Harry Potter and the Grand Alliance
With the prophecy thing -- What if Voldemort doesn't think Harry (or anyone else since he's so completely NOT better than everyone else *smirks*) is his equal but he really is? Harry has some of the "powers" Voldemort has (such as being a Parseltongue) and has survived the Killing Curse and with pure luck (maybe) escaped Moldyshort's attacks on his life several times. There has to be a reason for that -- either Harry already had those "powers" and the Killing Curse thrown at him wasn't cast correctly or something OR Voldemort truly did 'mark him as an equal' that night and that part of the prophecy was interpreted correctly. In short, I'm saying that what if ol' Voldie is too arrogant to think that anyone could possibly be an equal to him and therefore would think that Harry is just a thorn in his side that has "irked him for far too long" (that irked part is an inside joke with a friend l0l) and is much too lucky for his own good that he must kill just so that people will stop worshipping Harry for what Moldie did all those years ago and all of that wondrous junk.

Anyway, GREAT chapter. I think it could have been a little more detailed or the fight scene longer or you could have shown him in Diagon Alley a bit longer to add some substance... but I like how he's developing a relationship with Ginny even if it's still on the ground level.

You could be right - I merely felt at the time that the "mark him as his equal" could mean a deliberate action on his part. I don't think (now) that's the way Jo was leaning, but that's how I wrote this.

I think Voldy felt Dumbledore was an equal even during his first rise to power - or at least very close. Thus, he avoided attacking Hogwarts - a deliberate action that showed respect for a dangerous opponent. I felt that he might eventually come to view Harry the same way, and mark him in some similar fashion.

I'm enjoying this a lot. The emotions seem very real to me...and Ginny's worries are all very believable. Way to go!

I'm always glad to hear that something I've done with a female character is believable. Being a guy, I don't claim to understand women, but since they're 50% of the population, I kindof have to write them.

I like that you are poking holes in the prophecy.  I have spent a little time doing that myself.  Here is a thought for you.  Why does almost everyone think only Voldemort can kill Harry?  I even take this direction with the story I wrote, it is on mugglenet.com, but the prophecy does not say that only Voldemort can kill Harry.  It says only that the equal will have the power to kill Voldemort

It also says of the Dark Lord and his equal, that one must kill the other to survive.  If that is the case could someone destroy Voldemort by killing Harry?  Thereby dening Voldemort the ability to kill Harry and fulfill the prophecy.

I can't take much credit for poking holes in the prophecy; a little symbolic analysis seems to show that its self-contradicting. I know Jo says she took a lot of time on it, but I have to say I was dissapointed both at first reading and later, trying to analyze it.

Well, the prophecy doesn't say that V marked his equal consciously.

True. In fact, if you believe Dumbledores interpretation it has been done, and unconsciously. Interpreting prophecies is always a challenge, however.

I'm afraid I'm stuck with the fact that prophecies, especially like the one in OotP, don't fit well with Jo's insistance that it is the choices we make that matter - do we have the will to make choices or not?

I dont know if someone has already told you but Tom's informer never heard the part about the child being marked as an equal. He was thrown out before he heard that. I just double checked because I thought that I might be wrong. Just as a point of information.

Ah, thanks. I'm afraid I'm missing your point, however.
