He took a sip of coffee and then rose from his seat and began to pace. While his back was turned, I nervously removed my wand from my sleeve and placed it near my right leg. I hoped I wouldn't need it, but like the Boy Scout I used to be, I believe in being prepared. He walked over near a door muttering something I couldn't understand. At one point, I heard the door open. Since I couldn't see inside the door, I remained where I was. Starting to take a sip of extremely hot coffee, I glanced up and saw the twin barrels of a immaculately cared for shotgun pointing at my head. He used a menacing gravely voice and said, "Give me one reason I shouldn't pull the triggers and blow your philandering head off? (Needless to say, this almost scared the shit out of me--literally.) I dropped the cup and said, "Petrificus Totalus" at Mr. Johnson. "Now that wasn't very nice, though I thought it might happen, sir. It took a lot of courage for me to come here today. I came to ask for your daughter's hand. I hand plans to ask for it in the future, but fate pushed it up today," said George. I silently sent thanks to my Pappaw. Having a grandfather as a retired Obliviator is going to be handy today, especially after the charm he taught me to insert specific memories. I raised my wand and said, "Obliviate, Insero-Novellus-Memorilia." "You do NOT want to blow my head off. You have the shotgun in your hands because I said I love to hunt quail, and you were showing me your shotgun. You did not see me with a stick in my hand. You have every right to be angry with me. Remember though, we do have one thing in common, we both love Denise. When I release the bind, you will put the shotgun away, and get a broom and dustpan and a towel so we can clean up the mess. I would also like a new cup. We will then talk for a half hour or so. If you like what I say, you will go get Denise. I then will ask her to be my bride. If she says yes, you will give her your blessing. On the bind--Finite Incantum." "Lord God, son, I didn't mean to swing it that far over." said Mr. Johnson. As he put the weapon away, I put my wand back into my sleeve. He brought the items to clean up the mess and a new cup. We cleaned the mess together. After he handed me another cup, I sat down. I was hoping we could become friends if for nothing else to tell me what brand this wonderful coffee was and how it was prepared. Taking a deep breath, I said, "Mr. Johnson, let me tell you a story. Perhaps it will answer some of the questions you have for me." ***George's Story*** I took a sip of the fragrant coffee and a calming breath and began the tale. "I first saw Denise in the middle of September. It was a extremely quick glance out of the corner of my eye. I saw her red locks cascading down the middle of her back and she was wearing a beautiful white sundress. I had never seen a woman with such beautiful hair, so I thought I'd investigate further. I had to run with out letting it seem obvious, to get in front of her. The first glance at her face as she smiled and chatted with her friends was dazzling. When I saw the light in her eyes, it took my breath away. "It took me almost three weeks to gather the courage to walk up and say hello. We went to the Student Union for a soda pop and talked for what I thought was an hour. All of a sudden, Mrs. Smith was asking us to leave because it was closing time of ten p.m. "With the rush of our studies and other activities, we didn't see each other for about six weeks." (Ok, I'm not about to tell my prospective Father-in-Law that I was kicked out of a ladies dormitory, one that wasn't his daughter's. Till Denise and I got together, I was a bit of a rogue.) "Halloween came and went. Preparations for the Thanksgiving Day Dance were underway. That's when I saw Denise again. I followed her back to her dorms to get the address. I went to the local florists and sent her a bouquet of flowers and an invitation to the dance. We met in the Student Union the next day for lunch. She said yes and hugged me tightly. After that innocent hug, I wasn't the same again. My heart beat faster when she came into view. She warmed the day better than brightest sunlight. "When we danced the night of the dance, having her in my arms, and me in hers just felt right. I was hoping she had a good time that night, I know I did. I took her back to her dorms that night and we kissed goodnight. From that simple spark of emotion, it set my soul ablaze. "When I said my prayers that night, I almost said to the Lord, 'Since I'm in the neighborhood, let me tell you about my day.' I felt like I was flying. "Over the next few weeks, I came to the conclusion I was a lucky man. I'd found the other half of my soul. One I wanted to keep close to me forever. We took liberties with each other that society reserves for married people. To my heart, we were already married. "I told you this story to hopefully prove to you that I love your daughter. I would do anything to promote her happiness and welfare. "Let us look at the situation from society's views. On the surface, I'm not the best son-in-law material. Let me tell you why. One: I was released from U.N.C. because of poor grades. The first semester, I earned through inattention a D- average; I was put on academic probation at Christmas. On the positive side, with Denise's support and help, I did pull up my average to a C+. I needed a B average to stay in school. The same day, I received a letter from the local Draft Board. "Let me start at the plus side of the situation. I discussed the matter with my folks. My Great-Grandfather took me to his safety deposit box. Reaching into my watch pocket, I handed him the ring. It was my Great-Grandmother's. It would please us both if Denise would wear it. "I had an interesting talk with my Parents and my immediate Grandparents. It seems that our ancestors have made some wonderful investments. It was the seed of our family's wealth. I was told about my inheritance. Receiving it depends on me graduating college or getting a trade. While I may not get a kn-penny in the future if I don't do something to earn it. My bride and our children will be well taken care of, to the point of going to any college or university in the world. I don't expect you to believe me about my trust sir; my folks can go over it with you when we all meet. Picking up the cup, I was surprised that my hand didn't tremble. I took a deep draught of the coffee that had gone lukewarm. I looked directly into his eyes and steeled myself for his reaction. "What do you say sir?" I said. "You have given me a lot to think about young man. It might not be best if I give you my decision till I meet with your folks. I harbor you no ill-will, but I am still upset with you and I need to think," said Mr. Johnson. (Yes, my Pappaw is the BEST!) "May I see Denise tonight, sir?" I said He steepled his fingers and was deep in thought for about 5 minutes. "Against my better judgment, young man, I will go get her. Please do just one thing for me; don't ask her till I have given you my decision," said Mr. Johnson. I sat there stunned for a moment. A little while later, I began to breathe easily again. I looked squarely into his eyes and said, "Sir, I can't promise you I won't. It would be the hardest thing in the world to do, especially tonight. But I will tell you, any final plans will not be made till you have a chance to talk with my folks." (I didn't want to tell him what was in my heart. If she said yes, and he said no: I would fight him for her. He would lose... Its good to be a Wizard.)
