moments.
And of course, Harry remains the one to have to carry the burden of the world, not on his shoulders, but in his mind, for all of his days.
Fascinating! |
Kala Phoenix Saturday 24th September 2005 22:47 | Lord Who? |
Over all this was a very interesting idea, but I'm wondering why everyone would forget about Voldemort even if he did totally forget himself and get run over by a lorry truck. The run-on sentences kind of bugged me, but that's just my editor-self taking over. This idea is a good start, though, for a theory of how Harry could destroy Voldemort! |
Wolf's Scream Saturday 24th September 2005 09:49 | Lord Who? |
Heh; well done -- interesting concept. Reminds me of the fate of
some of the Toons in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" I wonder if that
lorry hadn't been by just then (or if its driver had been more careful
or skillful), might Tom Riddle have actually become a productive member
of society? I rather doubt it, myself, but....

I wouldn't have thought so; by the time he's come up with the name "Voldemort," he's pretty much set into the Muggle-hating, immortality-seeking destructive mind-set, and I doubt that anything would get him out of it. |
Allie Kiwi Friday 23rd September 2005 17:55 | Lord Who? |
Addendum:
My thoughts about what happens after this story, are that Hermione takes off straight to the library full of her usual insatiable curiosity, approaches Harry with the 'evidence', followed by a few words of which Mrs Weasley would not approve, and thus the search for Horcruxes is replaced by a search and destroy mission of all written matter dealing with the subject. *grin* Imagine Hermione's thoughts on having to destroy books! Of course, she could come up with a spell something along the lines of Jasper Fforde's idea where if you change omething in the original manuscript, all other copies of the edition change accordingly to match.
Hmmm, I think I'll go and ponder this... |
Allie Kiwi Friday 23rd September 2005 17:48 | Lord Who? |
I love this story - a wonderfully witty way of how Harry no-doubt wishes the problem of Lord Thingy could be dealt with, with no bloodshed. and not only is there no bloodshed, but Harry gets to be fairly anonymous, which is something he's wanted for years. Bravo!
I'd give my eye-teeth to see how people dealt with the weirdos in capes and masks: a swift trip to St Mungos, no doubt. |
Jake Friday 23rd September 2005 14:13 | Lord Who? |
This was great! I love Sunset over Britain and this clever way of vanquishing the dark lord was wonderful!

You say you got this idea from Chapter 20 of Sunset Over Britain? I'd like to know how, since they've only posted up to Chapter 18?!?!?!
Otherwise, an excellent idea to solve the Lord Thingy problem...

This was a great idea for finally destroying Moldybutt, and what a plot
bunny! I can't wait to see if/when other authors run with it, but
I'm not sorry you'll leave it along...that gives you more time for
finishing Hunter & Maiden

Nice one shot. Reminds me of the plot in Terry Goodkinds Chainfire. Well done.

amamama Friday 23rd September 2005 06:26 | Lord Who? |
Yes! Now this is something I would love see happening.
Great story and a wonderful way to get rid of the Moldy Wart. Of
course one can argue like AllieKiwi did, and I wonder what about the
written history that already exists? But I digress. I just loved
it, and I loved for Harry to be able to fulfill the prophecy without
murdering Tom. Excellent work.
Thanks!

Hmm. What about all the writings about Voldy? |
Wednesday 12th October 2005 10:14 | Lord Who? (Author Response) |
Well, they're all affected by the Fidelius part of the spell, just like any documents to do with Grimmauld Place. Only Harry can read them, but he's not going tell anyone that. Where the "fun" sets in will be the references to related events that don't directly involve Tommy-boy; for instance, books talking about Harry being the BWL may still be legible, but no-one will know why he has that title! They may come up with an explanation -- he survived the murder of his parents, for instance -- but they won't know who killed the Potters. And so on... lots of potential there for comedy as the entire wizarding world feels as though it's half-woken with a hangover. |
MagnoliaMama Friday 23rd September 2005 05:27 | Lord Who? |
*laughs* I thought that was very, very clever. I especially appreciated Voldemort's ultimate fate.
|
amulder Friday 23rd September 2005 05:22 | Lord Who? |
For instance... what would become of books in Hermione's possession
such as "The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts". Lots of blank
pages, I expect?
Fun little one-shot.
thanks for sharing

You're welcome, art. Yes, a lot of books are going to be magically modified by the spell -- and won't that drive nuts?! |

Interesting concept, certainly gives the reader something to think about!
Great little tale.
