My friend Rachel (Girlspell) has been telling me for ages that I ought to read your stories. Right now I haven't got the bandwidth to begin reading another multi-chapter fic (I think I'm following at least five others at the moment, in addition to my own writing), but I was looking at the old Challenge winners and ran across this gem.
It's simply marvelous. There's a great deal one could say about it, but the thing that sticks out most is the clever way you used the concept of anniversaries -- the idea of remembering dates -- to convey depth of feeling. It was beautiful.
I was also taken with the concreteness of the details, from Ginny burrowing her head under the pillow to the snowball in Charlie's hand to the activity in the kitchen. Also I was glad that you didn't hit us over the head with Ginny's sorrow, or angst, or regret at separating from Harry, but instead let her proceed through the moments of her daily life and the love and, er, fedundity all around her.

I'm so into Coven that I needed some hwimsey reading this weekend and decided on this piece. I loved the friendly and humorous and hectic Weasley family environment you created. But the electricity for me started when Ginny saw H.Potter's name on the table and she started to go all gooey immediately. From that point on she was melting butter in Harry's presence from his eye glances to his spoken words and the romantic tension just became a wonderful aura coming off the page that it allowed me to sit back and just bask in the enjoyment. Harry's memory of key dates showed Ginny his seriousness and ultimately his intentions and it made me melt too when he made the get back together request for the six month anniversary. Just loved your fluff and now i know the full scope of how you can present Harry and Ginny. |

Really cute story! I love the whole idea of dates and anniversaries
Actually, the very last date in the story is my birthday (I'm kind of flattered)
Good writing too.
It would have been fun for the story to last a little bit longer so you could fill us in more precisely about their past.
But it was very fine that way!

hpchica Monday 20th November 2006 18:31 | An Anniversary to Remember |
Well, when I read this before, I didn't bother reviewing it. Not because it wasn't absolutely wonderful(which it was) but because I was too lazy. HEHE. But now that you've managed to put this up on Story of the Week, I decided to pass by again.
This is beautifully written. You snuck in little details about the characters that passed through the story, yet made everything flow perfectly. And the idea of having Hermione's triplets being turned into balloons is hysterically funny. Her response is exactly as I would imagine it to be.
So yea, just wanted to sneak in this little review(when I'm not insanely tired, as I was when I reviewed Chap2 of Coven) =D
-Alex
PS
Can't wait for Chap3 of Coven! =D |

Oh, another beauty! ^^ So lovely! The little toasts were so short and sweet, I adore Molly and Arthur so much! And Aunt Pledge was definitely an interesting character; I'd really like to see more of her, even if it was just a short background appearance or something, haha! But the interaction between Harry and Ginny (I love when they have kind of knee-buckling reactions to each other), and the anniversary theme were my favorite parts. They were so sweet without being overly fluffy. Fantastic job, as always! (Oh, and the deflated nephews, of course. Quite amusing. "...before my nieces got out the darts." Hahaha!) |

Hello!
Thank you so much for such a kind review. My beta, iviolinist is responsible for a good deal of the praise. She is wonderful.
Oh, Aunt Pledge. Doesn't everyone have someone like her at family meals? I had the cheek pincher. Oi. You must share with me your odd relative stories -- you must have at least one! I'll try to find a way to get Aunt Pledge in a story. She's scrumptiously silly. (say that 5 times fast)
You keep me going with reviews like this. Thank you.

Felix Felicis Wednesday 8th November 2006 17:36 | An Anniversary to Remember |
First let me say that I'm pathetic because I didn't review this when I read it the first time. I just had to vote for you because this was my favorite of the bunch, and that's saying something.
There's a wonderful feeling to this story. It's kind of hard to put into words but I'll give it a try. (You'd think that someone who writes this stuff would be able to describe it.) I felt like I was really there, standing there watching everything happen. Almost like a member of the family but even better because I get to hear what's happening in Ginny's head. Your description of the Burrow and all of the red-heads was just fantastic. The room added onto the house was perfect, not only for the celebration but also for the atmosphere of the dance. It was romantic without being overboard. It was just right.
You've got Ginny's character spot on. My favorite line was the very first one. I hated anniversaries. Especially when they impinged on my sleep. That's just like Ginny. I loved how you described her reaction to Harry even after all these years - that she loved him too well to stop liking him. Perfect!
As always, I love your writing. It's engaging, it's descriptive without being wordy, and you manage to grab my attention in a way that makes me want to skip ahead, but I don't because then I might miss something!
I love this story and I think I'm going to go add it to my favorites! |
Monday 13th November 2006 13:48 | An Anniversary to Remember (Author Response) |
Felix, What would I do without you. You are like a breath of fresh air, an armful of roses, a steaming cup of hot chocolate all in one. Thank you for being you.
You are NOT pathetic. And if you insist on using such terms I will be forced to give you a stern talking to. So there.
Thank you for such a gracious review. I desperately needed to write this as I was writing Coven, and as you can tell, they are different animals. I felt like I got to eat a piece of candy amidst a interesting but grueling class. Here, I sneak a piece to you, too!
You write fluff very well. And you're absolutely right -- it's difficult keeping it in check. Too much and you're ready for an insulin chaser, too little and why bother. Boy, I'm preachy today, aren't I?
I need to thank my beta iviolinist for her brilliance with this.
I adore her -- she makes this process so enjoyable.
But writers/readers like you do too. Thanks again. We need a way to hook up. I know you're not on LJ but how can we do it??

timbers Monday 30th October 2006 03:28 | An Anniversary to Remember |
Just brilliant. There is no other to put it. I've read your other works, hwimsey, and I have to say that all of your stories are what I like to call "a well wrapped package". Its all glittery and nice from the outside but the gift inside is even better. You have a bit of everything that is so characteristic of H/G- humor, that right amount of painful agony on the part of both characters, the love shared between them, and the interfrence of certain family members
The first person narrative was done extremely well and did its job wonderfully. I experienced everything Ginny experienced; I think I nearly fell out of my chair when Harry started reciting those dates. A fantastic build up to the moment!
Overall, its one of the best I read in the competition and congrats on a most excellent story!

“If I could dance all night. Then, I would dance all night…”
What a great sense of buoyancy this shorty gives. The rough morning that turns into an absolutely fantastic day is always a great theme. I’ve seen Bridget Jones’ Diary and I am quite familiar with Chardonnay however, you will have to share the title of the ficlet when you’re able to divulge such. I thoroughly enjoy first-person stories. It brings to mind, the tingling feelings that are associated from family get-togethers where stories that should never be repeated are thrown about like a stand-up routine at the Comedy Connection. If the Weasley family wasn’t the perfect source…
I had a tough time picturing a Polynesian woman with auburn hair but decided to concentrate on the story. You did a marvelous job conveying the changes in Ginny’s moods and feelings as the days events progressed. The interaction and dialog with other characters was nicely done, as was her insights from the feedback she was getting from Harry. Remembering special dates and events is always a big thing for many people. Despite what most people think, there are men that hold these times dear as well. It makes occasions such as you created that much sweeter.
I do feel bad for Winifred though, she sounds like a fetching young thing with much to give someone.(*tsk)
Toooooo baaaaaad.

It was really sweet, the way that Harry remembered all those dates when something memorable happened to him. I think the best one was that he knew exactly when he first saw Ginny, even though he didn't have any romantic feelings for her then.
