Roger and Lisa, A Romance
Oh hell! I thought their second date was going so much better than the first one. Then someone cough Roger cough cough paniced and fled. This is not going to be good for Lisa's self esteem.

Hee. There's a reason Roger is almost 30 and not married! Don't worry about Lisa's self-esteem. That kiss (and Roger running away) woke her up.

Thanks for reading!

Oh, stupid, stupid Roger!

This story is phenomenal, as is all of your writing! I just finished Lee Jordan: Tour Guide (I have the window open waiting to leave you a review), and I came right over here to read this story as well. I love how you've tied everything into a MWMW/NZC universe, and even though Harry and Ginny aren't the main characters, I am loving the stories you are weaving.

Wonderful job!

How sweet of you to read this! I hope you like it - it really is one of my favorite stories. And yes, Roger really blows it here. Sigh. But he figures it out eventually.

Lee Jordan: Tour Guide is a long story - esp without H/G until the end! Thanks for reading that, too. I'm amazed anyone wants to read it after HBP came out. So it's always good to hear when someone does!

Poor Roger. Two epiphanies in one chapter. And it's always worse when your brother is right.

I especially liked the scene between he and Lisa over dinner. They seemed torn between openness and being guarded. No wonder the intensity of Lisa's kiss was too much for Roger to handle.

Yes - and Richard is right so much of the time! I'm glad Roger's reaction made sense here.

Wow, am I ever behind in reviewing. I got this chapter read before my vacation but wanted to reread it to really compare the dates and then...well, you know.

Like everyone else, Candace's understanding surprised me, but then -- based on her description, I'm sure she won't be alone for long.

Having read all the follow-on chapters, it is interesting to read this and see all the running themes. "Of course Roger didn't have plans" and all the stuff with numbers and the relation between the locked room and time. You are a genius, and not just of fluff!

The kiss is so well described -- complete with the counter digging into Roger. How could he run and yet, how could he not -- these things are scary.

LOL - I so wanted to have Candace meet Mr. Kane, so she could be Candy Kane, but I felt that would er - lower the tone.

I'm so glad you liked the kiss - but I'm most interested in your professional opinion of the smuffy scene at the end of chapter five. Thanks fo reading and inspiring so much of this story!

Excellent! I'm way beyond fashionably late to this party, but I'm thrilled that you're back in business, St. Margarets!

I have to admit, the introduction didn't totally hook me - you started with Roger's detached, cynical, bored point of view, which actually put me off a bit, a little too flat for an intro, perhaps. And it kinda felt like you piled a little too much into the first chapter - too much information with Lisa's situation, I think, too quickly for the reader. I wouldn't have expected Lisa to confide so suddenly in a man she hadn't seen in years. Despite that, though, you've definitely gotten the ball rolling with later chapters, and I'm getting drawn in again the way all good St. Margarets fics do. :-)

I haven't had time to read the, uh, latest chapters (Chapters 4 and on), but so far I think my favorite thing is the way you're developing these two characters. I like Roger's world-weary persona, and the "been there, done that" way he looks at the world. It works well with his years of womanizing and constantly ending up with all the wrong women - who wouldn't be cynical about love when he can anticipate the timing of his dates to the minute? His date with Candace was a total hoot - I loved how he anticipated all the small details that he's seen so many times before. That inner monologue was great.

I also rather like Lisa's character so far. LOL, she does remind me of Holly a little bit, although she's much more bookish and shy and much less certain of herself. It's the gentleness, I think, that gets me - not at all a Ginny, this one. :-) I do like how intellectual she is, and how she used to put in long hours for the Department of Mysteries. And to have the patience to count out grains of magical sand! After having determined that other methods of measuring out sand weren't as effective in Time-Turner manufacture. That was a brilliant little touch; painstaking attention to detail really is a defining characteristic of science - *ahem* I mean, uh research in magic. :-)

And finally, I rather like one particular aspect of Roger and Lisa's budding romance - the fact that Lisa keeps surprising world-weary Roger. As well as the way they keep talking about time. The passage of time seems to be emerging as some kind of.... motif, I guess, for lack of a better word. I like how it comes up with the discussion of deja vu, how it's something that Lisa has studied... Hmm. You're going to do something interesting with this, and I'm not yet sure what. *puzzled, thoughtful look*

Anyway, nice work so far! Looking forward to what comes next for our hero and heroine, now that they've kissed - so quickly, for a St. Margarets fic! Just three chapters in! What's gotten into you? :-)

Hi David - thanks for plunging in to the water! It takes a real man to read a story with Romance in the title. Actually, you will find that plot rather straight forward - but the themes and characters are what make this story complex. Yes - time and love are the two main threads of this story - luckily Lisa works at the Department of Mysteries and I have built in metaphors all over the place.

