This is one of the better harry potter stories I have read. I don't know if all of the characters are spot on, but the Harry Potter you wrote is one of the most real I have seen. Thanks for the enjoyment, and I hope it continues soon

Great , it's really a big history you've got, it's about the third time I read it, but i'm not gettin tired of it, that part, you know, the one of the final battle against Voldemort it was mos likely the best i've heard of, and i think though it was we all wanted, a bloody fight and a great duel between them, though Hermione and Ron's deaths was a low punch i'm at th edge of tears every time i read about it....

keep doing this great fic.....

oh, by the way, when do you think to update? i'ts jus not fast enough....

cheers...

You do realise this story is incredible, don't you?

After spending more hours than I can count reading through this WIP, reading each chapter several times, I figured the least I could do was to write a review, giving you praise, for each chapter. It also gives me an excuse to read through everything again. So here goes the first of many review that will come in the next few weeks:

A brilliant, heart-wrenching and thoroughly inspired first chapter. For the first time, a fan-written chapter has truely made me empathise with everything Harry is going through. Harry's reaction to the events that have happened seem to fit so well in the dark, alternate future you created; not only do you skillfully convey the torrent of grief that Harry is feeling, but you also show a suicidal side to his character that fits well with what we already know of Harry. We know from canon that Harry's emotions are often strong and expressive, and so to hear him turning more and more suicidal with self loathing fits with his strong feelings of inferiority, anger, and morality. Often, fanfictions have Harry's emotions toned down a lot, and so it's refreshing to see that this isn't the case, particularly bearing in mind the horrors he has experienced in this version of events.

The death of Voldemort is handled well too; the scene was short, not giving many details, but gave the impression of a long fight that was not won easily, though Harry had the upper hand. Voldemort's actual death, being blasted to pieces after having his shoulder ripped apart and his mind assulted, was far more satisfying than JK's expelliarmus-based end.

Injecting small doses of humour into the story is done well, not being too distracting from the mood; in fact, the humour contrasts nicely with the dark theme of the chapter, helping to amplify the negative emotions straight after the humour.

All in all, a very well written, well thought-out chapter, providing a solid foundation to the story that has become my favourite amongst any fanfiction, Harry Potter or otherwise. This story is a rare gem amongst a plethora of mediocre works, and would be well-worth paying for, if payment for your work was necessary. Thankyou for the free gift of the chapters already written, and I look forward to reading each new installment as it is written. You are indeed to be commended on such fine work.

There is a statement that Harry was the last remainign member of order and all who he loved died. Though I didn't find a note about Ron's dead, More to it as a tactical force he could really help Harry in his plans. Or he just gone post factum? ^^

_______
from GryffindorDragon's review:

You accounted for the death of most everyone (at least Neville took out Bella ) but not Ron and Hermione .
I really liked the part where Harry carries on a mental discussion with deceased Hermione to be able to carry on research; quite touching.

Actually she died to:
In their last year together, after Hermione died, Ron .....

One point ..... now that the last JKR book is out .... don't worry if you are a little different .... I rather like the idea of the sorting hat as the last horicux and not harry.....

I started reading this a long time ago, and I got sidetracked... When I saw all the recent updates I decided to start it again. I must say, out of all the fanfics I've read, this is by far the best written and most 'grabbing' prologue I've read. And it's very ambitious- having you START you story with an overwiew of the defeat of Voldemort, without your story really even being about that! Very well done!

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past
This story, no this chapter, is by far one of the most moving i have read in fanfiction to date. Its a gut wrenching story of a poorboys unfortunate life, told in such a way that you can't help but feel sorry for him in the deepest way. I honestly beleive this perhaps is one of the greatest serious fanfics i have read, (and just for a note, this is my third time rereading to the up to date chapters) and i feel would be a shame if it could not be finished.

Comparisons? well it faintly reminds me of another quality story from years back, by Barb *wink* and its even more angsty then the ElizaDiawnaSnape Trilogy... I can honestly say i would wrather read this story than quite a large many books.

