I would think they could call up some rather ugly stuff to throw at Dolores, to get her on the defensive more.

I hate Umbridge, but I love your story. You've crafted a great story and told it well.

Squeak! You have an uncanny ability to get Dolores just right - and I find it very alarming. I was grinding my teeth while reading the delicious court room scene as I often did in canon, but please, PLEASE tell me this one will be different than canon, and she wont' be allowed to just get away with it. The centaurs weren't enough. I want the woman to suffer - badly. (Really, I'm not a terrible person, she just brings out the worst in me )

Thank you! Umbridge is a gift when you need a non-DE villain, she's just so perfectly horrible. As for the tribunal - well, the Trio do have a plan of sorts ...

Another really excellent chapter, SnokackCatcher. Your trial--which as you've said was the original seed for the whole story--was fantastic; it seemed very much like something that could actually happen, with the various personalities playing their roles--the protective, desperate grandmother; the insidious villain (I loved your line about her "simpering"); the decent-hearted but basically over-his-head judge; the angry best friend (go Ron!); all of them--in perfect character. Like any good trial, this one had revelations and surprises, but none of them felt arbitrary; it fall fit together like clockwork. Thank you again for developing such a thoughtful piece of fiction; I'm terribly excited to find out how you wrap it all up!

(And incidentally, if I can't figure out just what kind of entendre you had put into Hermione's mind when she said "worked for me," I just may have to kill myself. No pressure, though.)

Thanks -- glad the courtroom drama worked. I hope the final outcome won't be a disappointment. I was trying to tread a line between giving a hint and making it obvious. (Sort of like GoF did on a much bigger scale.)

As for Hermione -- erm, in the context of Ron's previous remark (and that other story) the entendre is probably pretty much single. I thought it might be the kind of remark she'd make to tease Ron without Harry really being sure what was meant. (Also, a hint to anyone who hadn't actually read the other story.)

Okay, please excuse me if the review becomes a little incomprehensible... My sleeves are still rolled up and I'm banging away on my keyboard with more than a little irritation, so I might not be at my most coherent.

I loved that chapter!! Or is it loved to hate? I don't know, but either way, this is some top notch writing.

Reading the first paragraph, I had my arms crossed and my bottom lip stuck out by the time I got to 'smug'. I had a good giggle at Harry fighting the urge to imitate a centaur, but not long after I threw up a little bit in my mouth when I got to the first 'hem hem'. Aaaargh!! I really, really, REALLY hate Umbridge!!
What I'm trying to say, is that you did an amazing job bringing each and every character to life in this chapter. You created such a strong atmosphere, I really felt like I was there (which is why I'm scowling... Oh, the injustice!!).

I'm really impressed at how well you were able to write solid 'courtroom drama', while still keeping everyone in character. The legal arguments had real credibility and there were some terrific twists and turns throughout all that action.

Kingsley's infuriating behaviour over the three chapters so far (which we have to believe is rooted in wisdom, however annoying it may be) is strongly reminiscent of Dumbledore, and his 'big picture' (especially where Umbridge is concerned) is one of the questions I can't wait to have answered, on top of the obvious; WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO TEDDY?!?

Really, really, great chapter, and I can't wait to read more : )

Thank you! Actually, the courtroom battle was the basic idea behind the story -- the rest came in as something to explain how it got to that point in the first place. Umbridge is such a teeth-on-edge type she makes a great villain of the piece.

Kingsly maybe wasn't intended to be quite as infuriating as he turned out -- but I suspect that he would be a good politician and must be experienced after his time with the Order and the PM. He does seem in canon to be someone who can be hard-headed about situations -- again, temperament and experience.

What a great courtroom scene! Having Amos Diggory preside was pure genius. Dolores Umbridge is so malicious that I felt like Booing every time she got to read the legal documents she had stumbled upon. The politics of the Ministry after the change of regime is also very well delineated.

This has to be my favorite description-
In two seconds flat, her manner had been transformed from something resembling Aunt Petunia at her worst to something resembling Lavender Brown at her worst, but the change was nevertheless distinctly promising.

Thank you! I'm not sure why Amos, it was just one of those ideas that occur and seem worth going with. Umbridge is so poisonous she's a gift of a villain.

Are you SURE you're not going to write more than four parts here? I could easily see this turning into a whole series of "what happened for the next 19 years" Seriously, though... I just don't want this to end -- I'm enjoying it FAR too much!!
Monday 6th October 2008 13:05A Law of the Medes and Persians (Author Response)
Thanks! No, just four parts -- the original plan was for something much shorter, it just kind of grew.