Lisa is a gentle soul - but there's a lot of Ravenclaw in her. That can be good or it can be bad. It's hard to sum her up because there are a lot of layers to her that are revealed as the story continues. The attention to detail is there - as is the planning - as is the tenacity. She is a good magical researcher.

Roger will have his chance to shine - poor guy. I had to start them both off evenly unattractive in their way. And the first chapter - gah. Backstory is tough - what can I say? Thanks for reading!

“Ooo,” her weird purple eyes widened." lol. That just struck me as pretty much hilarious. I loved the repitition of "Of course -name- didn't have any plans" with the corresponding meals. And that kiss! *oh my* I s'pose this laywer was [italic]definetely[/italic] surpirsed! Great work; I love it! Delani

I really enjoyed writing that "low-stakes" date with two people who knew how to play the game. It was fun. I'm glad you liked the kiss - more of those to come! Thanks for reading.

Roger and Lisa, A Romance
I love this story!
I have been reading it, and keep coming on to check if you have updated and that was when I realised I had left without leavinga review last time ( I know, terrible *shakes head in disbelif*)

so I thought I would come on now and comment, I love how even though roger is more "experienced" in relationships, its lisa who is the braver and faces the possibility of a relationship and it is roger who is terrifiedand runs, bless him, even if he is an idiot.

I loved the date with the "friendly" hufflepuff, and I am glad you made her nice, I loved this bit:

Roger was so preoccupied that he answered without thinking, “Everyone knits these days. I wonder why?”

“So their flatmates can have the place to themselves one night a week,” Candace said sharply.

lol! made me smile, so anyway, I am going to go and wait for your next update, you've truely got me hooked

It was brilliant and I can't wait for more, 10/10!

Hey Rose! Thanks for the review! I'm just glad you're enjoying the story.  Sherry is going to put up chapter four Sunday, I think and chapter five is ready to go.

I think you'll like the next few chapters - very fluffy.  This is a romance after all!   I'm glad you liked Candace - she's just too young for him but with a good heart.

Ahhhh!!! Noooo!! Roger, get your butt back in there!! Don't leave Lisa!!

Okay, I've gotten way too into this story in the past hour that I read it. That said, I've now reached the unfortunate conclusion that I'll have to kill you if you don't update soon.

Have a pleasant day!

Poor Lisa. I'm not sure what was going through Roger's mind. I'd love to know what was bothereing him and if he wanted to kiss her why did he leave so suddenly? Poor Lisa went to all that trouble of buying new clothes and cooking and he did that. I hope that doesn't impact her new sense of self-esteeem. I hope Padma doesn't say I told you so.

I loved Roger's date with the healer. He's lucky he got an understanding one. Not many women would listen to a man talk about another woman on their date. But the pruple eyes were a nice touch.
Thursday 12th January 2006 07:50Roger and Lisa, A Romance (Author Response)
All will be revealed in the next chapter - but if you look at the comparison of the two dates, you'll see how Roger isn't really used to such an emotional response from himself or from his date.  And Candace was playing the dating game as well - so no worries for her.  By the end I wanted to have her marry someone with the last name Kane - but I thought that wouldn't fit with the tone of this story.

Roger and Lisa, A Romance

Well, heavens, rushing the fences a bit here aren't we? What with this being only chapter 3 and all.  No wonder Roger had to pop off a bit abruptly ...

On a more serious note, your writing keeps getting better and better.  The conversations flow effortlessly and the ocasional snarky asside is always on target.  And thank you, finally, for not making Candace a twit.  Even freindly girls from Hufflepuff have hidden depths ...

Thursday 12th January 2006 05:39Roger and Lisa, A Romance (Author Response)
Poor Candace - she's just young.  That's really what I was trying to highlight for Roger's character.  Yes, these two do rush along - chapter five is going to have a "mature" rating for one scene.  Yikes - the first such scene I've ever written.  Anyway - Thanks for reading and more to come soon!

Oh.  My. :fans self:

Excellent reaction on Roger's part - how spot on - and what a wonderful start to the story!  I'm intrigued by the St. Mungos mystery, interested in the romance, and caught up in the drama of these characters.  Hurrah!

I knew the fluff would work, but I was bit concerned about the St. Mungo's storyline - but then - I don't know how many people really like their fluff straight up, so to speak. Thanks for reading! More to come soon!

The bit about papers belonging in piles in brilliant, and so very Ravenclaw. Those geniuses are way to smart to worry about things like files.

This is really great. What wonderful characters. When Roger was watching Lisa with the quill, I felt like I shouldn't be reading that. It was too intimate, too vulnerable. And the wind smelling like rain? Georgous.

Thursday 12th January 2006 05:35Roger and Lisa, A Romance (Author Response)

Well, lots more intimacy and vulnerability to come, I'm afraid.  Another reason I had to write the entire thing in private before I lost my nerve . . .