Thank you for such a wonderfully way of passing time and leaving reality to enter the life of JKR's great characters which you have so masterly redone.

Best of luck, and please even if it seems as reviews slow, and people may stop reading, you definately have a solid fanbase, your work is loved, dont just give up on it yet, or because of the end of the series in reality.

My favorite line from this prologue. Well done, well done. I have already read the entire story--thus far--and it enjoyed it immensely. Despite my normal dislike of angst, I kept reading past this chapter and was hooked. Thank you for a fun chapter. I look forward to reviewing the rest

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past
'Voldemort screamed as the emotional torrent swept aside his defences and ripped through his mind. His black soul withered in the deluge of love and grief as 'the power he knew not' gave him agony that made Cruciatus feel like a soft caress. Harry wondered if Voldemort was already driven mad by the time he was able to raise his wand and cast the blasting charm. He supposed it didn't really matter.'

Beautiful. The idea of Voldemort spending his last few seconds of life in a pain beyond comprehension is immensely satisfying.

The ideas behind the time travel plot device are solid, by which I mean they sound technical enough to be convincing. I currently lack a PhD in Theoretical Physics so I have no idea whether there was a great deal of research involved for that explanation or if you instead followed the time tested method of stunning the reader out of their disbelief with large words.

For me however the most interesting part of this chapter would be the American War Mages. Their adoption of Muggle tactics and weaponry is a fascinating look at an alternate Auror group. The way I reasoned it, it all makes a great deal of sense. America is a much younger country than England. The line between Muggles and Wizards is probably not as greatly defined, nor is the American Wizarding world as steeped in tradition. How many pureblood families would have left their mansions in Europe to emigrate to the colonies? America is most likely a country of 'blood traitors'.

I imagine a US Wizarding society born out of the few Wizards who came to the colonies, but made in bulk of Muggleborns. Obviously, they became independent of England when the Muggles did. Or maybe even before the Revolution? There wouldn't have been any Hogsmeade or old Wizarding country in America. They would be much more integrated with the Muggles, lacking the ancient Wizarding strongholds of Europe. American Wizards probably watch television, eat fast food and wear suits and ties to work. I imagine the pureblood families would have a great deal of disdain for them.

I can see more ideas like this in the way the American relief force operates. As opposed to their Auror counterparts they have adopted Muggle Military ranks and procedures. Again this suggests the overall 'Muggleization' of American Wizards. Perhaps there is a secret war room, deep beneath the Pentagon, to which the War Mages report?

It all catches the imagination. I wish Rowling would discuss other Wizarding societies more in the books.

This story is absolutely fabulous, and exactly what I needed! I'm one of those people who when I read the first books in a series I get really frustrated because I know more then the main character. I always think "NO don't go through that door" etc. This story totally furfills my inner desire for the character to know what he/she is in for! Not only that, but your story is well written, very much so, and doesnt give Harry a really easy time of it, even though he knows the future. It would be so easy just to have Harry be brilliant all the time and fly through the books without any trouble, but you twist it enough to give him hardship but still have it be plausible. You seem to have found the perfect balance between Harry being a 30 year old with a devastating past/future, and 11/12 year old Harry being innocent and happy! All in all, the best H/G fic out there, and one of my most favorite FF ever! Thanks for your work, can't wait for the next chapter!

Absativley posolutley LOVE IT ! I cant believe how into this I am...its almost comparable to my obsession with the actual series...but nothing can ever replace my love for the first hp book...but this story is so unbelievable good I’m amazed...I’m just going to say a bunch of randomly great things about you because, quite frankly, you rocky my socks!!! This is most defiantly my favorite fan fic of all time ...its excellent! If it were an actual published book I would buy it with out hesitation because it is soooo grand!! Yay for time travel. This is the only time travel story I actually read all the way to the end (or where the author left off) because it isn’t lame. Your characters all are very in key to the real characters (to me at least) and I have no complaints except that I wish I could read the whole thing at once because its soooo good I don’t want to stop reading till the end. Okay now this review is lamely long, but I don’t care...To sum this up: I praise your work

