An Unpredictable Day
"He's kind of cute." It was whispered behind me.
"Which one?"
"That one."
There was a pause. I had a feeling 'he' was getting the 'once over'.
"You're right. He is cute. In a cuddly type of way."
"Yeah! I wonder if he likes blondes."
"Hey! I saw him first!"
I
couldn't help it; I was grinning. I looked down and let my eyes slide
over to look at the girls who were whispering behind us. Both were
tall, one blonde and the other a redhead. The red was a little too
bright to be real.
"What about that girl? She isn't very pretty, but do you think they're together?"
"So? Ohh, you mean like boyfriend/girlfriend?"
"Ah, yeah." It was said impatiently.
"Hmm, I don't know."
I had looked back in front of me when they started talking again. I bit my lips. Oh, this was just too
good to pass up. I couldn't resist. As the line moved forward, closer
to the counter, I stepped up and at the same time, moved closer to
Remus, sliding my arm around his waist. He turned his head to me,
eyebrows raised and a small, questioning smile playing about his lips.
I raised myself on tiptoe to whisper in his ear. Perfect.
I grinned. "Were you listening to the girls behind us?"
"No," he whispered back.
"Well, they think you're quite cuddly."
He let out a burst surprised of laughter.
"They are also wondering if we're together. I love making people believe what they think they see…"
"Ahh."
There was an amused glint in his eye. "I see. You know, if you don't
get us into trouble sometime, I am going to be very surprised."
I was about to yelp 'Hey!!' when he added, "And disappointed."
He was grinning that grin. I grinned back at him. There was a pause while we looked at each other. Then he said, "So you want them to think that we're a couple?"
"Yes." I answered. "They don't look to be your types and I don't want my lunch ruined by them coming over and being oh so sweet."
He chuckled. "Now that wouldn't do, would it? Alright then."
His smile became very wolfish. Cuddly indeed! I was a little surprised when his arm slid around my waist and pulled me closer to him.
"How's that, convincing, do you think?" His lips were close to my ear.
I
reminded myself to breathe then whispered back, "Yes, I do think,
actually." At the moment, though, it seemed a little harder then usual.
I just couldn't imagine why. . .
He laughed and pulled me closer. I liked being this close to him. Comfortable. I laughed to myself. Cuddly.
"Tell you what," he whispered to me. "Tell me what you want and I'll order for both of us. Nice and couplely."
I grinned. "Good idea. Hmm, let's see. . ." I looked at the board without turning my head. "I think I'll have a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger, Mountain Dew, and a small Frosty."
He shook his head slightly, smiling. "How you keep that figure is beyond me."
"It's a secret known only to a few. Anyway, you know what I say about eating out, Mr.
Salad and Water," I replied.
"Mm. You know, I think I'm getting too predictable in my old age," he said.
"Oh, yes, you're ancient," I said dryly.
We were up to the counter. Remus said, "Two Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers, two Mountain Dews, and two small Frosties please."
I looked at him. "Having an unpredictable day, Mr. Lupin?"
"Yes, I thought it was time."
Our
arms were still around each other, his hand resting on my hip. Then,
unfortunately, our orders came and we each had to take a tray. As we
walked past the girls, the redhead shot me a dirty look. I sent her a
very sweet smile.
We sat down and then Remus, very seriously said, "We need to discuss something very important."
I put down my drink, head to one side. "Which is?"
Ahh, there was the glint. "Whether to see 'Notorious' or 'The Birds' of course," he said.
"Oh, yes, that is very important," I said, nodding gravely.
"Very. But this time, you can choose as I chose the last time."
"Thank you, kind Sir."
He 'clinked' his paper cup to mine. He really was a sweetheart.
"So, what will it be?" he asked. "Psychotic birds or angsty spies?"
I laughed. "When you put it like that . . . angsty spies. Fitting, don't you think? Except for the angst, of course."
"Of course. I'm quite happily in love with you."
I
had been about to take the last bite of my burger. Needless to say, I
completely forgot. I stared at him instead. I blinked. He smiled as he
licked his lower lip. His eyes were twinkling. I blinked again.
"Exactly," I managed to say. "We're happily in love with each other."
"Exactly."
He nodded. "Completely angst free," he said in that light, calm voice
of his. He held out his hand to me. "If the lady is finished, shall we?"
I took his hand and stood up. I had recovered.
"Unpredictable day, Mr Lupin?" I asked, smirking slightly as we walked out, hand in hand.
"Very. I quite like it," said he.
"So do I."
A few minutes later, once we were sitting down in the dim theater, I turned and kissed him. Mmm. Cuddly.