I'm so glad you like the characters - I really did, too.  Thanks for reading!

Argh! He gets what he wants and then makes a mad dash for the door (so to speak)?  What's he playing at?   Maddening man.  Ruining the start of a lovely something.

LOL - I believe the characters use the same words later on about the shock of "getting what you want."  There something is not all together ruined - I'm not that cruel of an author.

Oh Roger you codger what have you done, left a girl in the rain you must be insane! Scared by a kiss from a pretty miss, coward I say; cus' you won't find a girl like that anyday!

Jokes aside, what a wonderful chapter! I couldn't help but reading it here on PS (since the system works faster here then on SQ), and all I really can say is that you are the goddess of fluff! Gimme mooooore!

Another rhyming review!  Yes, Roger eventually comes to that conclusion - but it's a bit of a rough road, since he messed up so royally! Still, I'm not a cruel author - I love my fluff too much for them to be apart too long.  Thanks for reading!

Kissing in the rain . . . one of my fantasies.  sigh.  Roger really is shy of commitment, isn't he?  I just hope Lisa's heart isn't broken.

This is a great chapter, too. I love the better look at Lisa that we got here - she is a bright and sweet woman. I think too, we got a lot of insight into Roger's character. I like Richard's assessment of the situation with Roger and Candace (and Lisa) - he is a good "older brother" model - just enough with the conscience thing, and lots of the don't ask, don't tell, etc. thing. ;-).

I like the fact that Lisa made Roger cook - but I must warn you. I made my hubby cook once and now he cooks more than I do!

Please keep the updates coming soon. I am desperate for the next installment!!!

Roger eventually takes to cooking - but it's a long road.  My husband can cook, but he really doesn't clean up all that well.  (He never puts things back in the right place)

You'll see more of Richard - he's a good guy with an interesting history.  Thanks for reading!

Oh, ouch! Bad Roger! *headdesk* That sort of behaviour is not to be tolerated! Or, I suppose it is, because I'll be back to read the next chapter. But he was bad. And you cliffied. Poor Lisa. Poor me. :) I suppose we'll all have to make do.

I loved Lisa's talking about prophecy and deja vu..enough so that I saved what she said about prophecy in my file of Interesting Quotes (which I keep in a folder on my desktop).

Mary, Mary, wrote a story,  of kissing in the rain
the readers get all hot and bothered, but who are we to blame?

Roger and Lisa, stumbling along, an adventure on the way,
Silly Roger, up and runs; his feelings confused him today.

Now poor Lisa, what shall she think, is Padma in the right?
We'll wait and see, but Lisa, I think is in for a bad night.

Mary, Mary, delightful author, I thank you for this time,
of diverting reading,  joy and kissing, so I give you now, this rhyme.

Blessings to you, Mary
thanks for the warm fuzzies.

Thanks for the reply to my previous review. The myth of Cupid and Psyche - ooh, very intriguing. I admit I had to refresh my memory of it, since the only thing I could remember was that Cupid scratched himself with his own arrow and fell in love rather reluctantly. But after I looked the story up, I see that there are a ton of themes going on in it. Can't wait to see which ones you'll use in your story (the bitchy mother-in-law? the two-timing sisters? (or is Padma cast in that role - minus the cheating part?) the long list of trials before she can see her lover again?)

I agree, Roger is a good choice for Eros, though you obviously decided to upgrade Psyche to a more intelligent, less shallow-minded person. And this episode's Roger did look more like the one from canon, so the story feels more satisfying that way as well (I hate cop-outs in books, and unfortunately so many writers use them; it all started with the famous "and they lived happily ever after" :-)).
Wednesday 11th January 2006 18:26Roger and Lisa, A Romance (Author Response)

I certainly didn't look at the myth for characterization - more for thematic qualities and trying to find the truth in that story.  Padma is indeed in the sister role - but she doesn't try to undermine them.  I didn't want a rotten mother-in-law figure, so Lisa's mother is more the villian in this case.

The trials are important - and of course - love and immortality.  You'll have to let me know if I actually pull it off by the end! :) Thanks for reading!

Nice of you to make Candace not just a flirty girl, but one who listens, too.
Now, Roger. Not a fan of dance clubs, is he? Amazing how truthful he is, though.
Lisa echoing Roger when she asked if he had plans for the evening was nice... Learns fast, does she?
I loved the evening. But it's not-nice-at-all of you to leave us like that. Because I do like Lisa now. How must she be feeling now, poor dear...? sniff.

Oh, yes - poor Lisa.  But  the path to true love was never easy, you know!  Lisa does learn fast and I think you'll like some of her changes as the work progresses.

I had a good time with Candace!