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past
Interesting account of the end; one slight weakness -- you mention the absence of deatheaters at the final confrontation (though you hedge you bet by indicating that they would die when Voldie did -- if they had the mark). It doesn't seem to follow that there are no deatheaters left to support Voldie and yet someone among the Americans is passing information to the deatheaters.
Wow, you paint a really dark and forlorn picture. Poor Harry . I certainly hope canon doesn't end similarly (of course, the part about an extra 13 years won't be there as there's only one more book). You accounted for the death of most everyone (at least Neville took out Bella ) but not Ron and Hermione .
I really liked the part where Harry carries on a mental discussion with deceased Hermione to be able to carry on research; quite touching.
I'd do it when I was younger

I think that, "I plan to cheat like Draco Malfoy on a potions exam," is one of my favorite fictional Harry lines of all time. =)

I'm reading this for the first time today. I saw your latest chapter update on the sidebar, and figured I'd give it a try. So far, I really like what I've read. Your story is interesting, and I like the idea that the war cost everything in Harry's life, but not his life.

Just wanted to drop you a line on this chapter -- I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to read the story (RL and all that), but I am reading.

I really love this concept -- I'm a huge fan of AU and time travel stories, and this combines both aspects. You did a really good job setting up this future, with Harry left alone amidst the ruins. And the portrait Albus was very nicely done as well.

Thanks! A lot of the prologue just came to me in a single image, and the picture of Harry grieving in the ruins and arguing with the portrait was a big part of it... along with him committing suicide in the ruins of Number Four, Privet Drive.

It was supposed to sound like thaumaturgical techno-babble. Since the temporal transit field was basically the Maguffin for the entire story, i had to burn some 'unobtanium' and craft a rationale for it to work - and not work for other situations.

What an interesting chapter. Aw poor Harry that's horrible, everyone died. So sad! Wow, you've put a lot of thought into how this will happen, usually people just take the time turner and flip it, I really like how Harry researched this elaborate theory. I'm glad Dumbledore's helping him. What an interesting chapter and very nicely written!
Monday 23rd January 2006 13:13Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past (Author Response)
Thanks! i had to come up with something that no one else would have used before (if long-term time travel was easy, someone would have shot Tom Riddle as a baby, not to mention Hitler, Stalin, etc...), and also make it elaborate enough that Harry would obviously only get the one shot (otherwise much less dramatic tension),

I have been reading this fic at SINK.  I still think that this is one of the best starts for a fanfic that I have EVER read.  Just wanted to let you know that.  I love the way that you have put so much thought into how Harry must get to the past.  Keep it up.  I look forward to further updates on either site.
Tuesday 10th January 2006 06:06Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past (Author Response)
Thanks! The first chapter pretty much wrote itself after I outlined the basic plot - once I got inside of future-Harry's head, it just all came pouring out. The tricky part of the time travel theory was to make it 1) not work with anything else - otherwise that article would never have seen the light of day and 2) not make it something Harry could do again, so he HAS to get it right this time (otherwise much less dramatic tension). More updates are on the way!

Oh my God. You have GOT to be kidding me!! That was possibly the most evil cliffhanger in the whole entire world. Universe. This is a wonderful story. Well, it's not cheerful, but it's still very very impressive. The writing has you on the edge of your seat and the storyline makes you beg for more. The theory of the 'field' actually made my head hurt and my eyes sore. I sort of bluffed my way through the paragraph, pretending to understand it.   I still can't believe you just left us hanging there. Well, there's only one thing left to say:

UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!

Now. Have I made myself quite clear?

Great story. Absolutely wonderful. Can't wait for the next chapter!!

I don't consider myself evil. Really. Chaotic Good, maybe. More like Neutral Good. I'm sorry if the technobabble on the Temporal Transit Field made your head hurt. I have a background in engineering and psychology, so I can fake technical jargon as needed, and I wanted that to sound like something that came out of a high-level wizarding technical journal that Dumbledore would subscribe to.

Next chapter is in beta, and should be out soon.
