Excellent wrap-up. I love how you showed Petunia's inner struggle, how everything she said pained her to say, but she said it anyway for Dudley's sake...

I loved this story! I was reading Deathly Hallows again the other day and I just kept thinking about what would happen in the Dursleys future, since the future of Harry and all of the other witches and wizards are pretty much covered. I love the idea of Lily, Snape, and James all coming together to try and knock some sense into Petunia. and I'd love to see the letter that Dudley writes to Harry! And Harry's reaction! lol That would be awesome.

Anyways you did a great job on this - I hope you keep writing!

Welcome back. missed your writing. Wow... Very intense. Am parent to pigeon pair boy and girl, two and a half and eleven weeks, so really beginning to think about kids experiences, & coming to terms all over again with my own abuse.
Your portrayal of young Harry just absolutely shredded me; no archtypal fairy tale depiction of hard times, but the real thing.
So sad, Dudley and Petunia, but so on the mark, even when she does begin to see the light. We are none of us completely pure...

This is very good. I really like the way that all the "ghosts" got their points accross to Petunia. James wrapped it up really well. Dwelling on the fact that Dudley would be the one to suffer being alone if Petunia didn't change some of her ways. The fact that she invited Deidre for several days and they would allow Dudley to go to her house was really amazing. The topper though was when she offered to give Dudley Harry's address so he could get in touch with his cousin. I'm glad was so eager to do that. Thanks for writing. I'm sorry you have had trouble with your shoulder. I hope it is healing well. I would like to see an epilog to this story when you can. p

Fantastic! Just what I needed to read. I loved visualizing Harry at the Burrow for Christmas trading secret looks with Ginny. I didn't expect Snape as one of the ghosts, and was pleasantly surprised and entertained with their dialogue. James was perfect. Everything I expected him to be. But Lily. Oh Lily. You did bring the tears when Lily looked at her son's skinny bones peeking through his clothes. Her quiet heartache was so moving.

Your story was perfect. It's so nice to read your work again. Feel better!

I loved your twist on A Christmas Carol. I think you did a great job of really making it your own and really working it to fit HP. Good work!

P.S. I hope you feel better soon!

Well, I admit I finished this story feeling positive about things ... optimistic about Dudley, even optimistic about Petunia ... only to have my good spirits promptly dashed somewhat when I read your Author's Notes immediately after. Oh well. She still did something good, even if it was all for her Dudley. I guess I *was* letting Petunia off lightly.

I don't understand, by the way, Petunia's closing remark - "it's in Lily's hands now"? That didn't follow at all from the story - I don't even know what she means? - so I felt the story ended a bit weakly by using that as its punch line.

Interesting that you took the bull by the horns and introduced the Snape/Lily/James triangle, allowing that Petunia's calculated insult struck home. Hmm.

Delightful little scene with the Potter children. A nice inverted parallel of the Dudley/Harry scene with the broken toy from the past.

Nice to see Melindaleo, one of the queens of H/G fanfics, back in the saddle again! I hope you had a good Christmas and the shoulder's healed.

What a great story! I love the HP perspective on an old classic Christmas story. You've done a great job keeping close enough to the fundamentals of the story but using Potterverse characters. Your choices for the three ghosts was fun and you did a *fantastic* job keeping them in character. This was a great story to read this Christmas and I enjoyed every bit of it. As always, your writing style is engaging, descriptive without being wordy, and entertaining. I always love your stories. Thanks for sharing this new one! Oh, and feel free to keep us entertained in the future!

Hi Melinda,

An absolutely wonderful and spot on ending to your Potterverse interpretation of The Christmas Carol. Your depiction of Petunia in this chapter rang especially true, with her helping Harry predictated on Dudley benefiting much more.

Thanks for the kind comments in the A/N! It was both a pleasure working with you and a lot of fun! Thanks for the opportunity.

Somewhere after that ending I am sure there is another great story in the future. If you cannot do it yourself, perhaps you should employ a ghost writer?

I really liked it and your right, Petunia would never do something for just Harry. You've done a great job and it was so much fun reading something of yours again. Thanks for writing!

Thank you for the great finish. This story was definitely a Christmas treat. I think you did a good job with Petunia's "conversion" - I think you are right that she would not be thrilled, but would do what seemed necessary to help Dudley. And who knows, that may be the first step toward becoming a somewhat kinder and more rational human being. I really loved this.

What a wonderful Christmas treat--a new Melindaleo story! I have had a great deal of fun speculating about who the different spirits would be. You are one of my favorite fanfic writers, and I was thrilled to see this new story. Cheers!

Well done, as always. I think you have caught the essence of the conflicts that Petunia is experiencing. She wants Dudley to have the best life possible but hasn't quite accepted any responsibility for how she has spoiled him.

I loved the ending. It was good to see the changes she made in response to her visitors.

Petunia wanted a grandbaby named after her, too. Lily wasn’t going to outshine her again.

What a motivation on Petunia's part...it made me laugh quite a bit.

Thanks for the lovely story.

"Completed" is an ugly word! Please write more soon, I'd love another Dursley-Harry post-war story.

The person I can't forgive is Dumbledore. I'm probably the only Potterite who doesn't think the sun shone out of his . By his own admission, he knew he was condemning Harry to "ten dark, difficult years" when he left him with the Dursleys. OK, it was to keep him alive, but surely there was another way. If nothing else, Dumbledore could have brought Harry to live at Hogwarts, which was the safest place anywhere. Anything would have been better than leaving him with the Dursleys. And why didn't he check on Harry from time to time? An occasional Howler or a brief visit while the boys were out of the house would have scared the Dursleys into treating Harry decently. They would never have loved him, but he might have been spared cruel and abusive treatment. Sorry, rant over. I really did love your story.

Strained. You can feel it in the writing. In fact it gave me a slight headache behind the eyes although I don't think that was your intent. It is difficult to achieve this in writing but I actually felt everything that Petunia was going through......

Nicely done.

Happy New Year.

Of course Petunia wouldn't suddenly make a turn on the spot and become a lovely person - but she managed a few important steps. Which won't help at all if she just falls back into her old habitual ways. Nice to see Dudley happily surprised at her actions - and to see him defend Harry.

So - you got more writing planned? I that case, I've more reading to do...and I really won't mind. Happy, creative New Year to you - may 2009 be abundant in all good ways.

Cheers!

I so agree with you about Petunia - you got her right, nor I can believe she would do anything just for Harry.
I enjoyed her wanting to have a grandchild named after her - just because Lily will have one. Oh, we know how much she always was driven by jealousy in her deeds and thinking!
A very nice story! Actually, would you mind if I translated it into my language and posted it at our HP page next Christmas? As yours, of course. :-)

Hello,
I've been a silent admirer of your work for some time now. Just thought I'd finally express my opinion. You're a terrific writer. Everything I've read of yours is wonderful. This story had a perfect blend of sadness and humor. I also love the way you portray the Dursleys!
Keep writing, I'll keep reading!

A very satisfying ending. I think you're right that Petunia isn't exactly redeemable, but she might well change things for the better if she really thought it would matter for Dudley's future.

I love it that Petunia was peeved with Vernon for sleeping through the visitations, heh. And jealous of Lily for having a granddaughter named after her!

Thanks for such a timely holiday story -- and Happy New Year.
